  • “There was very little help given around car parking.”

On arrival into Whitby for the first time, with no knowledge of the area, i asked the staff for help parking as Whitby was full of cars and nowhere to park. A map was provided of all the W parking zones but the quality was very poor and street names were not visible or clear on the map. For someone with no knowledge of the area and one way systems, navigating was difficult so i asked for some street names that i could park in, only to be told that they did not know them. ...

A map was provided of all the W parking zones but the quality was very poor and street names were not visible or clear on the map. For someone with no knowledge of the area and one way systems, navigating was difficult so i asked for some street names that i could park in, only to be told that they did not know them. we were told Whitby was busy at weekends but would be easy to park during the week, this was untrue and despite being out of main holiday times, if you were not parked by 5.00 daily, you were faced with a nightly 20 min drive to look for a space, often some distance away from the property. Its a shame there was no honesty around the difficult parking in the area, it would have made selecting a property for 7 people with 3 cars different and perhaps would not have chosen central Whitby.

The property

Stunning grade II listed Georgian house, perfectly located in a quiet residential area, a short stroll from Whitby’s harbour, stylish bars and award-winning restaurants. Set over four floors, this sumptuous property has been decorated and furnished to a very high standard – with all the mod cons you might expect of a five-star property.

Period features - sash windows, high ceilings and an open fire - add elegance and grandeur. It’s four delightful bedrooms make this a perfect holiday choice for extended families or groups of friends looking for a special place to stay.

Teenagers – or young at heart!

- will appreciate the games room and snug.

There are in fact two sitting rooms, a large kitchen with adjoining dining room area and garden with furniture, so plenty of space to be together whilst doing one’s own thing. This really is the refined coastal property you’ve been searching for! Enter your accommodation via a small courtyard – ideal for storing bikes or beach equipment – and feel instantly at home.

Notice the tranquil décor throughout, lovely Farrow and Ball neutrals, as you pass from the entrance hall into a TV room/snug with comfortable seating and a large Smart TV. The main elegant sitting room boasts an open fire, chandelier and sash windows – the epitome of luxury holiday living.

Light the fire and candles, snuggle up on the comfortable settees, borrow a book from the small library and make time for the things you love. The corridor leads to one of the front doors – there’s two – which has an external stone, spiral staircase descending down to the front garden below.

A real sun trap!

Linger here under the copper beech tree and enjoy a chilled glass of bubbly.

A table, chairs and bench provide a welcome rest. Continue to the lower ground floor, you’ll discover a well-equipped open plan kitchen leading onto a dining room.

What a great space – it’s easy to imagine how good food, drink and conversation will flow into the night around the large, wood table surrounded by comfortable leather chairs.

Plus there’s a wall-mounted television for a relaxed start to the day.

For fun, challenge each other to an all-age tournament of table football in the compact games room.

There’s also a useful cloakroom on this floor. Time for bed…the first floor boasts two luxurious bedrooms.

The first, a king-size double, has an en-suite shower room with a shower, basin and WC.

The soft furnishings create a lovely opulent ambience; the room also has a TV and plenty of storage with built-in closets. The second double bedroom is chic and airy, with an elegant French-style king-size bed, TV, chest of drawers and useful closets. A superb house bathroom, tiled in natural stone, boasts a large, free-standing oval bath, double size walk in shower, basin and WC. A second, large bathroom, also with free-standing bath, basin and WC can be found on the second floor.

Two more lovely bedrooms await, tucked in the eaves: a cosy double and a cute twin with full size 3’ beds and seaside-inspired accessories.

Additional storage on the landing is a bonus. When it comes to gastronomy, Whitby is well-known for its fine seafood and restaurant scene, whether you want a special celebration or just a night off from cooking.

The harbour is the beating heart of the town, where fishing and pleasure boats leave daily – a fun way to see Whitby a different way.

Be sure to call by the RNLI museum, once a lifeboat station, on your way to the sandy beach.

For more history, take a stroll into the ‘old town’ and wind your way through its twisted cobbled streets, past fishermen’s cottages and towards the famous ‘199 steps’ leading to St Mary’s church and the abbey – a worthwhile climb for the fabulous views over Whitby’s picturesque pan-tiled rooftops and out to sea. Travel inland and you will find miles of glorious countryside and the North York Moors – stunning at any time of year, especially when heather the blooms.

There is also some great coastal walking around the nearby fishing villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay. The Old Theatre will most definitely add a touch of luxury to your coastal getaway – a slice of Yorkshire heaven for you and your guests.
