  • "Avoid. Damp, mouldy, not clean, heating and hot water not working."

Building is for sale so guessing that the owner has given up on the idea of holiday lets.

  • "Spotlessly clean."

Plenty of crockery and cutlery but not much in the way of cooking implements which isn’t a big deal when you’re on holiday. Perfectly adequate for a stay, very central. Hints and tips: no parking at property so nowhere to unload. Nearest parking is the railway station, a few miles walk away. Free parking on Chubb Hill Road or Kirkham Road, not too far away. WiFi password is on a sticker in the living room window. Toilet roll needed as only one provided. Also might need washing up liquid. None of this is a criticism of the property. I would stay here again.

  • "The location is excellent."

The flat was nice. Wouldn’t have wanted to do much more than 3 days as the place the kitchen was tiny and with very little facilities like pans. The fridge was tiny and any longer there would have meant cooking more meals, no chance! But the place served it’s purpose. Would have liked some general info leaving like what they expected of us when we left, Wi-Fi etc. there were no cleaning cloths to do a good clean. It really didn’t feel like a Sykes cottage but more like staying at my mates flat. Room for improvement.

  • "Nice bright apartment."

Plenty of space in the living area and bedroom. My daughter slept on the double sofa bed and found it comfortable. Little things that stopped me giving it more stars: some kitchen equipment was unwashed on arrival and no washing up liquid, no instructions for central heating but we figured it out, had to hunt for extra bed covers for the sofa bed and no spare sheet. But overall a decent apartment and a pleasant stay.

Unfortunately there was a smell of wet dog but I would not return due to allergies, I started having a reaction shortly after arriving. We then found cat hair on the cushions and rug in the living room.

We had a few issues with our stay but overall enjoyed our much needed break.

  • "We had a good week in Whitby."

The flat was right in the centre of the town. The listing really should let people know though that the closest parking is a car park 5 mins walk away (important if arriving late in the evening with small children) - there is no where to park to unload the car. The flat wasn’t as clean as it could be. There were only 2 towels (and one was dirty) left for us when we had booked for 4 people - not sure if that information is forwarded from Sykes? The flat shouldn’t be listed for 4 really - way too small for 4 people. The sofa bed doesn’t sleep 2 (and in my opinion wasn’t comfortable at all - came home with a bad back and didn’t get a good nights sleep all week). We’ve stayed in other Sykes properties, paid less and got a lot more for our money (like a nice small welcome pack, information about the property and town - there was nothing like this). Also the TV only worked if you watched BBC 1 and 2.

  • "The apartment was decorated nice and equipped with everything you need however the doors where small and that caused problems with my husbands height and banging his head."

I did have to clean as it was dirty in places I don’t think it had been done prior. The bed needs replacing as it was soft and uncomfortable. It was very expensive for what it was. It was in a great location and well presented.

Thank you for your feedback. Your comments regarding the cleaning are unfounded, the property was cleaned prior to your arrival as it is before every guest arrival, the owner has photos from the housekeeper showing this had been done. Comfort of beds and mattresses is subjective, we are sorry the bed was not to your taste. Property Owner

  • "1. There was no toilet roll on arrival."

This is an essential after a long journey so we have to rush out to buy some! 2. The sofa bed was VERY uncomfortable (and would not sleep 2 people which luckily was not needed for us). 3. We have a total power cut for at least 9.5hrs (maybe longer) between 5pm to 2.30am so: we lost perishable food from the fridge (which we had to discard), and we could not shower/change after a long day hiking. We spent at least 1 hour on the telephone to the property owner why told us to complain to the energy supplier for lost time/lost food/inconvenience.

The kitchen had a frying pan that had been used and just put away without being washed, saying that the kitchen is really lovely. Also I think the listing should state that the height of the door frames are quite low. My boyfriend is 6ft 3 and hit his head a number of times - we wouldn't have booked here if the listing had mentioned it as were avoiding cottages for that reason.

Spotlessly clean. Very close to Whitby centre and all pubs/shops. The apartment would benefit from some extra pans and utensils in the kitchen. I stayed over Xmas and realised I had to cook Xmas dinner with only a small milk pan, and very few utensils like a potato masher or larger knives.
