"Just return from an excellent week at this cottage and we encountered a power failure, a snow storm and the start of storm Bert that has made this a truly memorable break."
The cottage is excellent, small warm with every thing that you could possible need, very informative e-mail from owner giving details of every thing you need to know. Great views and walking direct from the cottage, this is truly a place to remove yourself from all interactions of society if you so wish. Walks on the moors and a visit to the Birch hall Inn at Beck Hole a must, Gothland and Grosmont easy walking distance for the active, walk up onto the moors just across from the cottage for even better views. Great place to stay, and is on my list to stay again.
Dear Gary, I'm so glad you had a great and memorable time. Thank you so much for the excellent review; it really means a lot to us - I love it when people really connect with Brow Cottage as it's a very unique place and special location, even more so in a snow storm! We look forward to welcoming you back again. All the very best for Christmas and the new year. Derek Property Owner

"No welcome pack on arrival."
Just 3 teabags and some out of date milk.
I’m surprised as there should have been a welcome pack for you - sometimes things are overlooked, so if there wasn’t one, a simple call or email (as I mentioned in my welcome message) could have remedied that, but thank you so much for the eloquent review. We work hard to try to provide the best experience possible but we will be sure to try harder. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Property Owner

"Another wonderful holiday in this beautiful cottage."
Surroundings are stunning with plenty of walking and places of interest to visit. Garden is perfect for the dogs. We will definitely be back.
-
"Really lovely, well presented cottage."
Had everything we needed. Great to have such a lovely enclosed garden.
-
"Beautiful cottage, as a family of 4 plus a cockapoo, we would highly recommend it."
Only a short drive to Whitby where there is a lovely beach and places to eat. We also took a drive to Howard House, which had lots to do for the children, and there was also a canine circus that our dog took part in! The cottage is so clean and comfortable. The garden is perfect for children and pets to run around in and see the stars at night. in an idyllic place for walks with family and pets. We would definitely stay here again in the future. Very easy to book and we were given all of the information we needed for our stay. The owner had also left leaflets with ideas of places to visit which was a lovely touch. Thank you so much to the owner for giving us the opportunity to stay in this beautiful part of the world in this lovely cottage.

"Derek is the nicest holiday home lender we have ever come across."
We came here for our honeymoon as we wanted peace and quiet after a very long and exhausting few weeks! We also wanted the dogs to be involved (of course). The garden was our favourite thing, enclosed so the dogs cannot escape and so much room to run around in. We also saw barn owls every night and even in the day, and also a few birds of prey. Will return! P.s. Comfiest bed ever.
-
"Beautiful comfy, cosy , old cottage in an great remote location."
Perfect for walkers, birdwatchers or just chilling. Very well equipped kitchen with everything you need . Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will return .

"2nd time at Brow and didn't disappoint."
Spacious cottage bed really comfy cottage 200 years old loads of character huge garden for dogs. Sandra next door is a star she takes bin out she's there but not there if that makes sense. Weather fantastic gin clear skies. Pub in beck hole short walk away birch Hall Inn worth a visit. Gothland about mile and half away. Would recommend the pub opposite Gothland Hotel really good food and staff so friendly the inn on the Moor. Did try Gothland hotel but seem to be living off heartbeat didn't seem to be as friendly. All in all gr8 stay will deffo be back. Dean and Michele

"Brow Cottage is full of character and is in a perfect location for peace and quiet and picturesque views."
There is everything you need for a comfortable stay. The cottage is clean and spacious and has a large secure back garden. The log fire is nice and cosy when lit at night. If you like sheep, you won't be disappointed. The Barn Owl flies close by during the day and bats can be seen at night. Goathland Train Station is a short drive away where you can board a steam train to Whitby or Pickering and spend a lovely day out and then return to Brow Cottage for a silent night.
Thanks so much, Linzi. You guys are so nice. Brow Cottage will always be there whenever you need it. Take care. Property Owner

"The cottage is in a very peaceful spot, the odd car goes past but close to the main road."
Ypu can hear the steam trains which is lovely. It is an old cottage so not modern, could do with a lick of paint, some comfy outdoor seats would be great so people can enjoy the garden and the quiet, and there are spiders for them that don't like them. (It is the country side) The bedding is spotless and the bed really comfortable. Hot water for a bath if needed. Everything ypu need in the kitchen. Spotted the Barn owls, woodpecker, hares and baby pheasants.

"Wonderful character cottage in a stunning isolated setting and a great location for exploring the North York Moors."
Although the cottage is old it is very comfortable with good facilities and a large garden for the dog to securely explore.
-
"The cottage is delightful."
It's old so bear that in mind. The stairs are steep and narrow but an overweight, arthritic 67 year old managed them easily with care! There are no frills but everything is top quality. The double bed was the best I have ever slept in...and I'm a fussy sleeper. The garden is vast and secure and ideal for inquisitive dogs. The heating is easy to manage; I didn't use the two woodburners at all during my stay but they would have made it very cosy. The cottage is quite remote and very peaceful. My only "better if" would be there was no washing up liquid and only rather dodgy looking hand-wash. Don't expect a welcome pack, but there were sachets of tea coffee and milk available in an emergency. You will need to bring your supplies with you...the village shop in Goathland has the bare essentials only. The directions and information from the owner were excellent. If my knees will stand it, I'd certainly book again! The area is beautiful, even in the wet and wind....of which there was a great deal.

"Lovely cottage in a lovely part of the world."

"Loved our stay at 1Brow Cottage, we’ll definitely be going back."
Such a lovely part of the country, and an ideal location for getting to various places. Brilliant for a quiet getaway
-
"A lovely old cottage."
We really enjoyed our stay. Big garden for the dogs to run around in and plenty to see and do in the local area. The owner sent a nice email a couple of days before we arrived which proved helpful. Would definitely recommend this location.
-
"The photos of this cottage do not do it justice, we were blown away by the location and size of the property."
There is a barn owl who visits at dusk and if you stand in the back garden at night, then you will see the bats come out to play. Along with the sheep, pheasants and hares, there is always life to see. I agree with a previous review, whereby a fridge freezer would be handy, but would also remind people to empty the little freezer box of their bags of ice to allow the next guests room for food! The only other niggle, is that the kitchen cupboard door under the sink is hanging off and the shower has a tendency to leak so a puddle appears near the toilet. On the plus side, best night sleep ever! So peaceful, and beautiful walks on your door step. All the locals are so friendly and I really can't wait to visit again.
-
"Just had week at brow cottage amazing."
Beautiful cottage scenery mind blowing and so quiet. It is remote but that's what we wanted. Pub at bottom of the hill worth the walk good pint of black sheep. Whitby 15 min drive trenchers fish and chips a must Gothland worth a look Gothland hotel ( Aiedensfield Arms ) for a pint. Would recommend the hotel opposite for food Inn on the Moor great value. We did get lucky with the weather. Cottage had everything we needed. Two really niggly things because of the great weather spent alot of time in the in garden which by the way is huge table and chairs have seen better days and just a fridge with ice box struggled to get a bag of ice in it. Ideal for pets completely enclosed. Sandra next door is a diamond insisted in taking the bins out there if you need her not there when you don't if that makes sense. Highly recommended we will be returning

"Great views of the surrounding area."
Cottage has plenty of character. Comfortable and warm. Lovely Yorkshire people . Nice places to eat in Goathland. Visiting the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is an absolute must. Is

"We had a great week at Brow cottage."
Everything you need and more. In a beutiful setting and more to offer walking or driving from the front door. The walks from the cottage are great. Scenic pieceful and full of wildlife. NYMR is a must. And goathland for any fan of heartbeat the programme is great. Yorkshire is a lovely part of the uk and somewhere we have and will be visiting in the future.
-
"Lovely cottage in a beautiful location."
Enjoyed several walks from the door and trips to Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay. Owner very helpful with problems with the television and washing machine. Will definitely visit again.
-
"Nice place in a great location"
We hope you had a lovely time. I personally dropped off a brand new travel cot (still in the box) so assume it worked for you as I didn't hear back. As I was there in person, I made sure the property was spotlessly clean and in great shape so we look forward to welcoming you back soon; by then hopefully we can meet your high standards and improve our score. I hope you enjoyed the nice wine, cake, tea and biscuits I left too. Property Owner

"Lovely comfortable cottage."
With great walks right from the door.
-
"A lovely property that we've visited a few times now and have loved each time."
The owner is super helpful and interested, and the cottage has all you need for a great stay and is incredibly dog friendly. The downstairs bathroom is just what you need, and the location is great. We bought our own firewood etc - and lit the fire in the living room, which was very cosy and super snug. Fab cottage.

"We had a wonderful holiday at 1 Brow Cottages."
The cottage is lovely and full of character, but also comfortable, with both central heating and two traditional wood burning fires. Newly decorated throughout, we thought it was a lovely place to come home to each evening. It had all the amenities needed, the beds were comfy, and it was clean throughout. For those who need it, the wifi worked perfectly - our 10 year old played on his console while we there and had no complaints. The cottage felt like it was in the middle of nowhere (which we loved), but it also wasn't too far from main roads; we found it easily, and it was close to many local villages and beaches. During our 3-day stay we explored Whitby, Runswick Bay, Staithes, Goathland, and Sandsend Beach. At the time of our stay dogs were allowed off lead on all beaches, so our pooch had a great time (they're not allowed on some beaches between May and September). For anyone with dogs, there is a large, fully enclosed garden at the back in which you can let your dog out to play. This was perfect for our greyhound and meant we could safely let him out in the evening for a run. It's worth noting that out the front there are often sheep roaming about, so this space at the back is ideal. Finally, Derek (the owner)'s welcome email was also very helpful. It had all the information that we needed for a great stay. If we're holidaying in this area again, we'll definitely stay here, and we'd recommend the cottage to family and friends.

"Pictures do not do the property justice."
Lovely little cottage with fantastic location, views, and amenities. Booked very last minute and easily accommodated our stay. Fantastic for walkers, families and dog owners. Highly recommend. Shall be returning for another stay.
-
"Lovely cosy cottage in a beautiful setting, perfect for dog owners with its secure garden."
Well equipped with everything we needed. Walks in all directions from the door and only half a mile from the pub! The wonderful coastline is only 20 minutes away so easy to visit Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick and Staithes. Easy walk along the Rail Trail to Goathland and Grosmont with another path taking you down to the spectacular Mallyan Spout waterfall.
-
"We had a great time perfect area and comfortable for what we needed."
Just one suggestion the shower screen needs to be looked at as most of the water went on floor when you had a shower but otherwise it was great and we would definitely book again. Perfect for walkers and dog walkers too .
-
"Very nice cottage, excellent walking routes."
Plenty of other places to visit only a short drive away. Very enjoyable.
-
"One Brow Cottages is an Amazing Special plae, it's a 200 Year old traditional cottage with some modern tweeks We stayed during a severe storm & snow."
...magical So cosy and warm with two fires & central heating Owner incredible! Accessible , Helpful & Friendly

"Lovely cottage if you like peace and quiet."
Old cottage but got everything you need. Owner Derek does not live local be was extremely contactable and went the extra mile sorting out a problem with freeview mast which burnt down - got a Smart TV sent to us within 3 days. Not many would put themselves out to that extent. Will be happy to return when we can.
-
"The cottage is very special, so peaceful and comfortable and the views and local walks are amazing."
The bedrooms are bigger than they look on the website with excellent storage and there wasn’t a single thing lacking. The Bilston tv mast was not fixed when we visited, but this wasn’t a problem for us as we were aware before we went and had plenty of DVDs and books. WiFi is very reliable. The the local pubs we visited were very friendly, great covid-safe service. The cottage owner, Derek, couldn’t have been more helpful. We had a great stay and would definitely book again.
-
"Brow Cottage and Derek, the owner, are fabulous."
It’s a really old house and in nearly splendid isolation so has a fabulously dog-friendly garden, fantastic accommodation and nothing is too much trouble. Derek was attentive, considerate and available, not that we needed him. It’s a perfect location for staying and chilling or for walks and trips and I just wish no one else knew about it so we could make it exclusively ours! We will be back again.
-
"Quite an old and quirky property but really good standard within those limits- enjoyed very much!"
-
"The cottage is in an amazing position."
Views all around, quiet and peaceful. Enclosed back garden that's terrier proof! It is exactly what it says. Basic, old cottage. Had everything you'd need. Any queries the owner is very helpful- even in New York! Walks straight from the door. Goathland is very close by, we walked there a few times with our 8 year old. We were lucky we had fab weather so spent most of our time outside. We went to Whitby and Sandsend, plus visited NYMR in Grosmont, also in walking distance. You can hear the steam train from the cottage. We'd definitely come back to this property. If you want luxury in a busy town environment and amenities on your doorstep this isn't for you. If you want to relax with peace and countryside, a slower pace, enjoying the wonderful Yorkshire Moor views, walks all around, within 20 minutes of the coast book it!
-
"We loved the atmospheric location, the old fashioned authenticness of the cottage, and the easy access to beautiful local walks and to Eskdale and coast by car."
Heating system and wifi also very good. Communication with owner was helpful despite him not living nearby. Minor grouch was the tv screen was very small and difficult to watch from the other side of the room.
-
"We had an absolutely wonderful time staying at Brow Cottage."
Beautifully situated and very homely and comfortable. We brought our dog and our 10 month little boy, both of whom were very happy and well catered for. And both of whom enjoyed all the sheep! I've already recommended Brow Cottage to friends and family as it was a lovely quiet location but nearby some great places to visit.
-
"Great place to stay"
-
"Lovely original cottage with modern comforts."
Beautiful, peaceful location still in close proximity to amenities. Would recommend.
-
"The cottage is in beautiful location if you like the countryside."
-
"Lovely remote cottage with stunning views and walks on the doorstep."
Only a 15 minute drive to shops/petrol station etc an 20 minutes from beautiful Whitby or Sandsend perfect for the dogs. Lovely big garden to play with dogs and ball, away from the meandering sheep on the Moors. Open fire and log burner add to the feel of a real cosy getaway from it all.
-
"Brow cottage is the perfect get away from it all."
Location brilliant for walking, views, base for exploring further afield. So cosy and comfortable and yet felt bigger than the photos suggest. Even the dogs loved it. We'll be rebooking for next year!!
-
"A cosy, very comfortable cottage in an attractive part of the Moors with walks right on the doorstep."
Very helpful additional information supplied by the owner made the holiday experience more personal and we knew he cared about our stay. We will definitely return.
-
"Fabulous moorland cottage, great remote location for walking and steam trains; well equipped and comfortable, ideal for the moors and coast."
-
"A wonderful place to get away from it all."
Will definitely return
-
"Lovely little cottage."
Scenery amazing. Central to everything but out of the crowds of Whitby.
-
"The cottage was enjoyable ."
But a couple of things could be made much better .The cottage should not be advertised as there being a working tv the week we were there it could only pick up BBC 1 .when you've been out all day and you just want to relax watching tv in the evening it's not possible. Plus the owner is well aware of this . Plus there were many comments in the visitors book .Also the cottage would definitely benefit a freezer. That said we did enjoy our stay
-
"Hard to find the cottage but a truly fantastic place to stay."
Excellent location for exploring the North York Moors, so peaceful, we loved the enclosed garden for the dogs and the cosy interior. A Super Relaxing Holiday!
-
"Location and the cottage itself was just perfect"
-
"We were generally very happy with the holiday and property."
However, we were dissapointed with the mould around the bath and shower tiling, otherwise, very happy!
I send a detailed welcome letter to every guest with everything they need to make their stay the best it can be. Included in this is the request that should anything not be to their liking to contact me (or one of the people that help to maintain the property) and I will do my best to remedy the issue. In this particular case the guests did not get in touch. My cleaner looked at issue mentioned and found nothing (She sent pictures to myself and Sykes). I tried to reach the guest several times to see if there was something I could do but have had no response. Property Owner

"This cottage is a very rare gem; secluded and private and yet close to many amenities, dog-friendly and in the midst of wildlife, clean, comfortable, characterful."
Was absolutely ideal for a week for the 4 of us - 2 adults, 2 14 year old twin boys and a springer spaniel.
-
"A lovely quaint cottage set on the moor."
The garden is large and a lovely place to sit on a warm spring day. If you love bird watching it's idyllic. The grouse are noisy, listening to the skylarks is wonderful and the lapwings and curlews can only add to your wellbeing. My dog loved walking straight out onto the moors and discovering new walks . I loved Brow cottage ,there's something very special about it
-
"Had a great holiday in this quirky cottage."
Beautiful scenery and very peaceful. Lovely enclosed garden for the dogs to play in and for us to sit out in.
-
"We had a very relaxing break in this cottage."
The setting is stunning - beautiful views from the windows, and lovely walks straight outside the door. Wonderfully remote, but lovely Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay only 10 miles away. The cottage is beautifully furnished, with everything we needed. Lovely open fires and great enclosed garden for our dog.
-
"Lovely quirky, comfortable, old Yorkshire cottage."
Great location! Wild and wonderful! TV reception not good, but didn’t go for a tv holiday!
-
"We had a three night stay from 7-10 December and we love this cottage."
It is in a beautiful and remote location with stunning views all around. The cottage itself is lovely and cosy with an excellent heating system and you can also make it even more so by buying some firewood for the open fireplace. It's a nice mix of old and new with a lot of original features and some modernisation with the new looking kitchen etc. It even has good Wi-Fi! We walked all around the Beck Hole and Darnholme area one afternoon and took a million pictures because it's so beautiful around there. It only takes around 10 minutes to drive to Whitby too. The landlord is a great guy and keeps in touch to make sure you have all the travel and other details you need, and to ask if you arrived there and home safely. Can't recommend the place highly enough! We'll be back soon, Dave and Carla.
-
"We were keep informed about what to expect from our stay, prior to going."
There are little things that can make improvements, like sorting out the draughts from the "old" sash windows. That said, I lived in a student flat, where the heating couldn't keep up with loss of heat through the windows. This was nothing like that. The easy to use heating controls and log fires kept up very warm - too warm at times. It was a lovely retreat, quiet, but where we could do nothing, but watch the world go by. We would go again, no doubt.
-
"Wish I had noticed that the only toilet was downstairs."
It can be a bit of a problem if you have to get up in the night. Stairs were very steep but had been warned about that. Apart from those two minor problems the cottage was wonderful. If anyone is obsessed with tv they might find the lack of channels available a bit disconcerting (usually only BBC channels). Fortunately we don't go on holiday to watch tv.
-
"Our holiday was fabulous cottage was wonderful location was perfect"
-
"A perfect location, with the moors on the doorstep and the coast 15 minutes away."
Superb walks to Grosmont and Goatland, steam trains and sheep. A really interesting cottage with friendly and helpful owner and neighbours.
-
"1 Brow Cottages is a quirky stone built cottage in a remote location of the Yorkshire Moors."
It has a contemporary feel which compliments the original old features such as stone floors and beamed ceilings. It is generally very well equipped with most of the things you would need for your holiday. We were fortunate enough to have lovely weather so spent most of our time outside (useful because the TVs signal is very erratic and the channels available very limited). There are some very steep hills in the immediate area which really test your calf muscles but are worth the effort for the beautiful walks right on your doorstep. Whitby and Scarborough both have dog friendly beaches and places such as Robin Hoods bay and Runswick bay are well worth a visit. The owner, Derek, is very approachable and responsive via email and will do his best to resolve any issues should the need arise. The cottage is very dog friendly as our spaniel, Rusty, can attest to! He loved the secure, large lawned garden as did we and most evenings we sat out watching the woodpeckers, swallows, curlews etc. Dog owners should be aware that due to the number of free roaming sheep/livestock in the area there are also a lot of ticks and tshould ensure pets are treated before arrival.
-
"The owner of the cottage was very helpful and supportive when he heard we may get snowed in."
He went above expectations and made arrangements so that we could stay at Brow Cottage unroll it was safe to travel home. Fortunately we did manage to get home on our last day.
-
"Characterful and quirky, this 200 year old cottage delights."
Stunning scenery and walking country from the doorstep.
-
"This is an amazing place in an incredible location."
The cottage is a little difficult to find but that's a good thing! It's off the beaten track and a great place to base yourself for day tripping around the area or walking if that's your thing. If the weather isn't great, the cottage is cosy enough to kick about in with a book and we were disappointed to not need to use the fires on evenings! Our two year old loved the sheep, our dog did too...
-
"This cottage is very remote - just how I like it - and charmingly, sensitively renovated."
The location is stunningly beautiful, in the middle of the moors but within a short drive of a larger town. The accommodation is quirky, comfortable and welcoming. Bedrooms are spacious and airy, and the listed building status explains the unusual layout of the downstairs. Pleasant and large garden at the rear but to be honest with the location of this cottage, it feels like the whole of the North Yorkshire Moors is your garden.
-
"Lovely cottage in the middle of nowhere."
Nice and cosy with lots of quirky features. Highly recommended.
-
"Lovely cosy cottage with beautiful views."
The cottage was within 15 mins from Whitby and other tourist attractions. Great walks on your doorstep.
-
"Such a lovely traditional cottage in a really peaceful spot."
We wouldn't hesitate to return!
