  • "Great location and helpful host."

Some of the best sunset/night sky views we've come across anywhere (happening to coincide with a period of meteor showers).

The house was very well equipped, nicely furnished & views which surpassed our expectations! We were also blessed with the most amazing weather. We would love to return.

  • "Tombae is a very comfortable cottage and extremely well placed for exploring the Spey valley and Rothiemurchus forest."

We particularly appreciated the quiet position and beautiful views. There were a couple of rather worn or missing items in the kitchen and we left a note for the owner about these. We would certainly book the cottage again if we return to this area.

  • "Immaculately clean and very well kitted out inside."

The cottage is just outside Boat of Garten and has fantastic views over open countryside in all directions. It is on the edge of Abernethy Forest and there are great walks and bike rides right from the door. Would thoroughly recommend staying here.

  • "A week here has been completely relaxing, a home from home."

Cosy and comfortable with outstanding views. The cottage is modern without losing its charm. Deer can be seen at various times of the day running from the woods across the road, we got used to waiting for them each day, we also saw a stoat in the garden. A great place from which to explore the Cairngorms, take local walks and even take a trip to Chanonry point to see the dolphins. Brilliant

  • "The accommodation is excellent, having stated before we knew what to expect, and even with the new CoVid restrictions the property was very clean and the linen change arrangements etc."

.. we're very well organised. The property owner, Jennifer, is very friendly and helpful and contactable if any problems. We had a great holiday. However was very disappointed the level of support, or lack of it!, from Sykes prior to the holiday. We weren't sure if we would be able to travel and what the options would be if we couldn't, but we were unable to contact anyone. There was no contact number, no facility to email etc... So we just had to wait and see if we could go. When companies are happy to take your money off you, I think that the least they can do is keep you informed about these issues.

The property has excellent facilities and is very warm and cosy even in the worst winter weather. There is great walking opportunities close by as well a directly from the property to Loch Garten. A truly excellent property to have a relaxing holiday.

Found lots to do and places to visit. The holiday cottage was very comfortable and we were never cold. A radio would be a good addition to the otherwise well equipped place. A list of restaurants in the area would have been helpful.

Clean, comfortable and cosy. I had read a recent negative review and was slightly concerned before we arrived. Although all other reviews were very positive. We found the cottage to be excellent. Everything worked and it was beautifully clean. Not sure why anyone could have given this a poor review?? Peace and quiet. Fabulous location. This cottage had everything needed for a perfect highland holiday. We self cater a lot and this cottage more than compared well with others. It was well equipped and the lay out suited us really well with a large social kitchen diner. We are looking forward to returning next year. Great place to stay!!

  • "This was our second visit to Tombae and indeed we chose to stay in Nethybridge once more because we loved this property so much."

As soon as we walked in, the house felt warm and welcoming. It is tastefully decorated with comfortable furniture and a well-stocked kitchen. There were even tea & coffee containers for our use. The views from all the windows are lovely - looking over fields , the forest, and the mountains in the distance. We had two deer in the field most mornings and saw a hare too. The heating in the house is very efficient - indeed, on some days we had to open the windows to cool down a little. There's a nice seating area in the garden, with a wooden table and chairs, and a barbeque is provided if required. We met the owner of the property when she came to attend to the garden and she was happy to suggest places of interest in the area to visit. We got the impression she wanted us to have a lovely relaxing break which was very easy at Tombae. We hope to be back next year. (For Sykes' information - despite the same surname, we are no relation to the owner of the property!)

  • "We have just returned from a weeks stay at Tombae where we had a lovely holiday."

Unlike a recent reviewer we cannot think of anything negative to say about the cottage. When we first arrived it was very hot in the cottage because the sun had been shining on it the whole day and so the first thing we did was open ALL of the windows without any problem. All of the appliances that we used during our stay were in good working order and the cottage was spotlessly clean and comfortable. We loved the fact that the cottage offered peace and quiet but was situated within a short distance from a variety of little villages. All in all it is a lovely place to stay and we would not hesitate to return for another weeks holiday.

  • "This cottage was more than just disappointing."

When we first arrived we found no more than 5 mugs/cups in the kitchen (the cottage was for 5 people). All 5 of the mugs were dirty - two were furry on the inside with mould. We found plates and bowls in the same state. Later it transpired that the dishwasher had no salt and no rinse aid in it, and none was provided. Whether that was the root cause or not, the dishwasher did not wash anything properly during our entire stay. The microwave did not cook or even heat food either. So two major appliances were broken. The main fridge was also broken, so we had a second fridge in the middle of the kitchen when we arrived. None of the windows opened, being stuck together on old paint - we experienced wonderful warm sunny weather every day of our stay, so this was unacceptable. As the toilet window did not open, we had been left with an aerosol of air freshener instead - the aerosol was just an empty can. There was no ice tray, no tablecloth, and we were supplied with towels for only 3 people, when we had paid for a cottage which slept 5. We will never use your services again. Please DO publish this account - you failed to publish one recently which said more or less the same things as we have said here (broken equipment, dirty cottage). That one was published on tripadvisor by the clients when you refused to publish it. We will do the same unless you publish both theirs and ours. It is not fair to withhold valid complaints.

There was a slight hiccup with the keybox having been damaged but the owner texted us and we were able to go to the cottage even sooner than the 3.00 pm time so we could be let in by the cleaning team. The house was very warm and cosy. The owners had even arranged for good weather for the week, too! We will be booking it again for round about the same time next year.

It didn't affect us because the weather was cold and we didn't have our windows open. Had the windows been open however, or we wanted to sit in the garden, the noise would have been very intrusive. We booked the cottage primarily because of it's remote location and to get away from construction noise which we experience everyday at home.

About the location

BOAT OF GARTEN

Aviemore 7 miles; Grantown-on-Spey 7 miles.

Boat of Garten is a small village situated in the Cairngorms National Park near the River Spey. Due to its rural location, the village is a great base for those seeking to discover the impressive, rugged landscape of the region and the abundance of wildlife that resides here. Due to its close proximity to the large population of Ospreys at RSPB: Loch Garten, the village is also known as Osprey Village. In the village itself, you can find the family run 1896 Gallery, Anderson's Restaurant, a Post Office with a delicatessen, a shop with a cafe and The Boat Hotel where you spend an evening dining out in style. Enjoy fishing on the River Spey, or play a round of golf at the Boat of Garten Golf and Tennis Club, which boasts an 18-hole course designed by professional golfer and golf-course architect, James Braid. The village is a short drive from the town of Aviemore, where you can enjoy outdoor activities all year round; enjoy skiing in the winter months, or walk, climb and cycle through the summer. Also nearby is the Caledonian Pine Forest, with many marked walks and trails to explore. Boat of Garten is a wonderful spot from which to enjoy a holiday exploring this stunning national park.
