  • "A lovely chalet in the hills overlooking Strathpeffer."

Even when -8c outside, it is very toasty inside. I drive an MG4 EV and we had no trouble driving up the roads to the chalet. It is well-equipped and with stunning views over the valley from the balcony.

Good location to explore this part of Scotland. Owners very friendly and are on hand should you need anything. Larchfield Chalets are marked on Google Earth, I used this to pin point them on my sat nav as the post code may get you lost

  • "We have never stayed in such a well presented holiday home."

It was warm (as we were there in Autumn). Incredibly well equipped to be able to prepare meals, towels, hand wash etc. The welcome gifts were really nice. Nice lot of games, books and DVDs for all the family. Alan was so lovely to chat to and although we didn't meet Sandra the care she puts into keeping the cottage in such good condition shows. What 3 words we saw on the website were wrong. They were: strutted.answer.bets The sign for Bottacks had fallen down on the way to the property in the storm so we missed the turning. Alan rescued us and he knew exactly where we had ended up. The views from the property were incredible. It did the world of good for our emotional well-being. We hope to be back soon and stay for longer!! Alan and Sandra have set the bar very high for holiday cottages

The road up is a little bumpy but not a negative - just drive slowly! The view is stunning and I was lucky enough to see the nacreous cloud the morning we were leaving. Sadly we never got to meet Sandra, but Alan was lovely and so helpful. I would love to be able to keep this little gem a secret but would be a great disservice to Alan and Sandra. We plan to go back later in the year, and have already recommended this place to friends and family. I can’t recommend this place enough.

It was picture postcard beautiful as we had snow on new year's eve and the view was beautiful. The chalet is very comfy and cozy with everything you need. There is no wifi which is clearly listed but the mobile signal is very strong so if you have a large data allowance you can wifi hotspot and access all the digital channels. Alan and Sandra were lovely, helpful hosts and I would definitely come back again.. possibly in the spring/summer to take advantage of the walking opportunities.

  • "We loved every minute of our two-week stay here."

The chalet is spotless, well-equipped and comfortable with a lovely view towards The Cat’s Back (ridge) and Knockfarrel. The balcony proved an excellent spot for watching red kites, which we saw frequently, and, on one occasion, a pine marten. Our hosts, Sandra and Alan, were very welcoming and so friendly. We very much enjoyed our chats with Alan. They really couldn’t have been nicer. Something to bear in mind: the chalet is accessed by a steep, winding road. Walk up and down it a few times during your stay- as we did- and your cardio fitness will improve no-end!

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Larchfield Chalet 1."

The chalet was very cosy and comfortable and had everything we needed. The weather was not particularly cold when we stayed but in colder weather I think some extra blankets for the beds might be welcome. We brought our own and did use them on the colder nights. The location was lovely, very peaceful and with a beautiful view from the balcony. We appreciated the DVDs in the chalet. The only downside was that the stones around the chalet were not great for our wee dog who found them uncomfortable for walking on. We found it difficult to find the chalet as it is a bit off the beaten track but it was so helpful to be met on the way by the owner and guided on the last part of the journey. And the view and location made the journey worthwhile. We were thrilled to see Red Kites flying on a couple of mornings and the sounds of the birds and other wildlife were lovely. We felt we were truly in the heart of the countryside.

It is difficult to find and satnav takes you to the wrong destination, however we contacted the owner and he gave us directions over the phone and met with us. The cottage is a bit old fashioned, however I liked that about it, lovely place to relax . Complimentary wine and chocolates on arrival which is a lovely touch. The cottage is quite remote and perfect to relax for a few days. Short drive to Dingwall and Strathpeffer. Beautiful views of the sunset in the morning. Slight problem with the heating which was unavoidable and quickly resolved . I would return, very reasonable priced staycation.

  • "A very well appointed chalet with lovely views, perfect for hill-walking and exploring the area."

A bit tricky to find, but when you do - it is worth it! Here are a few tips: The post code is likely to point you to a different place, so the GPS/Street map grid ref. is NH48480 60231. The sign for Bottacks is not visible coming from the south (fallen off?), but turn left first tarmac road after level crossing, follow road around to the right, then left below a new big property (still heading for Bottacks). When you get to a locked gate straight in front, turn sharply right uphill and it is signposted 'Larchfield'. Thanks for a great stay and a very warm welcome.

  • "We phoned to arrange check in and Alan, the owner couldn’t have been more friendly."

He explained that the chalet was difficult to find, and if we got lost, we were to call him and he would come and get us. We found the chalet from his directions, and he was there to greet us. He showed us the important stuff, and said if we needed anything, just to give him a knock (his property was right beside the chalet). He then left us to it, and we hardly saw him through the week. The chalet was lovely, if a little dated, but was spotlessly clean and very comfortable for the two of us and our pet dog. There was a bottle of wine and a box of After Eights left for us on the table, which was a lovely gesture. I think the chalet may be a bit small if 6 people stay together, but was perfectly good for us. The bed was a little soft but very comfortable, and we slept well, the chalet had everything we needed, and we enjoyed a very relaxing week away. I would recommend this property to anyone, lovely owners and fab little holiday home. I would love a return visit, thank you Alan!

The driveway up to the chalets is quite steep and rough with a gravel car parking area so would be unsuitable for large or touring motorcycles. We were treated to watching a Red Kite soaring and hunting across the valley on numerous occasions making it very special indeed. Highly recommended.

  • "I was met by the owner to collect the keys, shown where the heating controls were and the shower, and then left alone with no further visits, which is as it should be."

A bottle of wine and a box of chocolates are on the table for the visitor, which is a nice touch. For my cooking requirements, everything that I needed was available in the kitchen. The views across the valley towards Strathpeffer and beyond are quite spectacular, with sliding doors accessing a small balcony, and it would be very pleasant to sit out there on a sunny day, which somehow eluded me during my stay! The location is pleasantly quiet, although a neighbour's heating boiler can occasionally intrude, it is of little concern, and out of the control of the owner. Given the location, it is perhaps not surprising that there is no Wi-Fi available, which may put some people off, but with an aversion to social media, it was of little concern to me. There is a very good 4G signal strength, however. For self-catering, there is a large Tesco in nearby Dingwall, and access to cheaper fuel there too.

About the location

STRATHPEFFER

Inverness 20 miles.

Often compared to a Bavarian Mountain resort, the picturesque spa village of Strathpeffer owes its growth to the discovery of water springs during the 1700s, and was declared in 1819 to be the healthiest drinking water in Britain! The original Spa Pavilion has been magnificently restored after a period of disuse and now serves as a venue for a variety of events, including concerts, dances, dramas and exhibitions. The former Victorian railway station, which in times past brought many visitors from near and far, has now been beautifully restored to house craft workers and their shops, and is also home to the Highland Museum of Childhood. Visit the restored Pump house (also a Tourist Information point), take a walk along a forest track, or enjoy the views from the nearby pictish hill fort at Knockfarrel. Whatever you decide there's plenty on offer for all the family.
