The attractive coastal village of Tongue, with its imposing stone buildings, shops and hotels, is set alongside the Kyle of Tongue, and is centrally placed for touring the beautiful Northern Highlands. The area has much to offer the visitor, including golf courses, outstanding fishing, some of the finest hill walking and mountaineering country in the land and the grand castle at Dunrobin, the home of the Earls of Sutherland. The Castle, overlooking the sea, boasts a magnificent formal garden inspired by the grandeur of Versailles in France. Another attraction not to be missed is the Falls of Shin at Lairg, with its restaurants, shopping areas, highland craft shops, forest walks and tumbling river. In the immediate area are several other outdoor adventure activities including falconry, bird watching, photography, woodcarving, geology, kayaking, and even dry stone walling.
