We can happily say we have not stayed in a prettier, cosier or more scenic property. The views are amazing, the facilities are perfect and the family (owners) that live nearby were a delight. The BBQ hut was an exceptional addition that we very much enjoyed (all provided and set up for us by the owner at no additional cost). We would definitely go back to this property, simply said, there were no faults to be found. Well worth the money. Thank you to the family for lending us this property for the week.

Hosts were friendly and very helpful. The added extras of bathing products, gowns , washing machine powder and a lovely loaf of bread were fantastic. Lacked hanging space but didn’t bother us as plenty of room to put clothes in spare room . The Lovely BBQ hut was fantastic we had a lovely evening with Guests from the neighbouring cottage. ( now friends) . The cottage is in a great location for visiting various places in the Highlands. We covered so many different places and a sunny week made it even more perfect. Will definitely return one day. The views from the cottage were incredible.

  • "The only comment really is that we thought we could go for walks direct from the cottage, but the reality is that you need to make a short drive in either direction to a more suitable starting point (or walk down a road with no footpath for 1-2 miles)."

Apart from that everything was spot on and as expected.

  • "We had a lovely stay at Appletree Croft and had everything we needed for our week's holiday."

The cottage was warm and cosy, and we enjoyed using the woodburner on a couple of the chillier evenings. The only slight improvement we would suggest is a larger bed and/or duvet - as a couple of larger people we found ourselves fighting over the covers and hanging onto the edge of the bed every night!

Location is awesome with arguably Scotlands best Glen Glen Affric 40 mins down the road. The property was immaculate on arrival, facilities 10 out of 10, log burner great on cold nights. Views from the conservatory across the Glen were great. There are maybe 2 other self caterings of the many over 40 years I've stopped in I would return to, this is at the top of that short list!

  • "What a most wonderful place to stay for Christmas."

We arrived, travel weary, greeted by Warwick who had lit a warming fire, what a welcome. The property was forensically clean and had all equipment for a weeks stay. Including cooking oil, salt/pepper, dishwasher tablets, tea/coffee and sugar. Plus the Becky home made loaf (delicious and was woofed down in minutes). The views from the property are absolutely stunning and sitting in the dining area was my favourite place. The surrounding area had all we needed. Beauly for groceries, coffee shops etc. Plus numerous outstanding places of interest. We found Dog Falls, Rogie Falls and Plodda Falls within a few miles. All magical in their own right. Additionally we had SNOW! which really set the Christmas atmosphere. Thanks again Warwick and Becky

From day one we were treated to a amazing views from the very comfortable sun room, perfect setting for breakfast to watch the wildlife go about their daily business. Warwick and Becky were always there if you needed them. But we very rarely did, Pip the family dog was a wonderful visitor (usually for food) but we didn't mind that at all. All rooms were comfy and clean inside, but the nest room was outside on the picnic table. Midges weren't a problem but did begin to fly around end of the stay. We.had such a lovely time staying well definitely return, hopefully for Xmas stay. Oh and the lovely loaf of bread was delicious, no eggs this time, but I didn't see any chickens either.

  • "My daughter and I loved the property."

Warwick, Becky and the children were lovely and certainly enhanced the holiday for us. It is fair to say the property is not designed for the taller person, the sloping bedroom roofs were not ideal but it didn't take long to find a working solution. The location, views and accessibility were perfect, as was the surrounding countryside and scenery. We would particularly recommend Glens Strathfarrar, Affric and Tomich for walking and spotting Highland animals (a curse on the horse flies though). Most of all, just relax and enjoy the peace and quiet that comes with it all.

  • "We stayed at Appletree 23rd April 2022 for a week."

The cottage was lovely and clean and warm,a surprise freshly baked loaf of bread on arrival which was lovely and Warwick the owner greeting us in person been very friendly and helpful with lots of usefull knowledge.Throughout the week,at appletree we saw multiple species of birds at the croft and Osprey circling over the river Beauly in the distance.Regular Buzzards flying above.Locally Beauly Village was beautiful with everything you need in food, fuel, takeaways e.t.c.Recommend visiting Beauly Priory steeped in history.Down the road from the croft we saw a Periguine Falcoln near Dog Falls, several deer and stags.Loads of deer at the Beautiful road down to Loch Carron.Isle of Skye a couple of hours away.A plus for us was seeing red sqirrels at Aigas golf club area on the same approach road to the croft and dolphins within 10 feet of the beach at Chanonry point.Anyone visiting Chanonry we recommend going 1to 2 hours after low tide. One of the best places in the world to see dolphins close up from land. The only things we think of that could help Warwick and his family as owners is to add a tumble dryer of a rotary line outside and slab or gravel the car space area as it became very slippy with mud when raining. The croft is perfect for walkers and bird watching with a beautiful sun room on the front looking down the valley to the mountains towards Glen Affric.Dark skies were amazing views on clear nights. One last thing this property is quirky and a restored former croft and would not suit disabled needs as the stairs are very steep to the bedrooms. We wish Warwick,Becky and family well and hope to return soon.Thank you.Mr & Mrs K

I found the property via Sykes Cottages and fell in love with the pictures that featured tasteful decor, a delightful sunroom and stunnning views over meadows, mountains and rivers. I was welcomed by the owners with a pre-arrival very detailed email, a warm home baked loaf of bread & an on site friendly welcome! The cottage was ideal for me as a solo traveller, lookig to do some writing, reading, business planning & get away from city life in England. The croft is well equipped with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a beautiful kitchen with all modern appliances including a dishwasher & washing machine. The lounge & sun room were delightful & the garden looking out towards the River Beauly was simply beautiful. There is a dedicated parking space also, WiFi & Netflix! The charming village of Beauly is only 10 miles away. Inverness is a 20 minute drive, as is Loch Ness. Warwick & Becky have done a fantastic job of providing all you need, decorating the Croft with beautiful artwork & offering all the support you need. I was blown away, left feeling relaxed & will look to return sooner rather than later!

Warwick and Becky were excellent hosts, attention to detail was great. The freshly made bread, and eggs from their hens were greatly appreciated, and the use of the bbq hut was fun. Property was immaculate throughout. Quick communication regarding directions etc. Couldn't fault the hosts. One thing I would mention is as it is a fitted kitchen with undercounter fridge/freezer, it was lacking a bit in space considering we were there for a week. The freezer is a small compartment at top of the fridge so please bear this in mind if doing a large shop for your stay. One small fault, but everything else truly made up for this, at this lovely property.

This cottage has only recently been renovated to a very high standard and our hosts, who live in an adjacent house, could not have been more friendly. We were there in October so tested out the wood burning stove. Brilliant; indeed the property is so well insulated we were toasted. There is a BBQ hut with fire pit which looks fun although we didn't have time to try it. Small proviso - if you are of limited mobility just speak to the proprietors first as there are uneven paths and steep stairs.

The property

Boasting the best views in the glen, Nan's Cottage is a detached property that sits in a stunning elevated location on the sunny side of Strathglass in the Highlands of Scotland.

The stone-built former crofters cottage looks over a broad pool in the River Beauly, swathes of woodland and westward to the high hills of Glen Strathfarrar.

An ancient appletree shades the off-road parking.

The cottage is co-located with East Craigdhu Cow Byre (Property 977016) so allowing small groups of friends to take separate cottages should they wish.

The owners home sits behind the cottage.

It is well-suited to families and friends looking to escape to a tranquil, rural setting to relax.

There are a myriad of outdoor attractions in the area, including some of the country’s best hill walking.

There are also opportunities for canoeing, pony-trekking, loch cruises and dolphin-watching boat trips.

Options for low level walking amid waterfalls and ancient woodland abound.

The increasingly popular NC500 touring route is very close by.

Enter straight into the delightful south facing sun room, with dual aspect windows offering superb views of the river, woodland and hills.

It is a lovely spot to gather for a casual meal, a game of cards, or to discuss plans for your stay and to relish the breath-taking scenery.

Inside the cottage is entirely modernised but retains the charm of a cosy stone built cottage.

The high spec kitchen is ideally equipped for you to rustle up hearty breakfasts, wholesome picnics or a scrumptious evening feast.

You can unwind into your evening in the sitting room with the lights dimmed and a toasty woodburner keeping you cosy and warm during the winter months and the 55 inch TV tuned to Netflix, Amazon Prime and a host of other subscription services.

The ground-floor is complete with a large and wonderfully appointed shower room, while the two south-facing bedrooms and WC are reached up a short steep staircase.

Both bedrooms have dormers windows with beautiful views.

Guests of the cottage now also have a Scandinavian BBQ hut available to them free of charge.

This recent addition is shared with the family and the Cow Byre.

It sits on a deck with superb views over the glen.

It is fully equipped with all the charcoal and BBQing accessories you might need.

All you need to do bring your own sausages.

This peaceful, countryside setting is within reach of the stunning Glen Affric National Nature Reserve, with its gentle lochs, haunting moorland and enchanting woodland where you can enjoy pleasant walks and birdwatching.

The cottage itself will particularly appeal to wildlife lovers.

Otters, many birds of prey, deer and many other species are regularly seen from the window.

Nan's Cottage is just over 6 miles from Beauly, a pretty village equipped with a small supermarket, gift shops, restaurants, butcher, post office and much more.

The increasingly popular NC500 route around the north coast of Scotland runs right through Beauly!

The Highland Capital of Inverness is also just 16 miles away.

A little further afield you’ll find Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, Rosemarkie Beach and Chanonry Point on the Black Isle (one of the best places to see bottlenose dolphins from UK land!), Culloden Battlefield, various distilleries including Glen Ord in the neighbouring town of Muir of Ord, and much much more.

About the location

BEAULY

Inverness 12 miles.

Lying on the north bank of the River Beauly, just 12 miles west of Inverness, the village of Beauly is situated at the very heart of the Highlands. An excellent location for touring, the village is within easy reach of Loch Ness, the ancient Caledonian pine forests of Glen Affric and Strathfarrar and the coast (sandy beaches 8 miles). The name Beauly comes from the French “beau lieu” or “beautiful place” and the village prides itself on being both scenic and well-kept, having won both Scotland and Britain in Bloom titles. One of Beauly's highlights is the ruined 13th Century priory, around which the village was built. Today the village is famous for its craft-based industries and offers an excellent selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. With some of the best scenery the Highlands has to offer just on the doorstep, Beauly makes an excellent holiday base!
