  • “We met Tim for the key in the local Co-op and he directed us to it – had it not been for him I doubt we would have found it.”

We'd tried to find it on Google Maps but it wasn't obvious where it was. It is an interesting small property that is in what looked like a purpose built block up an alleyway off the main street. First impression was that it was very clean and had most of what we would look for in a holiday let; King size bed, WiFi but sadly no dedicated parking but more of that later. There was a welcome pack that included wine, bread & milk and some tea, coffee and sugar. Sadly no butter. There is a dishwasher and washing machine/dryer but no detergents supplied. What was also surprising was that there was no Welcome Property Folder so we had no details of how to use the equipment, what the fire arrangements were, what to do with rubbish or what the WiFi key was. Fortunately the WiFi hub was in the lounge and the key was on the reverse. We later found some instruction books in one of the kitchen cupboards but nothing for the washing machine – had to work that one out for ourselves. The dishwasher proved to be superfluous as there was really only enough crockery & cutlery for 2 so had to be washed as used. Sadly there was no cafetière or tea pot so we were restricted to instant coffee and teabags. Accommodation was well proportioned, lounge/dining, separate kitchen, good sized bedroom, (very comfy bed), and bathroom with separate cupboards in the hall and on the landing area for coats & clothes (could have done with a few more coat hangers but what was supplied were good quality). The over bath shower was very good although there was no bath mat for over bath shower which it really needed as bath didn't appear to be non slip. The lounge only has a 2 seater settee which was unfortunately stained, and there was a smell of 'dog' on the throw on the back of it, (something that is unfortunately inevitable if pets are allowed). Saw Tim again mid-week and asked him a few things and he answered all our questions and basically said if we needed anything, (including additional toilet rolls), we just had to ask. Nice chap and he did do everything we asked for. In summary this was a good property for us despite the little niggles. It is in the centre of town with all amenities on your doorstep. Access off the alley was through a private gateway that was security coded so it felt quite safe. Free parking is available off site a short walk away. It is not secure but we had no problems. And in conclusion if we were to return to Alnwick then we would certainly consider staying here again.

About the location

ALNWICK

Alnmouth 4 miles; Bamburgh 15 miles; Rothbury 10 miles.

The attractive and historic market town of Alnwick is dominated by Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland. The Castle Gardens, opened in 2002, are home to Europe's largest cascading water feature, a fabulous (and enormous) treehouse, a delightful rose garden and a beautiful, walled ornamental garden, which will delight novice and experienced gardeners alike. The castle is also famous as the setting for Hogwarts School featured in the Harry Potter films! The town's narrow streets have seen little change since the days when the London to Edinburgh stage coach passed through and the Market Place, with its stone cross, is still the central feature and the ideal venue for the weekly Saturday market. Alnwick offers a good selection of shops, pubs and places to eat and there is plenty to see and do, with miles of golden sandy beaches, numerous castles and boat trips to the famous Farne Islands all available nearby. Altogether a superb location for exploring Northumberland and its stunning Heritage Coastline.
