The cottage was well equipped and the beds were comfortable. Parking was easy and the cottage was in a great location for touring around Northumberland and for shopping. Lots to see and do. The weather was also not too bad for June with only half a days rain, which gave us chance to have a rest in the cottage. Would certainly recommend Magpie Cottage and consider staying there again when visiting the area.

Thank you very much for visiting Morpeth and Northumberland and for choosing us for your stay. Glad we could also arrange the weather too. Would be great to see you again in the future !! Kind regards Paul & Jane Property Owner

  • "We liked the cottage very much."

It is tastefully furnished and decorated, with a well appointed kitchen etc. We really liked being on private land with a dedicated parking spot, and a lovely communal garden with beautiful fruit tree blossom in May. Other reviews had mentioned traffic noise - but we found the lane to be very quiet. A low beam in the bathroom was also mentioned in other reviews, but we found this not to be a problem - at least not for a 3 night stay (how long do you actually spend in the bathroom each day!). The cottage was nicely central to our trips to Lindisfarne and the North York Moors as well as a family function in Ailslaby. The proprietors were welcoming and friendly. We hope to be back.

Many thanks for your positive and honest review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us, enough to consider a return visit !! Kind regards Paul & Jane Property Owner

  • "Magpie Cottage is on private estate in the countryside where you would expect a peaceful stay but being the end cottage, the bedrooms were directly next to a road where traffic could be heard."

The bathroom washbasin + mirror were very restricted because of the large wooden beam, the double bedroom also had a beam above bed. Beds were uncomfortable however the cottage was heated adequately.

Thank you for leaving feedback on your short stay at Magpie Cottage. Please see our previous comments regarding the ceiling beam in the bathroom and main bedroom. We are sorry that the double and single beds were uncomfortable, it is so difficult to provide a mattress that suits all guest requirements. The road traffic can be a little busy during working/travel times, however it does stop and ease considerably during late evening/sleeping/bedroom times. We are pleased that the fairly new heating system kept you warm. Kind regards Paul & Jane Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage in a very peaceful setting."

Our dog loved the beach which was only 20 minutes away by car. The only negative for me was the beam across the bathroom ceiling. Despite the warning label I still managed to bang my head a few times.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback your positive and pleasing experience of Magpie Cottage. The ceiling beam in the bathroom that also runs into the double bedroom, can be a disadvantage for our 'taller' guests. Unfortunately the 40+ year old property and beam cannot be redesigned as it is part of the main roof structure of the cottage. We have endeavoured to do our very best to make taller guests aware of the proximity of the beam with signage and information. Kind regards Paul & Jane Property Owner

  • "Overall the cottage was clean, warm."

The worst part and was not shown in the advertisement is a ridiculous located beam through the large bedroom and in particularly the bathroom. It would be fine if you were 5ft tall. Being 5ft 10in I came away with numerous cuts on my (bald) head. Just putting a sign on the beam is not good enough. In the least the corners should be rounded off and not sharp and further padding. It’s no fun having to bend to use the toilet nor the sink. Frankly I would not go there again.

Thank you for your feedback !! Kind regards Paul & Jane Property Owner

Upstairs the floor creeks a lot which makes getting up at night difficult without disturbing others. The beams in the bathroom are rather low and great care was needed not to stand up in the wrong places. Otherwise the place met our need beautifully and the host was very welcoming and helpful. Thank you

  • "We stayed for 3 nights in Magpie Cottage and it was brilliant."

Cozy, comfy space, nicely decorated and well equipt. The washer & dryer is just a couple of doors along too if needed. Parking onsite is convenient and it was a lovely touch to have a local parking pass available to use as parking is free in the area if you display the pass. Paul and Jane were lovely hosts, super helpful and always available. It was a brilliant base to explore Northumberland with our pooch, we particularly loved the beaches at Blyth, Whitley Bay & Bamber. Duridge beach was also lovely when you get to it but the parking is on the verges on a small road. It was a small hassle though for the epically long beach and beautiful views. Duridge country park is also worth a visit. Morpeth was really nice too, lots of coffee shops, beautiful Carlisle Park and of course the fabulous Cheese Shop! All round great relaxing trip! The only reason we gave 2 slightly lower comments around facilities and accuracy of listing was just because the shop/pub was listed as 2.8 miles away and we thought we could walk to it and it may be helpful to note that this would be by car rather than walking (unless we missed a trick!) we would have loved to have taken the dog on a walk to the pub to stop for lunch and then walk back again but we could not find any paths to do that. This in no way hindered our experience or took away from the lovely cottage and it’s beautiful surroundings.

Thank you for your kind comments and feedback. In response to your comment regarding walking to the nearest pub, which is 'The Plough Inn' located in Mitford village. The better option for travel to the pub is by car and roughly 2.8 miles. However there is a short cut which does entail a short 300m walk from our location to the start of a public footpath, which takes a more direct route to the pub and Mitford village. However this can be quite a challenging path, crossing fields etc, with a couple of small gradients close to the river. Depending on weather conditions walking boots, shoes would be required !! Paul and Jane were excellent hosts. Location was fantastic for Northumberland coastline and sites. The cottage was in a beautiful setting and tastefully decorated in a fresh and contemporary style. Broadband was a little hit and miss which as you can imagine didn’t go down well with my teenage daughter! We had a lovely relaxing break in a part of the country that we had never visited before and it was great. Thank you.

  • "In a great location for accessing the area."

Magpie does sit side on to the road so there is some traffic noise but not too much as it is a country lane. There is some area to walk the dog although they do have to be kept on a lead because of the horses. There are low beams in the bedroom and shower room, so tall people beware. Had a lovely few days and it was nice and peaceful here.

We much appreciate your comments and we are glad you had a lovely stay. There are a few reasons why we ask guests to keep their dogs on leads during their stay. All four of our cottages have the possibility of a dog staying at any one time, therefore to control fouling on the cottage lawn and the potential of any aggressive dog behaviour and interaction, control on a lead is the better option. We do also have guests visiting, with and without young children, who are not dog friendly, so for their benefit we do ask for dogs to be on a lead. Outside of the cottage area we do allow dog walking through our land and along a path to our top fields where there are horses being led, ridden and under instruction and as you have commented for our guests safety and their dogs we ask for them to be controlled on a lead. Thank you Property Owner

Thank you for your comments. Currently Magpie cottage is provided with a two-person wooden garden bench at the front of the property. During the summer months the remaining 3 cottages are provided with a small table and two chairs. There is limited space at the front of Magpie cottage for a table and chairs, this is the reason for the garden bench. However, there is potentially room to extend/clear a space in Magpie garden to facilitate a small table and chairs, we will look into this. Kind regards Property Owner

Only minor fault is the lack of dishwasher, which we're too lazy to manage without nowadays. I did bang my head a couple of times on the low beam in the bathroom; but that is most likely down to my own forgetfulness, since my wife didn't bang hers at all.

No dishwasher in the property though listed in information on the cottage For very tall people they may find the upstairs and especially the bathroom challenging to use the facilities. Large beams run through the roof, though clearly marked with ‘Beware signs’. We had a large car fortunately not all hte cottages were let but when they all are parking may be a problem.
