The property

A superb Grade II* listed 17th century townhouse, built in 1653 on Berwick-upon-Tweed's historic Quay Walls, with stunning views over the River Tweed estuary and its historic bridge.

The interior of this property has been styled with great attention to detail, with calming hues and delightful fabrics giving this cottage a homely feel with an added touch of luxury.

The sitting room has a delightful, warming woodburner and comfortable chairs and sofa, the kitchen is spacious with hand-painted furniture and a range cooker which will delight any aspiring chef, while the large dining table is a great place to gather for family meals or to plan the forthcoming holiday activities.

When the evening draws to a close, the charming staircase invites guests to wend their way upwards and melt into the pillow-soft beds.

Plantation shutters at most of the windows give guests privacy when required, but also the opportunity to throw them open and simply enjoy watching the everyday hustle and bustle of the River Tweed below, with fishing boats, swans and various water birds all regular visitors.

There is no specific outdoor space at this gorgeous cottage, but with it's enviable location perched on the walls, you won't even notice!

Why not take a stroll from the doorstep along the quay walls, pop along for a pint to the nearby pub or wander amongst the delightful art shops, cafes and restaurants just two minutes’ away.

The area around Berwick is steeped in history; the battlefields of Flodden and Halidon Hill are just a short drive away, as are the many castles and golden beaches of the Heritage Coast.

If history and the countryside are not for you, then the East Coast railway can have you in Edinburgh and Newcastle in under an hour, with shopping and restaurants galore.

An excellent base for exploring Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.

Berwick is England’s most northerly town and changed hands 13 times whilst the English and the Scots fought for around 400 years for control of the Borders! The history is delightfully shown in the town’s museum. Nowadays this small coastal town retains much of its charm, with quaint narrow streets enclosed within great Elizabethan walls, fortified with bastions, built against attacks in the 1500s and walks along these offer spectacular views over the coast and river estuary to Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island. The town even boasts some medieval parts and the most Georgian architecture in any English town and offers excellent amenities including shops/supermarkets, cafés, organic food shops, restaurants and pubs, a weekly market and a quirky micro-pub and brewery whilst the Maltings Arts Centre provides an extensive programme of cultural events including music, theatre and cinema. Berwick is an ideal base to explore Northumberland’s many fabulous castles dotted along the coast and up into the Scottish Borders where there are many stately homes to visit. Regular tours of the town are conducted by a local historian and river boat cruises are also available. The River Tweed has always been famous for its salmon and is still regarded today as one of the best salmon fishing rivers in the country, with Berwick still having a very small fishing fleet. Fishing, golf and riding are all available locally and there is a leisure centre in Tweedmouth offering a pool with waves and flume. One mile away is the seaside resort of Spittal, with its sandy beaches. Berwick has excellent public transport and there is a frequent train service to both Newcastle, Edinburgh and Durham.
