  • "Thank you for a lovely stay at this cottage which fulfilled all our expectations."

Cosy , well equipped peaceful . The weather helped to make this a great weekend for celebrating my husband’s birthday. We ate in every night as we hadn’t managed to book a meal out but actually we were glad we had as driving from such a remote place at night would have been challenging in the dark. Several potholes on local roads!!

  • "Red Squirrel cottage proved to be a lovely place to relax in fantastic surroundings."

As described, it was remote but that is part of the charm. It was clean, well equipped, warm and had a very attractive garden. Numerous birds, Roe deer and the cute Red Squirrels provided lots of entertainment. We've been using cottages in all parts of the country for over 40 years, and can safely say that Red Squirrel cottage is the best we've ever stayed in. On our next visit to the area, if available, we will stay at Red Squirrel cottage.

  • "Red squirrel cottage is a great place to stay especially if you want to get away from it all."

We stayed at the beginning of November and the cottage was so warm and cosy … we didn’t use the log burner as it would have been too hot ! Even with all the rain there’s been we got out walking and were thankful for the washing machine etc as we did get somewhat muddy. The Rose and Thistle (alwinton) and Star (Harbottle) provide a warm welcome with great food and beer. Other pubs in area also seemed to be open. We took some food with us but that wasn’t really necessary as the coop (rothbury) and spar/fuel station (thropton) have everything you need as well as butcher and baker in rothbury. Details and photos on Skyes are very accurate… we love Northumberland and we’d like to return to red squirrel cottage at a different time of year to make the most of the longer days.

We didn't want to come home. Nicola is amazing, a she emailed before we arrived to let us know of a road closure that we may come accross. We emailed mid-week to let her know the bucket was short of bird food, and nuts for the red squirrels, within 5 mins Nicola was re-stocking them. The cottage was well equipment, it felt like home from home. We came home feeling fresh, recharged and relaxed after spending a week here. We will be planning on returning in the future. Thank you for our welcome pack and for making our week perfect.

We arrived stressed from living a nonstop hectic lifestyle as we've been busy for the last 5 years. We left feeling completely relaxed. Red Squirrel Cottage is homely, set in a quiet, beautiful landscape where losing yourself in the silence, whilst watching the red squirrels is both easy and rewarding. It's the absolute opposite of what we've become accustomed to and was simply divine. The cottage is like a home from home, well equipped, and Nicola was perfect. Once she had established, we had arrived and were happy we were left alone with her contact details should we need anything. The welcome pack was very unexpected and generous. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

The pleasant and helpful owner Nicola lived a few doors down from the cottage so was around if there were any queries. The welcome pack was very generous and we particularly liked the fact that local Northumbrian items were part of this, the chocolate shortbread is some of the best I have had! As the name suggests the best feature of the cottage is the wildlife , we did not have to wait long before the red squirrels came for the hazelnuts Nicola had kindly left for them, there were plenty of different birds in the garden along with some pheasants. It was a very relaxing week and we look forward to making a return visit. Thank you Nicola for making us feel very welcome.

You can always be assured of well presented, equipped and clean properties. Squirrel Cottage has to be one of the best properties we have stayed at. From the well maintained gardens and grounds to the welcoming wood-burning stove, which was great to come "home" to after a day out exploring the area. We managed to Tour Alnwick Castle. ( Do the History and State Room tours first) Arrived at 10.00am and left at 4.30pm and still did not see everything. Our trip to Holy Island was an experience. Chose a tide time that gave us 6hrs to walk round the island at a leisurely pace. Although Squirrel Cottage was out of the way it was only 10/15 mins from Thropton where there is a new Filling Station/Supermarket/Butcher/Baker/Wine shop all under one roof. There is plenty of walking immediately of site from the cottage, and the history of Biddlecome Chapel is fascinating. Well done Nicola for providing such and ideal home form home and relaxing break.

The garden is enchanting and the wildlife superb we had 30 species of bird from in or over the garden, 4 species of bat hunting over the garden and the Red Squirrels kept us entertained daily .
