  • "Great lodge for a getaway."

The sunrise was outstanding with the lodge balcony/decking facing east. Only thing I would recommend is a glass bin the same size as the general waste and plastic ones.

  • "Fabulous property which exceeded or expectations- the photos do not do the lodge justice."

Clean, comfortable beds and sofas, stunning views and well appointed kitchen. The owners have clearly been listening to feedback and made changes recommended by others before us. Would stay again.

Firstly we struggled to find the property, we tried both postcodes that were listed and neither one would get us there. I phoned the emergency number listed on the Sykes website which I got no reply to. I had no contact details for the owner of the property, fortunately we were given some help by a member of the public. After eventually arriving at the property, by this time it was nearly dark, we started unpacking to find dirty cupboards that we had to clean before we could put our food away - not impressed after a very long journey with a later arriving time due to extra time needed for cleaning (not that there was any sign of this). As it was nearly dark some of the bulbs in the lights weren’t working which we had to sort, only one lot of lights outside worked and the light over the front door didn’t work either. After unpacking we then tried to cook some food, the cooker was filthy and looked like it had never been cleaned, the baking trays had seen better days(rusty). Very little cooking utensils and the dishwasher needed a really good clean aswell (cobwebs and mounds of dust/dirt in the hinges). There were no doormats to wipe your feet, which would keep the property cleaner. There was even a weed growing threw the floor in the downstairs bathroom. 2 mirrors for 5 adults and 2 bathrooms! There were no replacement bin bags and still a dripping tap! It’s a shame as it wasn’t a cheap property to rent for the week and we have been with Sykes before and been very happy with them. In short, a beautiful property which clearly is not given the attention it deserves.

By far the majority had a point but possibly a little nit picky. On arrival most of the crockery was found to be grubby, however we discovered that the dishwasher filter was clogged and couldnt have been cleaned for quite some time, once we had rectified this problem and put the crockery back through the dishwasher all that was fine. In the advert it said that fuel including logs were provided but the log store was virtually empty. We understand its the end of summer and prabably not filled yet. Still not much of a problem as my husband found a stack of logs in the surrounding woods lol. Also as previously mentioned in customer reviews there was no furniture in the upstairs bedroom lounge area which would have been perfect for sitting and enjoying the fantastic view. Good to note, WIFI is not free, infact quite costly at £6 for 250 MB. On the plus side, beautiful location, spacious and very comfortable including the beds. For those who like their privacy this place is excellent. The wild life ranged from Roe deer on the lawn to buzzards so close that you could almost reach out and touch them. Dont be put off by bad reviews..... this place is lovely. Oh tap still dripping.

Some sockets not operational in the kitchen, rendering the microwave inoperable. Luckily we took our own cooking utensils, as there are very limited utensils in the property. The wifi dongle had no data available, it had all been used before our arrival. There is no hoover, odd for a property which is pet friendly? Covid cleaning regime? As you know, we were instructed on late arrival, due to deep cleaning, I can assure you this property was not deep cleaned. The myriad of glasses in the cupboard were filthy, I struggled to find one without greasy finger prints, the same with the cutlery. This is unacceptable during these times. The kitchen has not been deep cleaned ever by the looks of it. You need to get this sorted ASAP. Such a shame, as the location and view are lovely. Remove the "luxury" description, and get the cleaner to do a proper job, and this would manage people's expectations. Sadly, the poor reviews we read were accurate. The property is in dire need of some TLC and maintenance. Regards, Alan.

The property is lovely in a fantastic location but it is let down by the facilities and cleanliness. We had no Wi-fi for the first three days and thereafter it was often not working. The property was grubby and the carpet in one of the bedrooms was filthy. The upstairs shower did not work and the downstairs shower did not drain properly so you stood in dirty water. The dripping kitchen tap has still not been fixed, it’s amazing how loud and annoying this can be when you are trying to sleep on an otherwise silent night! The cooking equipment is sparse and dirty, you could not cook a simple roast dinner for example. One of the downstairs patio doors could not be opened as a key was snapped off in the lock and the other was really difficult to open as the key did not turn in the lock properly. This Probably explains how someone managed to break the key in the other lock. The property boasts an upstairs seating area but it is actually totally unfurnished, a void space, so you would need to sit on the floor, such a shame as the views are wonderful. The barbecue was filthy, there are no outside comfortable chairs to relax in and there is a ceramic pot by the lodge with a large number of used dog poo bags in it! A welcome basket was provided but was nothing more than a quantity of cheap sweets and biscuits. There was no information whatsoever about local attractions or the immediate vicinity for dog walking etc. The beds and sofas were clean and comfortable and the house martins nesting around the property are a delight but all in all The Lodge only provided us with basic accommodation and not at all what we expected or indeed what we believe we paid for. Hopefully the owner will take note of these reviews as it would not be difficult to remedy the problems.

Two cars in our party found the directions unhelpful, had they said turn left at the Waterloo Arms and continue for a half a mile, then take a left and make your way to the end of this road ....... There was only one mirror that we could find upstairs although this was remedied quickly when we called the Sykes team and they brought one to us. The bins when we arrived were overflowing and we were told they would be emptied by the beginning of the week, however, they were not emptied until Thursday, the day before we left. We were a bit disappointed with the cleanliness of the place. The floors indoors (under the couches) were covered in dust, the oven was dirty and the BBQ hadn't been cleaned out since the last residents. The outside of the Lodge was really dirty; window sills, around the garden area and the decking was covered in bird droppings, so not a good area to sit and relax.

There were dirty plates and crockery in the cupboards, a wasps nest in the wood store, both showers did not work apart from being either boiling hot or cold and expelling a trickle of water, the blinds in the bedroom kept falling down, there was a leaking tap in the kitchen, and no shower curtain in the upstairs bathroom ... There were dirty plates and crockery in the cupboards, a wasps nest in the wood store, both showers did not work apart from being either boiling hot or cold and expelling a trickle of water, the blinds in the bedroom kept falling down, there was a leaking tap in the kitchen, and no shower curtain in the upstairs bathroom which made the floor sopping wet each time you had a shower. There was no welcome information or leaflets on things to do, no information on where to eat, no free wi fi, and worst of all with 3 kids no proper Ariel reception for the tv or DVD player so our ‘cosy evenings by the fire’ were interrupted by constantly messing around with the Ariel. When contacted, the caretaker of the property did sort out the tap, the filthy windows, the wasps nest and get us extra chairs for outside which were also lacking. When on asking about the showers, the Wi-Fi and the rubbish reception however I was made to feel like they had been more than agreeable to my requests and that they would like me to go through Sykes cottages if I had any further problems, hence causing us to attempt to get through to a phone line which had a long waiting time and so we just gave up. It’s such a shame because it’s such a beautiful place, but apart from the feeling of a real luxury, relaxing holiday, it felt like everything was an effort. We came away feeling really let down.

Hi Mrs Dyson Thanks for your review and we are sorry things were not up to your standard during your stay. I would like to mention the following points. There was a welcome pack left on the kitchen table for your arrival. And I also gave you information on towns for shopping via text message I can only apologise if there had been any dirty crockery in the cupboards but usually these are all checked and re washed if any are found dirty. The wasp nest pointed out was only spotted by yourself and Removed by our local pest man with in 12 hours. The windows were cleaned within 12 hours. The kitchen tap was only reported to be leaking that morning by the previous guests and this was also fixed within 12 hours. The shower curtain wasn't an issue as I previously mentioned it is a wet room. We have never had any issues regarding the showers not working previously or since your departure The TV again is working fine. This was installed with a digital ariel when we opened to improve reception. We removed all DVD and disks due to covid-19 which i mentioned to you on one of our phone calls We also mentioned we do not provide a Netflix package The WiFi has a mobile router and can be moved round the property to get a better signal but due to the rural location of the property we have mentioned the WiFi isn't as strong as we would have liked. This is mentioned on Sykes and on our info pack in the property Property Owner

The village of Chirnside occupies an elevated position overlooking the River Whiteadder and offers stunning views across the magnificent Cheviot and Lammermuir Hills. A number of interesting landmarks depict the village's long history, including a 16th Century dovecot and a beautiful parish church, believed to date back to the 12th Century. Each summer, the Jim Clark Rally, the only 'closed roads' race on mainland Britain, takes place in and around the Borders as a memorial to the village’s home born champion. Just 9 miles away lies the charming, coastal town of Berwick, boasting quaint, narrow streets enclosed within Elizabethan walls, excellent shopping and dining facilities and an interesting arts centre. The local area affords fantastic fishing, golf, walking and riding opportunities and the nearby resorts of Eyemouth, Coldingham and Spittal offer soft, sandy beaches, ideal for a relaxing afternoon. A brilliant location for exploring historic Edinburgh, the stunning Northumberland coastline, and the attractions of Holy Island, Paxton House, Manderson, Bamburgh and Alnwick Castle.
