Mrs Smith “A lovely comfortable cottage within easy reach of the beautiful coastline at St Abb’s and Eyemouth and the attractions around the border towns of Kelso, Jedburgh and Melrose.”
Everything we needed was provided in the cottage. One small thing was that the quilt on the king size bed was slightly too small so there was a bit of tug o war during the night but that was a very minor thing. Would happily return to the cottage again as there was so much more to explore in the area.

Mr Gravett “There is a microwave there but I don't think that it is shown in the website information.”
- Mr Gravett, September 2020Mr Clayton “It was exactly as advertised - great little cottage and the advice on local attractions and eateries left by owners was spot on.”
Had a great time and would definitely recommend this place.
- Mr Clayton, August 2020Mr Cameron “Southfield was ideal for 3 adults.”
Two good sized bedrooms, cosy sitting/dining room, convenient kitchen and parking at the front door. It was very clean and provided everything that we needed. Chirnside is an excellent base and is famous for being the birth place of the Racing Driver Jim Clark. His grave is in a nearby Church grave yard and there is a museum about him in Duns. We were very lucky with the weather during our stay and travelling by car around the area (Alnwick, the Borders and East Lothian) was delightful. Very little traffic at this time of year and the hedgerows were full of blossom, the verges covered in snowdrops and daffodils, the snow topped hills (the Cheviots) in the distance and the fields full of lambs. We enjoyed walking the Elizabethan walls at Berwick Upon Tweed and would recommend The Maltings for lunch. Alnwick Castle lovely to walk around it has something for all ages - the Giant in the Lake, the rose gardens and water feature, the Harry Potter connection, shops and Tree house Cafe. Eyemouth has a working harbour, beaches,Seals to feed, crabs to catch and access to the coastal walk. There are lots of castles(some habitable some ruins) throughout the Borders. The nearest one is in Duns and there is a walk around the lake open to the public and the castle is used for events. Floors castle partly open in the summer, lovely gardens and The Terrace Cafe and Deli very good. Lovely river walks at Coldstream, North Berwick a lovely coastal town with East and West beaches, boat trips around the Bass Rock and to Fidra Island (seasonal). The ruins of Tantallion Castle on the outskirts and a Bird observatory near the harbour. Very easy to fill your days.
- Mr Cameron, February 2020Mrs Brown “2nd visit to this lovely cottage, great for walking dogs straight from the door if you don’t want to travel, local amenities are good.”
Will be back again in the future.
- Mrs Brown, February 2020Mr Wainwright “Lovely cottage and very handy for us as in the village where our family live but the comfort of the furniture not fit for purpose very old sofa cheaply made very very uncomfortable a large bed in the main bedroom but springs in mattress coming through needs changing urgently so really disappointed as this rental was very very expensive ?”
????????we know we booked for August so hence price but the stay was painful !!!!!!
- Mr Wainwright, August 2019Mrs Hill “Fabulous little cottage on the Scottish borders.”
Clean, cosy and well situated. Only thing letting it down was a lack of kitchen equipment. Could have done with a decent baking tray and a large deep sided frying pan or wok.
- Mrs Hill, June 2019Miss Houlihan “A lovely cottage well positioned to see the many wonderful houses, gardens and beaches of the borders area.”
The only things I would change would be the uncomfortable sofa and the bed in large bedroom (a mattress topper would help against the harsh springs!).
- Miss Houlihan, May 2019Mrs Rowden “Cottage was lovely, cosy, clean and extremely well equipped!”
We will definitely be back again. Thank you x
- Mrs Rowden, May 2019Mrs Gourlay “Being of a certain age and having hip problems would have been better if seating in lounge was a little higher.”
Very low chairs and sofa. Also downstairs shower I found difficult to get the heat up.
- Mrs Gourlay, May 2019Mr Harper “Southfield Cottage is in the heart of the village with everything nearby.”
Very clean, cosy and comfortable. It is well equipped, especially the coffee machine, everything you need is there. The goodies on arrival is a nice touch. Overall the cottage is very good in a really nice village.
- Mr Harper, March 2019Mrs Ternent “The cottage is gorgeous and has everything you need - and more.”
It is immaculately clean and very well presented. We had a great week here and felt at home almost instantly. It is a very cosy cottage and we made the most of the wood burning stove. The local pub, the Waterloo Arms, is very welcoming and the locals are very friendly. The village of Chirnside has everything you need - a Co-op, a newsagent, a butchers and a fish and chip shop. Margaret, the owner, is lovely and has made sure the cottage caters for every need. I would definitely recommend a holiday in this beautiful cottage.
- Mrs Ternent, March 2019Mrs Pollock “Would recommend this cottage to friends and relatives the owner Margaret is lovely and would stay there again”
- Mrs Pollock, December 2018Mrs Burns “This cottage is really lovely and cosy .”
ideal place for visiting surrounding areas . would definitely book again .
- Mrs Burns, October 2018Mrs Milne “Brilliant from start to finish.”
The whole experience from booking onwards was fabulous! I spoke to a girl online at Sykes and she was great and so helpful. The cottage was lovely. It was immaculate and had everything to suit our needs. There was even shortbread and doggie biscuits there. There was a great pub 2 mins walk away and the staff and customers were so friendly! Couldn't fault it at all. Would definitely recommend Sykes Cottages!
- Mrs Milne, October 2018Ms Thorold “Lovely cottage which has been renovated to a high standard in a village location.”
Very clean and is equipped with everything you need. Good pub nearby which did really nice bar meals. I took my dogs with me and the only downside was that the garden is not enclosed and I could not let them off their leads. I would certainly recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to explore Berwickshire and beyond and it's situation has easy links to Edinburgh.
- Ms Thorold, August 2018Mr Woodward “Lovely warm cottage .”
Well equipped .lots to do in the area
- Mr Woodward, August 2018Ms Davidson “Great location, nice wee pub nearby, good Co-op in the village.”
- Ms Davidson, August 2018Mrs Noton “A beautiful well equipped cottage, just right for all the sites to explore.”
- Mrs Noton, August 2018Mrs Pearson “This was beautiful cottage in a lovely welcoming village.”
The cottage was very well appointed and comfortable. We felt at home as soon as we arrived. The area is great for sight seeing with a lot of historical houses nearby.
- Mrs Pearson, June 2018Mrs Crampin “Southfield cottage is in a quiet part of the charming village of Chirnside, within easy walking distance of a co-op shop, butchers, post office and pub.”
The cottage is comfortable and has everything necessary for an enjoyable holiday. The cottage is dog friendly, but the garden is not enclosed, so you'll need to be with him/her for toilet trips, something I have no problem with. The village has an interesting history and there are numerous footpaths in the village and further afield along the river Whiteadder. All the Scottish borders attractions are an easy drive away as are Holy Island and Seahouses, for a boat trip to the Farne Islands.
- Mrs Crampin, June 2018Mrs Smith “Everything was great.”
Only area for improvement is the heating regulation which was tricky to get right. Perhaps better written instructions for the radiators would be an idea? No heating in kitchen so a rather chilly place to work
- Mrs Smith, November 2017Mrs Deacon “Lovely cottage, very comfortable and well equipped .”
We loved the lovely flowers ,wine etc that were there when we arrived .It's in a good location for visiting all the Scottish border towns .Would recommend xx

About the location
CHIRNSIDE
Duns 6 miles; Berwick-upon-Tweed 9 miles.
The village of Chirnside occupies an elevated position overlooking the River Whiteadder and offers stunning views across the magnificent Cheviot and Lammermuir Hills. A number of interesting landmarks depict the village's long history, including a 16th Century dovecot and a beautiful parish church, believed to date back to the 12th Century. Each summer, the Jim Clark Rally, the only 'closed roads' race on mainland Britain, takes place in and around the Borders as a memorial to the village’s home born champion. Just 9 miles away lies the charming, coastal town of Berwick, boasting quaint, narrow streets enclosed within Elizabethan walls, excellent shopping and dining facilities and an interesting arts centre. The local area affords fantastic fishing, golf, walking and riding opportunities and the nearby resorts of Eyemouth, Coldingham and Spittal offer soft, sandy beaches, ideal for a relaxing afternoon. A brilliant location for exploring historic Edinburgh, the stunning Northumberland coastline, and the attractions of Holy Island, Paxton House, Manderson, Bamburgh and Alnwick Castle. Chirnside is a great holiday location all year round.
