About the location

DENHOLM

Hawick 4.8 miles; Jedburgh 6 miles.

The small village of Denholm sits in Teviotdale in the River Teviot valley. Only 16 miles from the English border, it nestles between the surrounding hills of Ruberslaw and the Minto Hills. The prehistoric earliest inhabitants of Denholm date from 2000-3000 years ago and there is evidence of Roman occupation in the countryside around the village. The early hamlet of Denum was destroyed during 16th century English raids and the current village, planned around the green, dates from the 17th century. In the centre of the green is a statue to Dr John Leyden, erected in 1861, and it honours this poet and orientalist who was born in the village. Today Denholm is a conservation area and the pleasing mix of pubs, café, bistro, butcher, vintage jewellery and antique shop and patrol station offer much to the visitor. A full range of amenities are available in Hawick and Jedburgh, which are both close by.
