  • "Comfortable home with a fabulous view and in a great location for exploring the Northumberland coast."

It had everything we needed. Thank you for a great stay.

  • "Comfy cottage in a great location close to the beach and local pubs/shops."

Gorgeous views of the sea from the upstairs window. We had read the previous reviews on the kitchen and brought our own pans but this wasn't necessary as new ones have been added. Plenty of parking space on site. The only negatives were the boiler running during the night as it's right by the main bedroom and a thick winter duvet in July which meant we were very hot at night. Some information about the local area/where to recycle glass etc would have been very helpful as the only information we could find was a request to water the plants. During the summer (2024) there is currently a different street food truck at the memorial hall every Thursday evening selling takeaway food which we really enjoyed and would recommend to other guests.

  • "The view from the cottage is truly wonderful and the cottage itself is well situated for the local shop, garage, pubs and hotel restaurant."

There is no "welcome pack" so it is necessary to bring refreshments for when you arrive. The kitchen would benefit from one or two small saucepans and some good oven gloves and information on local holiday attractions/events and maybe a Visitors Book in the cottage would be helpful. Guidance on the heating controls could be useful too but we contacted the owner who willingly came out at short notice to resolve our issue. We didn't find table and chairs so as there was only the wooden picnic table for outside seating, a few outside comfy chairs would be beneficial. Overall a comfortable cottage in a good location and highly recommended.

  • "The cottage was as described, cosy, comfortable, well equipped and with fantastic views over Embleton bay and towards Dunstanburgh castle."

A great location for pubs, beach, walks and the village farm shop. Bedding and towels were provided and were of very good quality. There was no welcome note or property instructions (e.g. wifi, central heating, bins/recycling, local amenities, etc.) which would have been useful. There is no obvious way of controlling the central heating - switching the heating controls to 'off' and turning down the thermostat had no effect. Some radiator controls are not accessible, meaning that some rooms were uncomfortably warm. The central heating timer had been set but not to particularly convenient times, with noise from the boiler room in the main bedroom at night. On the plus side, the bathroom was nice and warm.

The views are second to none, and the location is what we come for. The cottage is comfortable and the perfect home for us with two children.

  • "Cosy cottage with stunning views."

Some of the facilities are definitely showing signs of wear. I would recommend bringing your own frying pan, spatula & oven gloves as the ones provided are very worn. As mentioned in other reviews there are no small saucepans. One other point to note…there is a short steep track that leads up hill into the large walled courtyard where the properties are located, we couldn’t get up the track in snow & had to park on the road. Overall we had a great time & would stay there again

  • "I would definitely go here again but was very surprised that the cottage had no information file, most places have details like nearest vets, drs etc and any local walks or places they would recommend."

The directions could be better as doent point out that you need to go though the stone gateway as no name outside. This may sound petty but every single holiday we have there is always a little welcome gift and we were disappointed. It is in a great place, very comfortable with lovely views.

  • "Great views and located in a very unspoilt part of the Northumbria coastline."

The view from upstairs window was outstanding, and hard to beat, and owner-provided binoculars were a nice touch! The main bed was comfortable and bedding was good quality linen. On the other hand, cleanliness could have been improved in a few places, i.e. under sofa and between the seat cushions, the kitchen really needs improvement (as others have said - e.g. basic oven, no small pans, no egg cups) and a fan would have been really useful as upstairs gets VERY warm in the sun. Also..no local information at all (e.g. recycling days, where to eat, places to visit). None of this detracted from a really enjoyable stay, but feel more could be done with this cottage.

  • "Generally happy with the cottage, it is in a wonderful location a few minutes walk from the beach and with great views."

Would happily stay there again. Main problem we had was getting clothes dry, it was a fairly wet week so difficult to hang washing outside, an indoor clothes horse would have been great. Otherwise the cottage is well equipped, although the kitchen is a little cramped when cooking for 6 people.

  • "The location of the cottage and the grounds were very good."

We loved the views from the cottage and watching the wildlife. We felt that the kitchen could have been better equipped and that some of the pans should be replaced. An inside clothes horse would be useful for when it’s wet.

  • "We really enjoyed staying at Fidra for the week."

The cottage is in a really quiet and quaint area in Embleton. The view from the cottage is absolutely fabulous - stunning green fields and the sea. The bedrooms are decent sizes and the living room is extremely homely and comfortable. My only constructive criticisms would be that the upstairs flooring is extremely creaky. When sleeping downstairs, if people are upstairs, you can hear every footstep. This could do with being sorted. Also, some of the furniture is looking a little tired and could do with replacing (bedroom wardrobes). The dining room table and chairs are lovely and roomy: however, the chairs are extremely heavy so my parents-in-law and children struggled to move them. Overall, we had a brilliant stay and would definitely return.

Warm (underfloor heating in bathroom much appreciated in February). clean, comfortable property with everything you need for an enjoyable self catering holiday. Plenty of room for six of us and our dog. So peaceful, but two minutes walk from pub, shop and playground. A pleasant 15 minute walk down the hill to the beach with those incredible views.

About the location

EMBLETON

Craster 3 miles; Beadnell 4 miles; Alnwick 7 miles.

The pretty village of Embleton is ideally placed for exploring one of the most attractive stretches of Northumberland's Heritage Coastline. A beautiful grassy path runs from the village to neighbouring Craster, alongside the sea and past Dunstanburgh Castle - the largest ruined castle in Northumberland. Embleton itself has a village pub and a local hotel, and there is an excellent range of amenities in nearby Alnwick. The gardens at nearby Howick Hall are open during the summer and are noted for their beauty, whilst Alnwick Castle and Garden are a 'must-see' when visiting the area. For the keen golfer, Dunstanburgh Links Course is about 1 mile away - just one of several excellent courses in the vicinity.
