  • "A beautiful cosy cottage for lovely Autumn getaway!"

The cottage was warm, cosy and comfortable. Both bedrooms were a really good size, and the beds comfortable. The wood burning stove in the lounge was a real treat and we got it going relatively easily. There was plenty of space to cook and eat too. The surrounding area was lovely. The pub opposite, was welcoming and had a good selection of beers. The location was great, a great base for exploring the coast as well as inland. Alnwick for the big supermarkets wasn't far, and Wooler was great for the little bits. We definitely hope to be back soon!

I appreciated the amount of kitchen equipment available, far better than other places we have visited.

  • "Fantastic property in lovely central location, very comfy & we'll equipped, only reason didn't give it full marks is single bathroom with toilet which we knew about when booking but can be a bit of a pain when sharing with another couple as we were & back 'garden' very small ."

Pub landlady & regulars on other side of road very friendly. All said we had a great week here.

Perfect to come to home to after a day's walking. Very sweet neighbour who gave us tips about local walks. Wine and biscuits left for us was a nice touch.

  • "The cottage itself was absolutely beautiful - undoubtedly the most attractive cottage we’ve ever stayed in - including several National Trust properties."

We very much appreciated the welcome gift of wine, milk and biscuits. There were only a couple of tiny niggles that prevented an all round ‘top marks’ score - and not all are in the owners gift to remedy e.g. the fact that the Queen’s Head no longer does meals ( however the bar staff and locals were all very friendly and the recommended alternatives were excellent - but a drive away!) The outdoor seating area of the cottage was tiny (extremely curious arrangement of garden space with neighbours) and only got the sun in the morning, so fine for breakfast - but also no space for comfortable seating. We would have loved to have sat out in the evening especially since the weather gorgeous that week - also because the stone walled cottage itself was rather chilly - necessitating putting on the log burner each evening. We use a log burner at home and found the one at the cottage hard to fathom out and it felt pretty inefficient despite it being enormous. Both of us would have preferred a slightly firmer mattress but fully appreciate that people’s tastes differ and you can’t suit everyone. Lastly we were slightly concerned by the presence of some odd spore like material on the underside of the shelves in the main bedroom wardrobe. No idea what it was but somewhat unnerving. Sorry to be so picky - especially since we were, on the whole, absolutely bowled over by the cottage - and the village. We would certainly recommend it - and have done - (albeit with the above mentioned provisos) and we wouldn’t hesitate to book it again should we ever need a place to stay in the area - we’d just pack more jumpers! Thank you.

  • "Lavender Cottage was a joy, everything we could have wished for."

Great location to explore beautiful Northumberland. One of the many reasons we chose Lavender Cottage was that there was a s a pub in the village. Unfortunately The Queens Head wasn’t the warm friendly place we were hoping for, the nearest pub doing food was The Tankerville Arms. This is a great place but involved driving.

  • "Absolutely lovely cottage, beautiful fittings and had everything we needed."

Great information too. The owner was so helpful when we had a problem with the smoke alarms too. Nothing was too much trouble. Just a couple of things, the TV aerial cable is very weak and the signal was badly affected at times. Also the outside garden light was not working. Great experience!

Beautifully presented and the main bedroom is huge! The welcome gifts were greatly appreciated after a long drive and even the doggies got a treat. We had a lovely stay and the cottage is ideally situated to explore the beauty of Northumberland.

  • "Had a very pleasant few days at Lavender Cottage at the end of April."

The cottage was really clean, well equipped with large comfortable bedrooms. The wood burner was a welcome addition as the weather was quite cold and without it the cottage would have been a bit cool in the evenings. Location was nice and quiet and handy for lots of visitor attractions.

  • "Generously proportioned and elegantly restored cottage in a pleasant and handily placed village."

We used it as a base for walking the Cheviots - a lovely area - but on the days when the weather kept us from the high fells we popped to the coast. Opposite the village pub, which makes up in friendliness what it lacks in beer choice. Very comfortable stay - two happy and tired dogs at the end of the week.

We'd booked last minute, at a time when cottages were hard to come by - and couldn't believe our luck when we arrived. The cottage is lovely, and the location is ideal for a stay in Northumberland (15 min drive to Alnwick, a bit longer to the beach). Will likely come again. Thanks!

The cottage is a great mixture of traditional and contemporary styles and had everything we wished for. It has a stylish living room, a good log fire and the kitchen is modern and well equipped. The bedrooms are both really well presented, with comfy beds and a good range of furniture. We found Glanton to be a quiet Northumberland village and a great place to exlpore from, with some good local walks available and excellent outdoor eating experiences within reach. We would love to go back again for a longer stay.

  • "We were delighted with our stay at Lavender Cottage."

Darren’s welcome email was a lovely touch and provided helpful information about finding the property, local services and things to do/places to go. He also invited us to contact him if there were any problems, which was reassuring and thankfully unnecessary. The cottage is lovely. It had everything we needed, including the peace and quiet of a sleepy hamlet. It’s a great location for exploring the coast, borders and Kielder as well as Alnwick and Cragside; had it been a little further from the summer solstice, stargazing would have been excellent, too. There’s no problem with parking on the road right outside and the majority of traffic we saw was flocks of sheep. Our basic checklist is a sense of security, a decent hot shower and a comfortable bed and Lavender Cottage delivered all three. It’s cool when the temperature rises with very effective heating panels when it drops a little cooler. I expect that the fires in lounge and bedroom would be a treat in late autumn/winter. The kitchen was well set-up with crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment and lacked only a freezer compartment for ice cubes/packs, which is a minor concern. It was spotlessly clean and light with a good amount of space. Not only was the lounge a comfortable and relaxing place, but there were games and books for entertainment and we were able to login to our own Netflix account on the TV. Both bedrooms are beautiful and the master much more spacious than we’d expected. The addition of a hairdryer would make it perfect. We couldn’t have asked for a better place for our holiday and we’re keen to return ourselves as well as recommending to family and friends.

The property

Resting in the small village of Glanton in Northumberland, close to the county town of Alnwick, is Lavender Cottage, a charming and contemporary property, ideal for a couple or a group of four guests wanting to access the coast and countryside of Northumberland.

Parking is available on the roadside in front of the property, where you'll see plenty of lavender in bloom as you take a few steps up and enter through the front door.

The neutrally styled sitting room has soft cream carpets, lovely shutter windows and a choice of two sofas placed around the coffee table, where you can relax in front of the woodburning stove, enjoying the warmth from the fire as you switch on the Freeview TV and enjoy your favourite shows, or pick up a book from the bookcase and curl up with it as you get lost in a story.

There is a dining table in the corner of the room, where you can enjoy a home-cooked meal together, lovingly prepared in the bright and airy kitchen, equipped with all of the necessary appliances you’ll need during your self-catering holiday.

The family bathroom is just off the kitchen, with a shower over bath offering you the choice when it comes to getting ready for each day.

Head upstairs to find two very generously-sized double bedrooms, one with an antique bed frame, shutter windows and large built-in wardrobes, either side of a feature fireplace, while the other is mostly white painted, with a feature fireplace, lovely up-cycled wardrobe and a bookcase.

Outside there is a small, enclosed patio with furniture, where you can enjoy a morning coffee or a spot of alfresco breakfast.

There is a pub opposite the property as well as a small shop in the village, while the county town of Alnwick offers a wider variety of amenities.

Alnwick is known for its imposing castle, recognisable by many as the setting of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter film franchise, while adjoining this is The Alnwick Garden, a huge garden with the Treehouse Restaurant and a fascinating poison garden, filled with toxic plants.

You are well-placed for discovering the Cheviots Hills, which straddles the Anglo-Scottish border and rests partly within the Northumberland National Park, offering fantastic hikes and spectacular views.

The national park is known for its dark skies and offers excellent star gazing opportunities, as well as the manmade woodland and reservoir at Kielder Forest, along with the nature reserves of Whitelee Moor and Kielderhead.

Northumberland's coastline, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is also within easy reach, with excellent walking, cycling and birdwatching opportunities as well as a host of lovely sandy beaches to choose from.

You are never too far from a fantastic day out with a stay at this beautiful cottage.
