  • "Spacious, warm, well equipped and comfortable house."

Gardens are very pleasant and large and would be lovely on warm summer days. The area is quiet and scenic with a super little pub and shop in the village.

  • "This is a fantastic cottage, a perfect size and layout."

The accommodation is comfortable and well equipped and the beds are the comfiest we have slept in. Just some minor feedback - the showers need a good clean to remove the mildew, with it being end of peak season. The owner was extremely helpful and contactable during our stay. The pub down the lane is an added bonus!

  • "This was the first opportunity the family had to get together pre covid."

It provided a relaxing and peaceful break in an idyllic location. The Orchards was was well equipped and spacious. Friendly local pub and lovely walks along the river and to Drake stone. We were fortunate with the weather but would consider returning in the Summer when it would be possible to enjoy bbqs in the garden. Thumbs up from the whole family. Thank you.

  • "Such a beautiful tranquil setting for a great peaceful holiday."

The exterior of cottage and gardens were superb, lovely to relax outside with the gentle murmuring of the river meandering along. We had exceptional weather which meant we could be outdoors. The cottage indoors is bright airy and spacious with a well equipped kitchen . Bedrooms are a great size with comfortable beds so good restful sleeps. Lovely lounge and conservatory to relax in in the evenings. We were a party of 6 so having space to enjoy your own company was perfect as we didn’t feel we had to be in each other’s faces 24/7. The cottage could do with a spot of maintenance, mostly cosmetic. The extractor light bulb needs replacing, the under cupboard lights also were not working. On the whole we had a fabulous week with the family in a beautiful cottage with breathtaking scenery on the doorstep.

  • "The Orchards is a wonderful place to relax and unwind if that’s your thing or plenty of walks straight from the door."

It’s so comfortable and peaceful with everything you could want in a holiday home and more. The beds are super comfy too. We had some lovely weather so were out in the garden quite a bit and the conservatory is great if you want to be quiet too. You can get to the coast easily and Cragside House is less than 15mins away. The Star pub is extremely handy and serves great food and hand made pizzas. This was our 2nd trip to The Orchards and we’re looking at going next year again. Thank you so much Mike

  • "We had a great stay at The Orchards."

Walks straight from the door, and a utility room to dump all your muddy boots in, which we needed as the weather wasn't great but it didn't stop us having a great time and meant we got to use the log burner! We were a party of 3 adults and were surprised to see that bedding was put on one double and 2 single beds. The other beds didn't have bedding on them and there wasn't any spare to use. We sorted the sleeping arrangements so we all had double beds and it wasn't a major issue just a minor niggle that could have easily been avoided if all the beds were made up or the question asked of which beds were preferred. We've been staying in holiday cottages for over 30 years and this is the first time this has happened. General cleanliness was good but dusty surfaces in some places. We liked that that you could ventral the heating yourself and the utilities were very good. Lots of outdoor space but we didn't get the chance to sit out. All in all we really enjoyed our time at The Orchards...oh and we have to mention the pillows. They were the comfiest we've ever slept on and we're ordering some for ourselves!

Cragside only about 15 mins away. It is definitely the best place we have ever stayed in Northumberland. Can’t wait to go again. Thank you Mike.

  • "Fantastic cottage in a lovely village."

We were a party of 6 adults, 2 children and a dog and the cottage had everything you could need for a comfortable stay. Fabulous garden to enjoy the nice evenings, plenty of place for the children and dog to play. The children also enjoyed taking fishing nets down to the little stream. The pub in the village, just a 2 minute walk away, served delicious food and was very welcoming. Location was great for visiting everywhere along the coast and lots of national trust properties. The information from the owner was very useful, recommending walks and pubs in the area. We all had a fabulous stay.

5* for owner's speed of response when boiler failed; friendly and effective help arrived within 2 hours of my e-mailing on Sunday morning. Hugely impressive! 1* for inadequate, or non-existent, supplies of day-to-day household consumables: washing-up liquid, washing detergent, dishwasher salt & rinse-aid, loo rolls & matches (for the woodburner). We purchased all these & the owner willingly reimbursed us.

Good size, good outdoor space, good facilities and things like the table tennis table in the garage and log burner in living room are a nice touch. The surrounding area is beautiful but very rural and quite hilly, something to consider if travelling with older guests. Dogs love it!! It is around 20 minutes to the nearest town (Rothbury c.8.5 miles).

  • "We stayed at the Orchards as a family of 8 on the 26th Nov."

Unfortunately for us storm Arwen hit that night and cut all power supply as well as felling trees that blocked the only road in and out! Despite this we had a lovely time here and fared better than some of the villagers as the Orchards was well stocked with fuel and candles and even had a wood fired stove that we used to cook on. The owner was in communication with us throughout and we managed to still have a lovely weekend. We would definitely come back and stay in what is a beautiful part of the country. We managed to sit out for a while when the storm abated to look at the stars as the view from the Orchards is spectacular.

  • "The property met all our expectations."

It had everything we needed, including a pizza wheel! We appreciated the torch as going along the road from the house to the main road in November without street lights would have been very difficult without this thoughtfully provided item. The house was very warm and welcoming after a day's walking with the boiler cupboard being a very useful drying space. Loved the open fire and having the logs on site with a "pay as you use" system meant no searching round for places that sold logs (and no putting mucky logs into our week old 71 plate car!) We had a very enjoyable stay and would recommend The Orchards without any hesitation.

  • "Absolutely loved our stay here."

The house and garden are lovely and the river walking behind the property is lovely. Plenty of room to roam around and explore. The children loved the walks and their dog was also very happy to go on adventures with the family. Wood burner is an absolute must in October. The weather wasn’t so kind but it didn’t matter at all. Would definitely recommend it as a venue for family gatherings.

The property

Tucked away in the rural village of Harbottle, amidst the tranquil Northumberland countryside, is this delightful little retreat, The Orchards.

Beautifully presented throughout, The Orchards makes a great escape for families groups of up to eight looking to break away from everyday life and see what this Northumberland location has to offer.

The front door leads into the hallway, with the sitting room on your left, housing ample seating for all to kick back beside the woodburning stove, or during the summer months throw open the French doors for a light and airy feel.

Turning right from the hallway there are four bedrooms, including a three king-size rooms, one of which benefits from an en-suite shower room, while there is also a lovely bunk room for children.

Discover the family bathroom, complete with bath and walk-in shower so you can decide how to prepare for the day.

Progress through to the kitchen/diner, boasting oak units and a granite worktop, along with a Stanley range cooker, induction hob and double electric oven, ensuring you have all the essentials for home-cooking.

The garden room can be accessed externally or through the dining room, providing a lovely spot for some quiet time away from the group, or relax at the patio furniture with a cold beverage as your canine companion roams the lawn.

Walkers will be delighted to know there is a scenic route right from the doorstep, taking you to the Drakestone, a massive sandstone block which rests high on a hill above Harbottle, before refuelling with some grub and a pint at the Star Inn, the local village pub which also serves as a community hub with a small shop and an excellent wood fired pizzeria in the courtyard.

Another favourite walk in the area is the River Alwin route, which starts in Alwinton, or stay in the village and explore the surrounding rolling hills and fantastic horse riding routes in the Coquet Valley.

For a bit of sightseeing, visit Alnwick Castle and Gardens, boasting 12 acres of meandering and magnificent gardens that are home to a grand cascade of water jets and the world’s largest Tai Haku Cherry Orchard, or venture over to the National Trust owned Craigside Hall near Rothbury, and the World Heritage Site that is Hadrian’s Wall.

The Orchards is a fantastic base for a relaxing retreat, whatever time of year.
