“The accommodation was very comfortable and surprisingly spacious for a place described as "compact".”

We needed to contact the owner as we couldn't get the central heating to work (the pressure was too low) but once we had it up and running, it was warm and cosy especially with the log fire burning in the grate. The cottage is literally a couple of minutes walk from the beach which was great for the dogs (though I note they are not allowed on that beach during the summer). Amble is a great place to stay, with plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs and 2 "history trails" to explore. ...

It's also near miles of gorgeous sandy beaches and dunes (which are dog friendly all year round) with loads of castles and other places of interest to explore nearby. Unfortunately, towards the end of our holiday, the government issued directives for pubs and cafes to close, and the National Trust and English Heritage also had to close their properties because of the coronavirus pandemic. This is going to be a tough time for many of the small local businesses but hopefully once this crisis is over, many people will choose to stay in the UK and visit places like Northumberland, which has so much to offer, rather than going abroad. We will certainly want to return! As other reviewers have noted, there are lots of steps to this first floor accommodation so not suitable for those with limited mobility. There is now a small table and chairs in the lounge so you have somewhere to sit to eat and some hooks on the back of the bedroom door. There is a window which won't close which makes one of the bathrooms a bit cold but doesn't affect the rest of the cottage and the other en suite bathroom is fine.

About the location

AMBLE

Warkworth 1 mile; Alnmouth 4 miles.

The bustling little seaport of Amble is situated at the mouth of the River Coquet and is an ideal place for exploring Northumberland. Historically a centre for boatbuilding, Amble offers a marina, a harbour, sandy beaches and coastal walks to the bird sanctuary at Hauxley and country park at Druridge Bay. Large fishing boats moor along the harbour wall and land a variety of fish, prawns, crabs and lobsters. There is a fish centre on the side of the harbour that is now primarily a shell fish hatchery to re-stock levels of lobster and other shell fish, this sells local fish and is open to the public. A mile south of Amble is Coquet Island, an RSPB reserve with a large population of terns, puffins and eider ducks and boat trips around the island can be arranged. The pretty coastal villages of Alnmouth and Craster and numerous superb beaches are only a short drive away, whilst picturesque Warkworth with its castle, charming Alnwick with its castle and award-winning gardens, and the National Trust’s Wallington Hall and Cragside are all within easy reach.
