  • “Julie was very friendly.”

Met us to explain everything and had lit the fires so the house was very warm and welcoming and also very clean. We had everything we needed for our stay and so did our dog Nell.

Met us to explain everything and had lit the fires so the house was very warm and welcoming and also very clean. We had everything we needed for our stay and so did our dog Nell. The house was in a great location for exploring the area and was very comfortable to return to at the end of the day. Quiet location, comfy beds so no trouble sleeping at night. Would definately recommend to anyone considering and we would also be more than happy to return in the future.

The property

Norham 3.2 miles.

Resting just within the Scottish Borders above the River Tweed within the small hamlet of Horndean is this quaint 18th century cottage, Bonalay Cottage, offering a tranquil, rural spot.

Suited to a group or a family of four, this two-bedroom abode contains a traditional and sweet interior style, as well as a great location within reach of Berwick-upon-Tweed and the River Tweed.

Enter through the pretty green front door and come into the country-style kitchen/diner, where a huge red brick fireplace holding a woodburning stove takes centre stage, warming the room wonderfully, amidst the fitted wood kitchen holding all the appliances you could need for a successful self-catered stay.

The dining table provides the perfect spot to gather around for a game of cards on a quiet evening, afterwards tucking into a delicious home-cooked meal.

A traditional coal fire can crackle away within the sitting room as you settle into one of the sofas and switch on the Smart TV for some light evening entertainment, surrounded by thoughtful and pretty décor.

Take pleasure in using the south-facing conservatory to sit with a morning coffee or tea, waking up with the rest of the world as you look out to the large enclosed garden, which is a welcome addition on warm summer days, you can spread out and sunbathe or watch the birds and wildlife.

Completing the ground floor is the bathroom which holds a bath and a power mains fed shower, so you can choose how best to get ready for the day ahead.

Head upstairs past the charming floral wallpaper to find the two bedrooms, including a king-size room and a double room, both enjoying lovely antique furnishings and continuing the quaint cottage styles, with the added benefit of sharing a separate dressing room, which holds a large wardrobe and a mirror, it offers a neat space to store your things and get dressed in the morning.

Cross the border into Norham to pick up any essentials or enjoy a hearty pub lunch, before exploring the ruins of Norham Castle and continuing with a riverside walk.

Head into Berwick-upon-Tweed and discover the winding Elizabethan walls built to keep invading Scots out, head to the beach for a day on the sands, or enjoy a variety of leisure activities on offer in the town.

Take a trip to Paxton House with plenty of grounds and walks for yourself and pets.

Bonalay Cottage makes for a great spot to enjoy a trip to the Scottish Borders.

About the location

NORHAM

Berwick-upon-Tweed 7 miles.

The historic village of Norham is most famous for its splendid Norman Castle ruins overlooking the river tweed, painted by Turner in 1845. The village has an excellent butcher and bakery, a Post Office, grocer, newsagent and two pubs, with an award-winning restaurant at the Wheatsheaf pub at nearby Swinton. Also nearby are two good restaurants in the town of Allanton which are great for fishing and shooting parties as well as the Cross Inn in Paxton. Berwick-upon-Tweed is just 7 miles away, at the northern tip of Northumberland’s beautiful Heritage Coast, boasting many restaurants, cafes, pubs and a nearby links golf course. The Scottish capital of Edinburgh or the town of Newcastle are just 40 minutes by train from Berwick. A superb base for exploring all North Northumberland has to offer.
