  • "Lovely cottage, perfect for a few days, peace and quiet"

    Reviewed by MaryFeb 2024

  • "If you are looking for a quiet and cosy retreat, then this is just the cottage for you."

Very quiet indeed, with around 3 vehicles a day driving past, 4 on Tuesdays when the bin lorry visits. The solid fuel central heating does take a little while to master, but it does make the whole place feel very warm and snug. Our stay coincided with Storm Babet and the cottage remained cosy and comfortable whilst the storm was raging outside. Tom, the owner came round to check that we were OK and that we had enough food. We were, and we did. But that was a very considerate gesture. Thank you Tom. Apart from just enjoying the tranquil surroundings, there's plenty of places to visit all within an easy drive. A walk along the beach from Low Newton to Dunstanburgh Castle was one of the highlights for us. Berwick-upon-Tweed is a lovely place, as is dog friendly Melrose with its Abbey and the fantastic Trimontium Museum. If you don't want to travel that far, then there are some stunning walks around Ford and Etal, just a few minutes away. We would recommend the delicious cheese scones at Boes cafe. All in all, a wonderful relaxing break.

  • "Enjoyed our stay here, very quiet location with good WiFi and large secure garden for the dog although the grass hasn’t been cut for a long time."

Personally think the cottage is due for a bit of TLC but if you want quiet and relaxed and don’t mind lighting the fire for the radiators it’s ideal if you want bright and airy and instant heat probably not.

  • "My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our week."

Apart from the kitchen being a little cramped, the cottage is very comfortable, well equipped, very tastefully furnished, and the dog could be safely left to run around outside. Lots of bird life, and very quiet and peaceful. We would certainly return.

Very much what we wanted, very rural but not far from a good pub that let dogs in,cottage owner very friendly, explained about the coal fire heating but I couldn't get a good fire on the go, wasn't a problem as there is storage radiators but the cottage was surprisingly quite warm, everything we expected was there and it is in a beautiful part of the country, have no complaints at all, don't expect a palace ,it is a nice cosy cottage on a working farm

  • "The cottage was lovely!"

Warm and well equipped. So dog friendly, I would love to return to the cottage because it was secluded while only being a 25 minute drive from larger towns. Only a few points regarding cleanliness, oven trays need replaced and under beds were very dusty but having said this I know the owner had recently had surgery and had to use a cleaning company. I would recommend this cottage, I stayed a week and could have happily stayed for two!

  • "We used the cottage as a base for walking on the coast and in the Cheviots and was a great location for both."

The cottage was in a lovely quiet rural area, surrounded by fields and open countryside. It was clean, comfortable and equipped with everything that we needed for our stay. There was a good sized, secure garden where we were able to let out our dog without fear of him escaping. Our hosts were friendly and welcoming, leaving us to enjoy our stay but on hand if there was anything that we needed to ask about.

  • "Cottage was OK, as described."

Had everything you needed. If visiting in winter you need to keep open fire going. Owner left Plenty of coal. Plenty to do in area, nice pub a mile away for food. Peaceful, no traffic Plenty of wildlife. Note owners retired from horse riding and carriage driving but 10 minutes driving Kimmerston Stables

Hi David, we're glad you enjoyed your stay and got home safe and well. Thank you very much also for your kind gift of wine. I'm sorry you felt the listing was not accurate but Sykes website merely says that the cottage is located on a farm specialising in Horse Riding and Carriage Driving and it is. As explained prior to your arrival though and as shown on our own web site we have had no option but to close to visiting customers because of the Pandemic due to the fact that Tom is immunocompromised due to having leukaemia and Susan is having chemotherapy for cancer treatment and which necessitates frequently attending hospital in Newcastle. We're delighted that you enjoyed riding at our recommended neighbours at Kimmerston. I've asked Sykes to clarify that cottage visitors are unable to book these facilities to remove any confustion. • "My son and I arrived at Flodden edge farm cottage on the 27th of November 2021."

The owner showed us inside, It was freezing with an antiquated system for heating and hot water involving getting buckets of coal every 2 hours from outside and building a big fire. It was like something from the 1970s. The place was not clean and the bathroom was a joke with a very old shower and a disabled seat on the wall. It is so BAD we have left after 2 nights. Worst place I've ever stayed in.

What a shame we had to discover you'd left only by reading this. You left without even locking the door and returning the key, nor did you inform Sykes. We met you a couple of miles away, because you didn't have directions and took you straight to the cottage. When we tried to talk through what you may need to know about the property, you said you didn't need to know anything and your son would figure things out. Your attention was then drawn to the laminate welcome pack. The next morning your son asked about the central heating and it turned out he'd not read the welcome pack with instructions and hadn't switched the heating pump or the hot water on. We offered to show him but yet again you were insistent he would figure it put. We said he'd not used the night grate nor filled it up with fuel and if he had any problem I'd come and show him. There are also 2 large night storage heaters that are permanently on. Our cottage is advertised as suitable for those with mobility issues and it has a purpose designed accessible shower and approved fold up seat for those may need it. the property was all cleaned and ready for your arrival. If you'd read our visitor's book you would have seen all comments are very positive. Property Owner
