The conviviality of the host, who went the extra mile to ensure our comfort and knowledge of the area and who was always accessible when we had any queries. We could not recommend her highly enough. The area in which the cottage is located, private and quiet and just across from the beautiful river, where there are benches to sit and watch the bird life and gorgeous walk along the river bank. The scenery is also very beautiful and very peaceful. There are plenty of coffee shops and restaurants also and nearby towns easily accessible. We also enjoyed the visits to the various abbeys and to historic venues like the home of Sir Walter Scott and Scott's View should really be enjoyed by all who visit this area. Floor's Castle, just on the doorstep was a delight to visit and having lunch on terrace of the walled gardens was just sublime. A fabulous place of various interests, especially to be there in Civic Week, where historic events, some going back 500 years, were available to locals and tourists alike. And also the Ridings. All in all, a most interesting and enjoyable and peaceful holiday that far exceeded our expectations.

About the location

Jedburgh 14 miles; Wooler 16 miles.

Kelso is a lovely tranquil Borders town at the meeting point of the Tweed and Teviot rivers, with a cobbled town square and streets, and an array of stunning Georgian buildings, and a wealth of gorgeous countryside around it. Take time out to visit Floors Castle, a very prominent Stately Home with restaurants and gardens, designed by William Adam. Also close by are Mellerstain House, Kelso Abbey and the Kelso races. Mellerstain House is a stunning example of Georgian architecture at its finest. Designed by the architect William Adam and his son Robert in 1725, it is the residence of the 13th Earl of Haddington. The house is located within 80 acres of luscious rolling parkland and is in walking distance of Smailholm Tower, the ancestral home of Sir Walter Scott. Great fishing can be enjoyed on the Teviot, Tweed and Jed rivers and there are many excellent golf courses to choose from. Watch the spectacular and historic Common Ridings, held at Hawick, Selkirk, Langholm, Lauder and others, with long histories. The Borders also offer some superb walking and cycling, be it on the coast, over the breathtaking hillsides or amongst the enchanting Border forests. The towns of Coldstream, Jedburgh, Kirk Yetholm and Wooler are just a short drive away and are a joy to explore at leisure.
