"A really lovely cottage - Beds were very comfortable, kitchen well appointed with everything we needed."
A lovely welcome basket was really appreciated and added a really personal touch. Perfectly situated to explore the area.
"Wonderful property, great location, comfortable and a real home from home."
We have booked to return in 2025.
Thank you for your feedback - we look forward to welcoming you back in 2025 ! Property Owner
"We ( 2 adults and 3 children) had a fabulous stay at this wonderful home from home."
The facilities were first class and the cottage was so comfortable. Every night my head hit the very comfortable pillows and drifted off for really good nights sleep. The children absolutely loved the attic room, just like their own little den, no problems going off to bed each night! Mike popped round to see if everything was okay and he’s such a nice man to talk to. We’d like to thank the owners for making our stay such a delight and the lovely welcome basket was a nice touch. We look forward to returning
Thank you - we do try to make the cottage welcoming for all guests and it is good to know that you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner
"This is the second time we have stayed here."
It is a super cottage, despite the best efforts of Storm Babette, we remained warm and cosy. It’s easy to go both inland and to the coast. Thankyou for the wonderful welcome pack.
"We had a great time at this property."
It was very clean and comfortable, and provided a lovely welcome pack which was much appreciated. We loved exploring the coastline especially St Abbs as recommended by the owners. Also fascinated by the local history particularly The Battle of Flodden Field. Many thanks.
"It is our home from home."
Lovely cottage in a perfect location. Can't rate highly enough !!!
"Had a lovely week with the grandkids, perfect location for, bamburgh castle, farn islands, Alnwick castle ect."
We even went up to Edinburgh for the day. There is a couple of pubs and a village shop just up the road.would definitely recommend to friends an family.
"My main reason for filling out this form is to propose that no Sykes Cottages should leave alcoholic drinks either as part of a welcoming gift or as in this case a bar full of drinks."
It did not affect us but if a recovering alcoholic used your facilities, I think you can understand that this could cause an unnecessarily difficult situation/
Thank you for your comment, as this is not something I had considered before, as most people comment positively about the welcome basket and facilities we provide. However, I can now act on this and hope that you enjoyed all other aspects of your stay. Property Owner
"The property is situated just outside Lowick and it is easy to visit places of interest."
The property is on a road and there is some road noise. Mobile signal is not good and it is necessary to go outside to get a connection. The facilities are sufficient although the dishwasher had packed up the week before our visit! We did find the sofas were very soft and not particularly comfortable for us. We did have a problem with lukewarm hot water and had to phone the owners, who were very helpful. As a result of the phone call we were able to sort out the issue. We can recommend the Black Bull pub in Lowick. A walk round the walls and battlements in Berwick should not be missed especially as long term parking is free.
"We had a fabulous stay."
The cottage was perfect size for us as a family of 5. A really great base for a great holiday.
"We thought that the only thing that was missing was a bread bin."
this was sorted after talking to the owner. Other than that, the holiday, and the cottage was superb.
"Home from home, with lots of thoughtful touches."
About a half-hour drive from hotspots around Alnwick and lovely empty roads so not a problem! Other attractions much closer. Had a lovely day with our young kids on the Ford & Etal railway and mill at the end, which is only 10 minutes away and much less busy. Thanks for a wonderful stay!
"The cottage was very well equipped, and the welcome pack was a nice touch."
It was ideal to use as a base for touring the surrounding areas.
"We spent a fabulous week at Barmoor Retreat, can't fault the cottage in any way extremely clean and in an ideal location to explore."
Sue and Dave were the perfect hosts, the welcome hamper was a nice touch Would highly recommend Barmoor to any intrepid explorers, already planning our next stay.
Thank you so much for your comments. We would love to welcome you back at any time. Property Owner
"Cottage was very comfortable and cosy especially the log burner."
Good location for seeing sites. the cottage was very well equipped it was like home from home.
Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased you were still able to come and that you enjoyed your week. Property Owner
"The property was absolutely spotless."
The kitchen was well stocked with everything you would need for cooking. The beds were comfortable. Linen spotless. The bathrooms were well equipped with towels etc. the outside areas, as there were 3 were also well equipped. There was a welcome pack waiting for us and also fresh flowers in the living room. Could find no faults with this accommodation and would certainly book again if ever in the area. Also situated conveniently for travelling around the area. Top marks for this accommodation.
"Another excellent stay, our second."
Very comfortable, good location for exploring north Northumberland and the Borders. Very friendly and helpful owners.
"Wonderful stay, fabulous place - we’ve stayed in a number of places in Northumberland and this is the best by far."
"Very good facilities and we thoroughly enjoyed our time at Barmoor retreat!"
"A really lovely and well-appointed property."
Everything we could possibly need was available. Handy for exploring beautiful Northumberland. Lovely welcome pack. Thanks very much to the owners.
"Brilliant cottage, great location, such a nice stay and a lovely welcome too."
"Barmoor retreat is a clean, stylish, comfortable home from home."
The owners obviously care about their guests. We had every need catered for and the lovely 'welcome basket' was much appreciated and enjoyed! I would highly recommend this property in a very beautiful corner of our island.
Thank you so much for your feedback. We do try to make everyone feel welcome and look forward to seeing you again. Property Owner
"The problem we had related to the spiral staircase to the third floor bedroom."
We are in our seventies and we found it a tricky ascent to negotiate that flight. Other than that, it was superb.
Thank you for your feedback which is always helpful. I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties accessing the attic bedroom, but there is a note on the listing letting potential visitors know about this. It states: The second floor twin bedroom is accessed via a wooden, open-tread spiral staircase, therefore this room may not be suitable for very young children and those with limited mobility. I will contact Sykes today to ask if they can make this information more prominent in the details so people are better informed. Thank you. Property Owner
"Very convenient to A1,local attractions and places of interest."
We found the owners very friendly and helpful . The welcome pack was very much appreciated. The accommodation lived up to our expectations.
"Would highly recommend a stay at Barmoor Retreat."
Excellent location for visiting the surrounding areas.Cottage is very comfortable and has everything you need and more. Nice surprise to find a welcome pack. Owner very pleasant and helpful. Excellent food at the Black Bull Inn. Would definitely return.
Many thanks for your feedback. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner
"Everything was super."
Beds comfy, facilities great. Nice and quiet (we only saw the neighbours once)... It is in a brilliant location for getting to Berwick-upon-Tweed, Lindesfarne and Bamburgh as well at Etal and Ford. Perfect for the 5 of us, a proper home from home. (Could do with a bigger TV though... )
"Another excellent cottage."
Everything we needed. Owner called to check everything was ok. No welcome pack. After a long journey it would have been nice to find a pint of milk in the fridge.
Thank you for your feedback. We do usually leave a welcome pack (including milk in the fridge) but we were away that Saturday and someone else did the change over for us. The welcome basket was obviously overlooked and I will make sure this doesn't happen again. Property Owner
"This is our second stay here during the past 12 months and we would certainly stay again."
Excellent location for our needs and the cottage has all the comforts and facilities we require.
"Whilst are week was not a holiday as we were visiting elderly parents who live nearby the cottage was just what we wanted."
Spacious, comfortable and all the facilities we needed. The owners responded promptly when we needed to check something with them and we would certainly stay here again.
"Dressing tables & larger mirrors in the bedrooms would have been useful."
"Lovely cottage that is well placed to explore the area, we have stayed before ..."
Lovely cottage that is well placed to explore the area, we have stayed before and would do again but it has moved out of our price range now
"So well-located for such a variety of places to enjoy: Holy Island, Bamburgh, Seahouses, Alnwick, Wooler, Kelso, Berwick, Ford, Etal, and Heatherslaw Mill - all in lovely rolling countryside with sudden spectacular views - and all within 30 minutes drive."
And coming back to that so-cosy kitchen! excellent wide parking in front of the cottage.
"Perfect base to explore the Northumberland coast."
Great hosts, who had thought of everything you may need
"We had a great fortnight at Barmoor."
The good weather meant we could make use of the barbeque and the large, well kept, garden. The owners were welcoming, as they were when we last visited in 2019. Lowick is a good base to explore Northumberland, including Lindisfarne, We found a hidden gem in Northumberland Zoo near Morpeth
"Very nice accommodation well set out."
Warm and cosy feel too the place, would recommend to everyone.good base for travel around area
"Very comfortable cottage and helpful owners"
"Lovely cottage clean and very welcoming great location anything you would need ..."
Lovely cottage clean and very welcoming great location anything you would need for a great stay in the cottage great facilities can’t wait to come back
"Lovely warm house with good facility."
"Everything was included for an enjoyable holiday."
The location was ideal for visiting the coast and castles. The Scottish border towns were all worth visiting with Eyemouth ,St Abbs and Berwick only 30 mins away. Two country pubs serving good meals in Lowick village.
"The cottage was clean and tidy in a lovely quiet area and is in an ideal location for lot’s of local tourist attractions even close enough for a day trip into Scotland."
"This is the third time we have visited this cottage over the last 6years overall we enjoyed our stay there was a couple of things that let it down for us this time."
Oven had been attempted to be cleaned but the white cleaning product hadn't been wiped off the inside of the oven meaning that we had to finish off cleaning it before we used it. Another thing to note on the oven was all the labelling of the settings had worn off meaning we had to find the instructions for the oven before we used it,which there was actually 2 different sets of instructions in 2 seperate drawers so first time using the oven what we had cooked wasn't even on the right setting. Maybe in the file left for the cottage they should leave the correct instructions as it was abit misleading having 2 different sets of instructions! The microwave needed cleaning also before we used it as other people hadn't wiped out their splattered food. The kitchen utensils were greasy and needed washing. Two days after we got there the oil ran out for the heating meaning over night we had no heating other than the log burner which was lucky as we had been out and bought some logs earlier in the day,the owner did come out to see what the issue was that night but was only on the following morning they learnt the oil had ran out and then we waited until 3pm for the tank to be filled again. He then came back out and got it running again. First time we stayed in the cottage in 2014(when there was different owners) there was a problem with the heating the owners came with extra logs immediately for us to make sure we had enough but this time this didn't happen. Overall we did enjoy the stay but various things let it down for us which will probably stop us returning in the future. The dealings with the owners were pleasant and he tried his best to help get things sorted out around being at work himself.
"Great location for touting the area Very cosy cottage The owners went out out ..."
Great location for touting the area Very cosy cottage The owners went out out of their way to ensure holiday went well cannot thank them enough - they were on hand and checked to make sure all went well
"The house is in a great village location with easy access to lots of places of interest."
The house itself is a good sized family home and very comfortable with safe back gardens. Lindisfarne is only a few miles away and well worth a visit, also Eyemouth and Kelso.
"The cottage was excellent, clean tidy comfortable everything you could ask for,the only problem was next door was having the drive cleared and laid to block paving;so every morning we were woken by "jack hammers or wacker plates "hammering away."
The drive to our cottage was partially blocked making it awkward to get on or off the drive. Our car was covered in sand and dust from the cutting of the blocks by the ever noisy cutting tool. But apart from the noise, dust, dirt and inconvenience of getting on and off the drive everything was just great.
"Had an excellent two weeks in Northumberland, the cottage had everything you could possibly think of needing to take with you and more."
The Barmoor is a lovely well maintained property near to Berwick and holy island but far enough away to have the peace of the countryside, the property could not be faulted at all, the hosts had thought of everything from additional kitchen items to board games and DVDs for the kids. we liked it so much we are going back in November.
"This is a great cottage in a very good area for visiting all tourist attractions, Alnwick Castle, Holy Island, Cragside, and many more places."
we had a wonderful week with wonderful weather.
"My two girlfriends and I stayed 15-22 June, and we couldn't have made a better choice."
One of the nicest cottages we have ever stayed in.
"We were a party of 4 all over 60 (one was 84 ) This was a very good holiday, we all thought the house was excellent, very comfortable."
"I had a wonderful holiday in Northumberland and using The Barmoor Retreat as a base was an inspired choice."
In easy reach of so many great places of interest both above and below the border. Coming back to the Barmoor after a hard day being a tourist was a pleasure. I am hoping to return and see more of the great variety of historical sites in this area and even visit some for a second time. Great holiday, great accomodation.
"First time using Sykes Cottages and was overwhelmed with how well equipped the cottage was."
Will be booking again through Sykes Cottages
"The cottage was more than we could have hoped for."
Clean, comfortable, warm and cosy, and very well equipped. The beds and bed linen were of a high standard, and the extra touches of umbrellas in the porch, a hot water bottle for each bed, and the lovely welcome pack of wine, oatcakes, cheeses and grapes were much appreciated. The owners were very kind and helpful. The area is great and location perfect for visiting Holy Island, Bamburgh, Alnwick and all other places of interest.
"A cosy cottage a real home from home."
A very nice festive welcome basket awaited us as did a ready to light log fire. We had everything we needed to prepare a full christmas dinner. Would highly recommend Barmore Retreat.
"We've been booking holiday cottages for years and this one was the best by far."
As for the area. We had a fantastic week exploring Northumberland and the Scottish borders. Edinburgh was an easy 1 hour 30 min drive along very quiet roads.
"Fabulous holiday home, spottless, comfortable, warm, peaceful and perfectly located to explore Northumberland."
Highly recommend this house and hosts very helpful. Loved welcome basket as nice to be thought of before you even arrive, definitely look to return one day.
"The cottage was very clean"
"We had a fabulous weeks break in this very comfortable, well equipped house."
From the lovely welcome basket to the very comfortable beds this holiday house exceeded our expectations . Very well located in Lowick, it is an easy drive to Holy Island, Alnwick,Seahouses,Bamburgh and many more. Highly recommended
"The water pressure in the shower was poor otherwise every thing else fine."
We would re book if we were in the area again.
"The cottage was very comfortable and the kitchen was very well equipped."
Lovely situation with mainly birdsong. Good location for exploring area. Only draw back was getting cars out onto road as was just round a blind corner....one of those mirrors opposite would be great if the neighbours would allow
"The cosy homely feel of the cottage was just what we needed as a group of ladies in need of a chilledout weekend retreat."
Excellent value for money. The personal touch from the owners popping in to see if we where ok was nice along with the wee bottle of wine and oatcakes. We loved the board games! The cottage had two lovely bright rooms and bathroom on the second floor and the attic room you needed not to have any difficulty with a narrow spiral staircase. I think it would also suit a small family of five or a small group. The only thing I would say is don’t use the postcode to navigate because it will send you in circles on the sat nav. The cottage sits just off the junction that takes you to Lowick village. Thank you Sue and Pete we had a lovely time .
"Leigh Family 22nd Dec - 28 Dec 2017 A lovely peaceful cottage which is very well equipped and capable of accommodating a large family."
On arriving we found everything ran smoothly and all the property facilities were well organised. The area has some beautiful surroundings; a short drive to Berwick. Will certainly be returning in 2018!
"Northumberland is a beautiful place to visit, the cottage was lovely an just secluded enough to be peaceful but close enough to local conveniences in Lowick or a little down the road in Wooler."
The rooms were nice and the facilities were more than adequate. No complaints, very clean and nicely kept.
"Good rural location yet with good access to the coast."
Excellent facilities; couldn't have asked for more. Very good wifi, too.
"There is a large walk in cupboard in the lounge that could easily be converted to a down stairs toilet as there isn't one!"
"Initially 3 of us had issues with the 'saving to favourites' part of the Sykes website, as did the other parties we were going with who were in another part of the uk and my wife who was at home, but after a skip chat we went for Sometimes when you leave a review you KNOW that it may give you a problem when you want to go back to that property, as your review may just be the one that makes a 'searcher' book the week you are after."
...well,I hope it does as the owners and property ARE a delight, and we would moe our week away just to make sure this property is free...yes, seriously. ! Everything about the property booked was excellent. From the porch ( for muddy shoes) to the front room with open fire, to the big kitchen...it was exactly as we had hoped for. We cannot think of anything that needed doing, replacing or changing about our 'home' for the week. It was of the highest maintenance, very very clean, warm, and a delight to use as a base for the week. Enough cutlery, pots, pans, plates, WINE GLASSES, beer glasses ( you know...the important stuff !!) and bedding...board games..books to read, maps of the area....a welcome basket AND small milk in the fridge......two showers and toilets, with everything in good working order...it really was just like being at home. Will we go back....OH YES !!! The owners were superb in all communication, and helped make our new baby's first ever holiday ....EASY !
"This was our second visit to Barmoor, and hopefully not the last."
A comfortable and well equipped cottage in a good location.
"This cottage was everything we wanted & more."
Located a short drive from the village but great for exploring the surrounding area. The owners were very friendly & helpful. The basket of goodies left for us was a lovely surprise & much appreciated. The cottage itself was extremely well presented & very comfortable & well equipped to make our stay memorable. Would definitely recommend this cottage to friends & anyone else
