  • "Sea Lily is a wonderful property."

Very cosy, clean and tidy and well-equipped. Even the knives were sharp which is unusual in a holiday cottage! I always take a sharp knife and a decent frying pay with me but the equipment at Sea Lily was excellent. The location is good too - it was easy to visit lots of attractions without too much time spent driving around. We live in Northumberland anyway so we did not have far to travel to the cottage and it provided a perfect base for a nice relaxing week away from home. We would definitely like to return some time.

The log burner, Netflix & Alexa were all much appreciated, as well as it being dog friendly. And we thought the price was reasonable - so many places are unaffordable nowadays. We’ve had a really lovely few days with our daughter - thank you.

The cottage was really quiet so we could easily relax. The cottage is close to many beautiful beaches but also close to Berwick so easy access to amenities. We loved the fact that the water in the cottage came from a bore hole so tasted as water should do. The owners were really helpful too. Would highly recommend .

  • "The cottage was lovely, and an ideal base in which to explore Northumberland and the Borders."

There was useful information available, including a list of "do nots" for dogs owners ( not available online) One requested that the dog does not use the garden as a toilet and I completely understand why ( the risk of spreading Toxocariasis) However I had not envisaged having to walk my dog at the beginning and end of each day, along the lane in front of the cottage, in the dark, even with the torch provided). I am aware of the importance of picking up waste and always carry dog poo bags.It was disappointing to find no "Welcome Pack " There are choices of "Free From" items available for guests who have food allergies or intolerances. It is such a lovely thoughtful treat after a long journey. For anyone without a dog the cottage is ideal, but it feels "dog tolerant" at best and not "dog friendly". If the information had been avaliable before booking, I would have made a different choice.

I only gave 4 stars because we were hoping the TV would be a smart free view one so that we could use various apps to stream more choices of programmes to watch in the cold, dark evenings. • "As we have come to expect from Northumberland the location was perfect."

The cottage was lovely, comfortable and well equipped (could do with a fly screen on the patio doors). We had read previous reviews and took bottled water, the supply is from a natural source and is very metallic. Our main criteria when booking is for a pet friendly property with an enclosed garden. We were very disappointed to find a long list of 'dog rules' which included allowing dogs in the garden but not to let them toilet. One of the reasons for having an enclosed garden is to be able to let our dog out freely in the early morning and at night. The owners really need to consider if they want to allow pets as at the moment the property is pet tolerant at best, certainly not pet friendly. We are always very mindful of leaving no trace of our dog being in a property, unfortunately were left feeling uncomfortable and not at all welcome. For that reason we would not book sea lily again.

The water supply is from a private bore hole, the water whilst having a mild metallic taste is perfectly safe to drink, we do however provide a water filter for use by visitors. Dogs are perfectly welcome, but we do have a few requests (not rules) of owners and there are reasons for these requests. While dogs are allowed on the garden, we kindly ask owners not to allow their dogs to use the garden as a toilet, dog faeces, even small traces can cause an infection known as Toxocariasis in humans, small children can be particularly vulnerable. We do have a significant number of families with young children staying at Sea Lily and we want them to be able to use the garden safely. With the cottage being adjacent to a farm there are plenty of tracks and country lanes with wide verges where dogs can be walked and toileted safely, the nearest being 50 meters from the main entrance door to the cottage. We are also conscious of other non-dog owner visitors to Sea Lily who may be allergic to dogs. Property Owner

The bathroom is large with a good shower. There is a range of leaflets and information about the cottage, local restaurants and attractions plus books, games and DVDs. The cottage is very close to many attractions and we had planned to visit many of these. Sadly we were only able to stay for two nights as I tested positive for COVID. The owners very kindly texted to wish me well. I’m sure we’ll be back.

Beautiful views from the cottage. Very peaceful. Great facilities with dishwasher, washing machine and Wi-Fi. • "We were quite impressed with the Northumberland area."

However, we were rather disappointed with the accommodation. We were also surprised to see the bookings were at 9.00am and 4.00pm. Quite often bookings are 10am and 3.00pm. The time to clean the property was rather excessive bearing in mind the next door cleaning was completed by 1.00pm. We were astonished to see no welcome pack to greet us. In the book of instructions the owner admitted this but stated that coffee, tea, sugar etc were provided. There were no such provisions to be found in the property. We tried to open the windows and patio doors which was almost impossible. We did manage to open a couple of them, but after having a struggle to close them again, we opted to keep them shut. There were no extra toilet rolls apart from the one currently in use. The lighting in the lounge was less than suitable for reading. The kettle in the kitchen was in desperate need of descaling. The shower had so little pressure that the water flowing from the head just dribbled on the rim of the bath, missing the victim by a foot or two!

The customer was contacted in advance of their visit and it was clearly explained why the access/exit times to the cottage had been changed to 4pm and 9am. The cleaners do have more work to do with a result of Covid-19 and they have more than one cottage to clean on a Saturday. Owners cannot stipulate to the cleaners exactly what time to clean a specific cottage and in some instances Sea Lily may be cleaned first, in the middle of or last on the cleaner’s busy Saturday schedule. The times are to help the cleaners with what is a busy schedule and ensure they have time to do the extra cleaning required given Covid-19. In the event the cleaning has been done earlier and we are aware of this, then we do contact the new visitors to let them know they can get in earlier. The window and patio doors have been checked and all open and close effectively. There are position locks on the windows when open to prevent them from fully opening and becoming a safety risk of someone falling out, especially the first floor windows. The shower has also been checked and there appears to be no issue with water pressure or flow rate. We did explain why we had stopped providing Welcome packs, which was mainly to do with food intolerances and allergies, but more recently with Covid-19. There was an additional toilet roll in the cupboard under the wash basin. The kettle is usually descaled between visits, the cleaners have been reminded to do this. We will also look to improve the lighting levels in the lounge. Property Owner

About the location

HOLY ISLAND

Berwick-upon-Tweed 14 miles; Bamburgh 16miles; Seahouses 18 miles

Holy Island is home to Lindisfarne Priory, one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Anglo Saxon England. The monastery was founded in AD 635 by St Aiden, but the island is more famously associated with St Cuthbert whose remains were carried by monks to Durham, and there they still remain. The island is now a popular tourist attraction with many visitors making a pilgrimage to the priory or following in the footsteps of the monks along St Cuthbert’s Way. Situated in the heart of the Heritage Coastline, the exciting journey to Holy Island begins with the essential check of the tides, the island is accessed via a long causeway which is impassable once the tide comes in. There is ample central parking and a short stroll will take you to the priory. The village itself has quaint tea rooms and pubs and a museum detailing the island’s interesting history. Those who enjoy the great outdoors will be delighted with the Northumberland Coastal Path, which runs through Beal just two miles inland and onwards down the Heritage Coast, offering stunning scenery along the way. Holy Island is within easy reach of both St Oswald's Way and St Cuthbert's Way and there are some great birdwatching sites nearby. Northumberland’s beautiful coastline, Alnwick Castle and Gardens, the Cheviots and the fascinating border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, are all only a short drive away. The pretty village of Ford with its castle and craft shops is 13 miles away, part of the Ford and Etal Estate which has facilities for cycling and fishing, as well as a mini railway – ideal for all the family. There are also excellent golfing opportunities, with eight golf courses within 20 miles of Holy Island. A superb base for exploring all that the region has to offer.
