  • "It has been an absolute pleasure to stay at The Granary."

Chrissie and Gavin welcomed us warmly, gave us local recommendations and tips, but did not intrude in any way. You wouldnt know they live next door! Their cottage is an absolute credit to them. Cosily furnished, well equipped, with the added bonuses of a conservatory and garden from which to gaze peacefully at the wonderful scenery and a log burner for chillier nights. The only noise you can hear is the birdsong. The cottage is ideally situated for Durham (use the Park & Ride which is excellent), Barnard Castle, Bowes Museum, Beamish Country Living Museum and Locomotion at Shildon. Lanchester itself has all the local amenities you need, including Ravellos excellent Italian restaurant, with a choice of larger supermarkets within easy driving distance. Once again, Sykes has a real gem on offer. We hope to visit again and cannot recommend this cottage highly enough

We had a very warm welcome from the owners Chrissie and Gavin who live next door. We found the cottage very comfortable and well equipped with quality furnishings, bedding etc. The Granary is in a lovely quiet location with many places to visit within easy reach. There are great views from every window. We particularly enjoyed sitting in the garden and conservatory watching the antics of the sheep in the adjoining field and the wide variety of birds visiting the bird table and garden. We were sad to leave but would definitely love to return.

The owners are on hand for any issues and very friendly and really helpful. The cottage is extremely well equipped with everything you could require and more. The garden is great to sit out in, enjoying the views and listening the array of birds in the area and of course the neighbouring sheep. I would say though that whilst WiFi is available, it is serviced from satellite in the owners property so is only really available in the kitchen of family may be advisable to take a WiFi dongle with you with a data package especially if you have WiFi mad kids. There is really good data connection on EE powered networks. Certainly enjoyed our stay and will return hopefully in the future

It was very clean, quiet and peaceful. The cottage was very well equipped and was just like being at home but in a much more beautiful setting. The weather wasn't with us so we missed the "dark sky" experience but we did enjoy watching a wide variety of birds from the conservatory each day.

. Both Chrissy & Gavin who live next door were very informative about the area, and although they live next door they do not impose on you. We were so lucky with the weather, glorious sunshine for most of the week. It was lovely to sit in the garden looking out to lovely green fields and hearing the sheep in the background. 1 Point I would point out is that although there is a washing machine & pegs (In the draw in the front porch) their is NO washing line (Although Chrissy did say we could use there's) Perhaps they could consider putting a rotary clothes line in the cottages back garden Would we return th The Granary, Absolutely

Visited the week before the second lockdown. Felt very safe. Cottage was cleaned to a very high standard. The cottage had everything we needed, the kitchen was very well equipped, lovely set of saucepans. Owners were lovely although attached to them they do not bother you and are very friendly and welcoming. Cottage is very warm and cosy and owners can supply a large basket of wood for a very small charge. I hope to return soon if they will have us back.

Well equipped (loved the mugs) and clean. The owner very welcoming and helpful. Views from the windows (especially with the sun rise) almost breath-taking. Kids loved the horse in the field. It is in a good proximity to many interesting places. I would not recommend Beamish Museum during COVID-19 restrictions unless you have already purchased a yearly pass and are revisiting. Durham is a stunning place to visit and so are few castles and abbeys from English Heritage in the area. Overall we had fabulous time and will be rebooking the cottage in the near future.

And if you are traveling with little one/s - the farm animals will be great attractions! The sea is not too far - neither are the hilly terrain of the Pennines. A great place to relax. The cottage was cozy and comfortable during the inclement weather and cool when warm. The sun room has a wonderful view of the pasture and hills which are dotted with sheep and cattle making our walks interesting and fun. The bed is great for the back and the water pressure is good for hot showers. A car is essential however many interesting places to visit close by. Our hosts were a wealth of information for places to shop and eat out. The site pictures do not do the cottage justice. We hope to return for another long stay.

The pictures were very minimalist and more internal views would be helpful. The owner was lovely and very helpful. The only negative comment is the driveway is very potholed, some TLC needed.I find that there is usually insufficient info on fridge and freezer capacity on most cottage websites. • "We loved the peace and tranquility of The Granary, a complete world away from normal hectic life."

The children loved the owners' animals and all the things to do in the area. Our thanks to the owners for making us so welcome and looking after us during our stay. We hope to go back next year, this time for 2 weeks!

  • "A very nice cottage with very friendly owners situated next door."

We always had plenty of firewood, that the owner chopped for us. A good situation, very quiet and peaceful with the village only a two-minute drive. Highly recommended to anyone who is thinking about staying there.

  • "The hosts were welcoming and friendly."

Nothing was too much trouble for them. The cottage was a true home from home. The hosts went to the effort of putting up a Christmas tree and decorations to ensure that our Christmas in England was a warm and homely one. I could quite easily live there full time! Full marks to a cottage (and hosts) that I would happily recommend to anyone.

  • "An immensely kind and thoughtful welcome."

The hosts are always very helpful. This was in the middle of a cold February and a log fire had been laid and the cottage was already warm when we arrived. The cottage is very well stocked with all the necessities for a comfotable and happy stay and, while retaining a traditonal feel, is up to date with all its equipment and decor. There are lovely views from most windows and a very nice conservatory(with heating!). The property is quiet and secluded yet within an easy drive of good pubs and many local attractions. There is plenty of literature available if you don't know the area.

About the location

Durham 8 miles; Newcastle 14 miles.

Set in the beautiful countryside of County Durham, approximately eight miles to the west of the historic City of Durham itself, is the village of Lanchester. The village took its name from the Roman fort of Longovicium situated half a mile south-west of Lanchester. Today, the Roman connection is reflected in the many Northumbrian tourist attractions along Hadrian’s Wall. Evidence of the Roman occupation in Lanchester is strong - stones from the original fort are incorporated into both local farm buildings and Lanchester’s attractive Church of All Saints, dating from Norman times. Now a thriving and substantial village, Lanchester has a good range of shops, pubs and restaurants. The surrounding countryside is superb for walking - the Lanchester Valley Walk runs the course of a disused railway line from Consett to Durham and is excellent for walkers or cyclists. With Durham City just 8 miles away, and Newcastle just 14 miles, there are many fantastic shopping opportunities within easy reach. An excellent base for Weardale and Teesdale, Cumbria and The Pennines, not to mention the historic Roman Wall Country together with the fabulous beaches and castles of the North Sea Coastline.
