“The cottage was very comfortable and clean.”

It had the facilities we required and the views from every window were fabulous. We were close enough to Lanchester and Durham to enjoy everything they had to offer whilst remote enough to enjoy open countryside. The owners were very friendly and hospitable. Lovely cottage, highly recommended.

Very nice couple that own the cottage and made our stay comfortable. They told us of lots of things to do around the area which was extremely helpful. The cottage was well equipped, clean, comfortable and we found it a lovely place to unwind. Perfectly situated with beautiful views from every window. A real gem.

The house was spotless and the views were spectacular (well, you sort of expect that when you are so close to the Pennines!) . If anyone is looking for a holiday in a rural setting - in a lovely cottage with all modern facilities - this is the place. And if you are traveling with little one/s - the farm animals will be great attractions! The sea is not too far - neither are the hilly terrain of the Pennines. A great place to relax. And both Chrissie and Gavin go the extra mile to make your stay memorable.

“Our month stay at the Granary was truly special.”

The cottage was cozy and comfortable during the inclement weather and cool when warm. The sun room has a wonderful view of the pasture and hills which are dotted with sheep and cattle making our walks interesting and fun. The bed is great for the back and the water pressure is good for hot showers. A car is essential however many interesting places to visit close by. Our hosts were a wealth of information for places to shop and eat out. The site pictures do not do the cottage justice. We hope to return for another long stay.

“Excellent base for the area.”

Beautiful cottage, beautiful views. Bit of a bumpy track to get in, but stick to the side and you’ll avoid the bumps. Beamish well worth a visit.

It is a lovely, clean, well presented, well equipped and very comfortable cottage in the middle of nowhere. Our idea of heaven! The owners are very friendly but leave you alone unless you ask for their input. Nothing negative to say. We'll definitely book again next year.

“The pictures on the website DO NOT give the true picture about the cottage.”

I had reservations when I booked it but as soon as you walk in, it was instantly homely and comfortable. There are lovely rural views across fields from EVERY room. The pictures were very minimalist and more internal views would be helpful.The owner was lovely and very helpful.The only negative comment is the driveway is very potholed, some TLC needed.I find that there is usually insufficient info on fridge and freezer capacity on most cottage websites. A picture of them would be helpful and also of the shower cubicle. This cottage has an awesome, large cubicle.We had a great time at this cottage and were very sad to leave, would stay again

The cottage was everything we expected - warm. cosy, comfortable, properly equipped, clean and roomy. It was within reach of all we wanted to do ie visit Durham, Gateshead, Beamish and allowed us the relaxing time we needed. Next time we visit the area we will be checking availability of the cottage first

“This is a beautiful cottage - extremely well furnished and equipped situated in jaw droppingly gorgeous countryside.”

The owners are very friendly but kept out of the way. Only very slight negatives are that you must have a car as nothing in walking distance and also, although stated as dog friendly, the owner's sheep are in fields all around the property and come right up to fence line with just stockproof mesh between the garden and them! My dog would have easily have got through!

“Blissfully comfortable”

The cottage was blissfully comfortable, quiet, relaxing and spotlessly clean. The cottage was stocked with everything we could need for a family of 3 for a week, including washing machine, dishwasher, wi-fi and crockery. The owners live in the cottage next door but are in no way intrusive - they are very friendly and welcoming and are on-tap if anything is needed. It is also a great location - very quiet with fantastic views but with easy access of many family friendly activites. This week we have; visited Beamish Museum (twice), Gibside (National Trust property and gardens), Durham, Newcastle, Druridge Bay (beautiful, clean, quiet beach) and had a boat ride on the Tyne. We have had a wonderful week and will definitely stay at Granary Cottage again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Have stayed in this idealic cottage several times and will definetely return. Owners so friendly and there is loads to do in the area.Cottage is so comfortable, we always spend a day lazing and enjoying it and the scenery.

By far the best equipped place we have ever stayed. Very friendly owners who will help and advise you if you need it. A great base to explore Couny Durham or further if you choose. My family highly recommends a visit to Beamish Museum and a trip up to Bamburgh castle.

a lovely week of mixed warm and cold front weather offering atmospheric views. Our daughter ran the Great North Half Marathon and raised several thousand pounds for the National Society for autism, she's a Specialist Nurse. Hurray !

“Very relaxing & friendly.”

A lovely clean and homily cottage in a lovely quiet location, with great views. Well equipped with a log fire. Little touches like having logs and rolled up paper available for the fire made all the difference. Would recommend and will probably be back ourselves one day.

“Superb. Much more than expected”

It was a joy to get 'home' to this beautiful cottage and its surroundings after long days out and about. Breakfast in the conservatory was a pleasure watching the birds and horses; but the evenings relaxing were the best. Myself and two friends had promised ourselves trips up to the local, or out for a meal each night, but the cottage was so cosy and comfortable, we didn't want to move - so just made our own meals in the fantastic kitchen - which had everything, and spent enjoyable evenings in the delightful sitting room watching TV, reading, writing or talking. So much thought has gone into the comfort of the visitors, that we couldn't fault a thing. Even hot water bottles in the superb large bedrooms and plenty of books for the adults and games for the children. As for the delightful owners - what can we say ? Thank you for the greeting on arrival, the bowl of fresh eggs in the kitchen. Your kindness and help throughout the week. We'll be back. Thats for sure !!

“Home from home in a great location”

We were made to feel very welcome, but at the same time the owners were not a bit intrusive whilst being there if needed. The cottage is very comfortable and well appointed. Nothing was missing and even the TV had a larger screen than usual with full freeview. The location is quiet without being isolated and there are many places to visit at all points of the compass. It is ideal for visiting Durham which we needed for our son's graduation day. Chrissie and Gavin have succeeded in making this a real home from home and we really look forward to coming again.

“friendly comfort”

A very well appointed house both comfortable and welcoming as were the owners. We hope to return and will recommend to family and friends wholeheartedly. Area has many different activities and interests available and so should suit everyone at any age.Horses, ponies & chickens endearing!

“Cosy, comfortable and welcoming cottage near Durham”

Very warm welcome from the adjacent owner, but not intrusive. Lovely house, very well equipped and clean. Large kitchen with dining area. Fantastic open fire with a constant, plentiful supply of logs. Could have spent the week indoors doing jigsaws and playing games, but there was lots to explore in the area. Lanchester had sufficient shops for us, plus a good Italian restaurant. Durham within easy reach. Well positioned for exploring Northumberland - Hadrian's wall, Killhope Lead mines & Souter lighthouse were all excellent. Would definitely stay again. Only drawback (minr) was the need to drive everywhere.

Converted from an old cow byre, The Granary is comfortably furnished offering visitors a warm and relaxing base from which to explore not only County Durham, but North Yorkshire, Cumbria, Northumbria, Roman Wall Country and the Lake District.

The sitting room offers panoramic, rural views from three sides with a south-facing conservatory to the rear, making the most of this peaceful location.

The historic city of Durham is just 11 miles away, and within comfortable driving distance are the Wear Valley, Teesdale, Northumberland, The Metro Centre, Beamish Museum and Shildon Railway Museum.

The Durham Cricket Ground at The Riverside, which features international matches, is about 30 minutes' drive away.

Set in the beautiful countryside of County Durham, approximately eight miles to the west of the historic City of Durham itself, is the village of Lanchester. The village took its name from the Roman fort of Longovicium situated half a mile south-west of Lanchester. Today, the Roman connection is reflected in the many Northumbrian tourist attractions along Hadrian’s Wall. Evidence of the Roman occupation in Lanchester is strong - stones from the original fort are incorporated into both local farm buildings and Lanchester’s attractive Church of All Saints, dating from Norman times. Now a thriving and substantial village, Lanchester has a good range of shops, pubs and restaurants. The surrounding countryside is superb for walking - the Lanchester Valley Walk runs the course of a disused railway line from Consett to Durham and is excellent for walkers or cyclists. With Durham City just 8 miles away, and Newcastle just 14 miles, there are many fantastic shopping opportunities within easy reach. An excellent base for Weardale and Teesdale, Cumbria and The Pennines, not to mention the historic Roman Wall Country together with the fabulous beaches and castles of the North Sea Coastline.
