This didn't prevent us from sightseeing due to the main road being at the end of the drive. We enjoyed the Granary for its cleanliness, comfort, fully working amineties and of course the great location. "Waking up to the view of the countryside, covered in snow, as the sun rose glowing over the far hills was an added bonus and being toasty warm says it all". The Cottage is in easy reach to many major tourist attractions either historical, for a fun beach day or just exploring the beautiful surrounding landscape.

Birdwatching in the comfort of the conservatory a morning pastime - a pair of woodpeckers regular visitors and a squirrel running along the drystone wall a delight to see. Many visitor attractions within a short driving distance. The Knitsley Farm Shop def. not to be missed (brownies to die for!) Waldridge Fell a great place for walkers (a dog's delight) and, for those who appreciate art, the gallery at Spennymore houses the Norman Cornish room. The Rock brothers superb landscapes and seascapes are also on display as well as work by many other wonderful artists. Doggie walks galore and no shortage of dog friendly eating establishments. The Woodlands Tearooms and Nursery at Edmondsley offers a special canine menu which includes doggie ice-cream!!! Not for our Romanian rescue tho'! ! It is roomy and very clean. We particularly enjoyed the conservatory and the views and the children loved playing in the garden. It is the pleasure of being in a farm with all the modern confort. The bathroom is high standard and even the wifi (which was said to be poor) was good enough downstairs to allow me having a zoom meeting. The owners are very nice, we felt really welcomed (and appreciated the welcome pack, thank you!!) Among the things we did from the cottage: visiting the beautiful town of Durham and renting a boat there for a little cruise on the river, going to Beamish, visiting National Trust properties, enjoying the coast: we had the great surprise to see dolphins from Durham coast, it was amazing!

Cosily furnished, well equipped, with the added bonuses of a conservatory and garden from which to gaze peacefully at the wonderful scenery and a log burner for chillier nights. The only noise you can hear is the birdsong. The cottage is ideally situated for Durham (use the Park & Ride which is excellent), Barnard Castle, Bowes Museum, Beamish Country Living Museum and Locomotion at Shildon. We were so lucky with the weather, glorious sunshine for most of the week. It was lovely to sit in the garden looking out to lovely green fields and hearing the sheep in the background. 1 Point I would point out is that although there is a washing machine & pegs (In the draw in the front porch) their is NO washing line (Although Chrissy did say we could use there's) Perhaps they could consider putting a rotary clothes line in the cottages back garden Would we return th The Granary, Absolutely

About the location

LANCHESTER

Durham 8 miles; Newcastle 14 miles.

Set in the beautiful countryside of County Durham, approximately eight miles to the west of the historic City of Durham itself, is the village of Lanchester. The village took its name from the Roman fort of Longovicium situated half a mile south-west of Lanchester. Today, the Roman connection is reflected in the many Northumbrian tourist attractions along Hadrian’s Wall. Evidence of the Roman occupation in Lanchester is strong - stones from the original fort are incorporated into both local farm buildings and Lanchester’s attractive Church of All Saints, dating from Norman times. Now a thriving and substantial village, Lanchester has a good range of shops, pubs and restaurants. The surrounding countryside is superb for walking - the Lanchester Valley Walk runs the course of a disused railway line from Consett to Durham and is excellent for walkers or cyclists. With Durham City just 8 miles away, and Newcastle just 14 miles, there are many fantastic shopping opportunities within easy reach. An excellent base for Weardale and Teesdale, Cumbria and The Pennines, not to mention the historic Roman Wall Country together with the fabulous beaches and castles of the North Sea Coastline.
