The welcome gifts were much appreciated, especially the fresh eggs. The owners were welcoming and the alpacas were friendly and enjoyed the apples we gave them. Thank you for a lovely, relaxing holiday in Beautiful countryside
-
"Great property and very well managed."
We had a busy week as the area has so much to offer, so very nice to use the hot tub in the evenings.
-
"The Granary is a great place to stay."
The whole place has been decorated to a high standard with high end appliances throughout. Would definitely recommend a stay here.
-
"Excellent property well presented and cared for."
Well equipped with extra touches like towels for the hot tub and a welcome pack. Highly recommend. Easy to find quiet location.
-
"Another absolutely fabulous week at the Granary!"
The hosts are so helpful and everything was perfect from start to finish.
-
"Our 2nd visit to the area, 1st stay at The Granary."
What a beautiful farmhouse. Clean, cosy, well equipped and very tastefully decorated. Unlimited logs, lovely hot tub, enclosed garden and walks galore on the doorstep. Hosts are fabulous. A very relaxed week. We will definitely return. Thanks for a wonderful stay x.
-
"Lovely relaxed stay, just what the family needed."
3 double bedrooms are hard to find and the fact they all had en suites sealed the deal for us! The enclosed garden was perfect for our dog and meant we could let her our to the toilet without having to stand on guard. Tracey came over to welcome us which was lovely! The kitchen was well equipped with everything anyone could need. They even provided dog bowls! The hot tub was perfect and I really liked that we could replenish wood for the fire without additional charge. Lastly, the alpacas and horses kept my toddler well entertained. The animals are clearly looked after and alpacas are so friendly that you could feed them!
-
"The cottage, was fabulous, very spacious, great location and well laid out."
The kitchen was one of the best equipped that we have stayed in. Would happily stay again if we are vacationing in the area again.
-
"Excellently presented holiday cottage with lots of period feature."
Very spacious accommodation, clean and well equipped. Great rural location with easy access to Durham. We enjoyed the large private hot tub and local walks.
-
"Fabulous place to stay."
Very central to lots of interesting places the North East has to offer. Can’t wait to go back and visit.
-
"Lovely accommodation in nice peaceful location with local services and easy access to Durham and surrounding area."
-
"The property is really lovely and we will definitely return."
It’s very hard to fault anything, so these are very picky feedback suggestions rather than complaints. Improvements could be: a better reading lamp in the lounge, the one there isn’t bright enough spatulas in kitchen need looking at Every thing else
-
"Possibly the most comfortable place we have ever stayed in!"
Everything we wanted and more.
-
"The whole property was excellent."
Everything you could ask for. Will definitely recommend to family and friends.
-
"The granary is a superb, immaculately clean furnished house 3large bedrooms all ensuite, spacious garden plus large hot tub."
Large parking area at the front.approx 50 metres away there's Al pacas in the field where you can see for miles over the fields plenty of walks it's so peaceful and the air is so clean. Both the downstairs lounge and the kitchen are enormous and you will want for nothing. Second time here for us a brilliant week.
-
"Both the hosts and the accommodation can only be described as perfection."
Absolutely faultless.
-
"Can't find anything to say but perfect"
-
"This is a fantastic place to stay, the facilities at The Granary are superb."
From walking into the property we were in awe at the way it had been converted. Some of the buildings old features had been kept, which added to the character and the space it had meant we weren’t on top of each other all the time. All three bedrooms are also spacious and have en-suite bathrooms, two with enclosures and one with a shower over bath. The kitchen / dining room is open plan and is well equipped and the livingroom again is roomy and has games for family nights. The owners had left welcome gifts (chocolates, Prosecco and even milk) so you are able to start your stay in style or at least a cuppa!! The garden is completely enclosed, therefore suitable for children and animals and the addition of a hot tub (which we used daily!!) made for a really relaxing stay. The area itself is beautiful, nice, quiet and peaceful and surprisingly close to other towns and villages in the area. Just outside the door there are excellent views and there are Alpacas and horses which are friendly and enjoy a feed. There are other conversions on the site of the original farm and each one is secluded. All in all, congratulations to John, Tracey and Chris on having such a wonderful site and the ability to put such thought and effort into their properties. We’d love to come back at some point for another break and enjoy the hospitality again. Many, many thanks to you.

"We had a lovely week."
The property is spacious and immaculately clean. The owners have made a real effort to ensure that everything you could possibly need is available. I would highly recommend.
-
"The Granary was excellent!"
It was spotlessly clean, very roomy and beautifully furnished. The garden was spacious and the hot tub lovely! There were nice walks nearby and plenty of great places to visit nearby. Durham and Seaham are well worth a visit. Tracey, the owner was fast in her communications and her and John her husband gave us a nice welcome without being intrusive. We had to arrive a couple of days late due to an unavoidable event and they were very accommodating. We were 2 couples and there was plenty of space. We would go back. It's the nicest holiday accommodation we have stayed in in England and I would highly recommend.
-
"A beautiful immaculate property, in a lovely location."
Modern but with original features making the house very quirky. Large enclosed garden with hot tub, & walks into the country direct from the house. The owners are very friendly & provided everything you needed plus some very welcome extras! I would definitely recommend & hope to go back again next year.
-
"We had a wonderful time at The Granary with everything very much as advertised."
The house has pretty much everything you could need for a self catering holiday. It was clean and fresh throughout with comfortable beds for a good night's sleep. Hot tub was relaxing after a day of walking and sight seeing. The surroundings were peaceful despite being only a short drive into Durham. We would definitely consider staying again if we return to the area. The garden is also dog friendly being fully enclosed and inside had dog bowls and blanket in case they were forgotten!
-
"The property was stunning, more so than the pictures show."
Immaculate and spotlessly clean. All fixtures and fittings to a high standard. The owners very helpful and friendly who provided additional extra touches that made for a lovely welcome to the property.
-
"This is a top rate holiday cottage."
We all loved staying there and look forward to returning.

-
"Lovely property, nice quiet location, so good it’s our second visit, would definitely recommend."
-
"The Granary exceeded expectations!"
Finished to a very high standard. The cottage is like a home from home and would recommend to anyone, great value when booking in a larger group as well. We made use of the hot tub and then getting into our pjs to sit around the log burner playing games, we took our own but a variety of games were provided. We had fun visiting the Alpacas too! Lots of cooking equipment to use (we were able to make a Sunday roast)
-
"This property is home from home in a brilliant location"
-
"This is an outstanding property."
It manages to be classy and homely which is a rare combination. The facilities are excellent. The furniture is quirky and gorgeous. I love the embroidered chairs ! 3 big rooms all with en-suite is a fabulous offer. Very comfy beds, quiet. The hosts are on hand but unobtrusive. It's a great dog-friendly place with an enclosed garden, lovely and handy very local walks on the doorstep. Very friendly local pub who just adored our dog. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again or to recommend to others.
-
"Beautiful cottage."
Very clean, comfortable and fully equipped with everything you could need. Very spacious rooms and three en-suite bedrooms, all furnished to a high standard. Can't fault it. Immediate surroundings close to the cottage were very impressive and quiet. Not a lot in the village, although we had a couple of great meals at the Travellers Rest pub. Very much enjoyed our stay, thank you.
-
"Lovely house Feeding the alpacas brought a smile to our faces"
-
"A beautiful, comfortable and well-equipped property."
It surpassed our expectations, more than meeting the needs of a party of five adults and two dogs. We appreciated the friendly welcome, the pack of goodies and ethical choices. Walks from the door into the woods and friendly alpacas were a delight. It’s a quick and easy journey to Durham from the park and ride. The local pub/restaurant is excellent and recommended. A fabulous stay.
-
"Superb location."
Everything in one place. 10 mins away from Durham lots of lovely walks nearby. Clean tidy and a warm welcome from the owner.
-
"Very nice cottage."

"The Granary is beautifully appointed, equipped and very comfortable, and certainly didn't disappoint in any way."
The beds were the best we had slept in at a holiday cottage! The chocolates, Prosecco, milk and eggs on arrival were very welcome. Eggs were wonderful. My grandchildren loved feeding the alpacas and horses morning and evening. Tracey and John were delightful hosts. We won't hesitate to return and can't recommend highly enough.
-
"Absolutely wonderful - an immaculate property ideally placed for lots of great sightseeing."
We can’t wait to come back.
-
"Thoroughly enjoyed our week at The Granary."
The property was in a great location, surrounded by open countryside, beautifully clean and very comfortable. The hot tub was an added bonus and we much appreciated the welcome goodies provided by the owners on our arrival.
-
"What a fabulous house."
So comfortable, well equipped and homely. We loved the hot tub which was great after a long day exploring. We can highly recommend the little Chinese takeaway in the village. Thank you so much for the Prosecco and the chocolates also the eggs and milk. There are some great walks from the house itself so you don't have to drive anywhere if you don't want to and the alpacas are very entertaining! We can highly recommend this beautiful house
-
"Just one word “FABULOUS”"
-
"What a fantastic stay at The Granary, we had an absolutely wonderful time."
Lovely comfy mattresses, great showers, a perfectly equipped kitchen, and impeccably clean everywhere. Hot tub was hot on our arrival and logs ready for the stove in the lounge. The area is very peaceful and calm, with pleasant walks and a local shop down the road open til 10pm. Our hosts were incredibly welcoming and accommodating, we can't thank them enough. We definitely recommend staying at The Granary, 5 stars!
-
"Amazing accommodation, every detail thought about, very clean and tidy."
Great location for Durham and Newcastle. Really secure garden for dogs. Nice quiet area with two pubs in walking distance. Hope to visit again some time.
-
"We had a lovely stay here and are looking to book up again for next year already."
Everything was clean and tidy and the house was stunning. We had a great level of privacy and there was someone on hand for if/when we needed them. Also, even though we didn't get to see the dogs we loved the alpacas and horses, we just didn't want to come home!! Thank you so much :)
-
"Beautiful cottage excellent setting"
-
"We had a wonderful 2 night stay and are rebooking for November."

Owners very friendly, will definitely be a returning guest
-
"Such a lovely holiday home with everything you need."
We had a lovely Christmas week complete with beautiful decorations. Wood fired hot tub was a bonus enjoyed by all! Super local walks and great enclosed garden for our dogs. Durham is so near with some great restaurants and beautiful walks along the river.
-
"Lovely place would recommend it xx"
-
"Our stay at The Granary was everything we expected and more!"
The house is fully equipped with everything you’d need, and it was gorgeous! The owners were lovely and welcoming, and the surrounding areas were beautiful. We loved the family of alpacas which are right next to the house! The house comes with recommendations for the surrounding area which is so helpful if you aren’t local. Will definitely be booking again. Thank you so much for our stay.
-
"Excellent property, first impressions when you open the main door - wow."
3 large en suite bedrooms, large kitchen diner and lounge. Welcome choccies and fizz were much appreciated. Good location for visiting both the coast (Seaham and Whitley Bay) and inland attractions like Beamish museum.
-
"We had a lovely week at the Granary."
The accommodation was very clean & comfortable. We were a party of four and everyone slept well on the super king-size beds. There was everything you needed for self catering loads of pans, dishes, utensils etc. Tracey made us very welcome and we all appreciated the Prosecco, chocolates & milk for a cuppa on arrival. Our dogs had a great time too & enjoyed the enclosed garden and handy walks straight from the barn. If you visit don't forget to meet the alpacas! We hope to return sometime in the future. "Fabulous property to stay in and will book again"
-
"The location of the holiday home was great."
The Granary had an initial wow factor. Light and airy with comfortable sofas. On closer inspection we found a lot of dust and hairs under the sofa’s and around the fridge which was disappointing for the high standard we were expecting. The kitchen utensils were very poorly stocked as were the saucepans and crockery. Lots of chipped bowls and plates and no pasta dishes!! We were disappointed not to find a pint of milk to make a cup of tea after a 5 hr drive from Norfolk. In all the years we’ve stayed in holiday homes there has always been a pint of milk provided. It’s the little touches that make a difference. What really shocked me about staying at The Granary was the complete lack of recycling facilities apart from glass bottles. All plastics and food disposed of together something I didn’t feel comfortable doing at all. Is there not a way that the owners can accommodate recycling on a more general scale? It’s pretty appalling in this day and age.
-
"Amazing house - beautifully presented, with plenty of space."
Very impressed with how clean it was. Ground floor toilet was a bonus (don't remember reading it had one in the spec), as the stairs were a challenge for the oldest member of our family. Owners were friendly and helpful (without intruding). Thank you!
-
"Accommodation perfect, lovely people and plenty to do nearby."
Highly recommended.
-
"There was one little niggle!"
We ate in more than we would usually due to the current circumstances The cottage was short of good saucepans. There were two small ones and a ceramic casserole dish. The largest saucepan was unusable as the surface had significant damage. Also it could do with a sieve. Fortunately there were only three in our party so we managed. Otherwise it was a fabulous cottage, great location and would definitely consider booking again.
-
"Wonderful location, beautiful accommodation and everywhere was lovely and clean."
-
"Witton Hall Farm is a great location and a dream holiday venue for those who own dogs."
There are a variety of great walks without getting in the car and some where dogs can be off lead (but still under control). The venue provides easy access to many northern attractions and places. The Granary is a fabulous house with everything we needed. The hosts were very helpful and welcoming. The alpacas and horses were friendly too!
-
"The granary was absolutely gorgeous, and a perfect size for the 6 of us and the dog."
Couldn't want for anything other than maybe a few extra spoons, but I know covid restrictions meant we could only have 6 sets of cutlery it did make it tricky sometimes. The granary is situated perfectly to be able to drive or get the bus in to durham in about 10 minutes but still far enough away for plenty of lovely countryside walks. We had a fantastic time and would not hesitate to stay there again.
-
"One word !! Stunning"
!!
-
"Had a wonderful time!"
We will be back
-
"Wanted to write a long, detailed description of the cottage and the gems found in the area, but run out of time!"
This cottage was brilliant. Luxury in all parts. The hot tub was easy to use and the garden was terrier-proof. The cold water dispenser and ice-maker were great. Well done all.
-
"The pictures didn't really do this place justice as it was even nicer than we thought."
It was spacious, very clean, with some really nice decorative touches and very welcoming. High spec and very comfortable and with amazing views. Enjoyed a lovely walk to Durham and access to many others straight from the door. Will hopefully be going back to explore some more
-
"Had a great time staying at The Granary, hosts were very welcoming, accommodation was beautiful, area was lovely."
-
"The Granary, was a lovely relaxing cottage in a quiet location."
Loads of walking areas close by, and not far from local amenities. The cottage is beautiful and spacious with all needs catered for. We would recommend this cottage to others and would like to visit again during the summer as the location is ideal for venturing out to other areas.
-
"The Granary was warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived - the Prosecco and chocolates were a lovely touch."
The bedrooms were amazing, each one like a mini suite with stunning views. The kitchen was well equipped with everything anyone could possibly need. Loved popping out to feed the alpacas, such gentle animals. Sunday lunch at the Traveller's Rest was one of the best we've ever had! Would definitely recommend The Granary!
-
"Really lovely place to stay."
Clean and very comfortable. Friendly owner and funny alpacas. Hot tub was great too. A great holiday with our grown up family. Thank you.
-
"What a lovely place to stay this truely is."
The owners, Tracey and John, went above and beyond during our time there. The alpacas are friendly and we fed them with Carrots on a daily basis. The views are spectacular and we went on many Bike rides up and down the old railway line. The Traveler's Rest (Pub) goes highly recommended for eating, all home made and delicious! We will probably return to the Granary - I imagine this location and accommodation is gorgeous in Winter!
-
"The owners were so lovely and welcoming and the house was beautiful!"
-
"The Granary, was everything we hoped for, the owners were very informative and nothing was to much trouble for them."
We enjoyed the bottle of prosecco which was a lovely surprise. The owner recommended the Yellow Dragon for a takeaway, which was great and lots of it. The area was very quiet and peaceful, the locals were friendly, which added to a fabulous holiday.
-
"It was an amazing place, very comfortable and spacious."
The owners were very friendly and accommodating, and always on hand to give us tips on where to visit or answer questions. The are was amazing if you like walking and the travellers rest inn just down the road served the best food.
-
"Property was exceptionally well presented, with everything home from home, tastefully decorated, very friendly owners including the 4 legged friends for our dog Sparkey."
Ideally located for touring the local area and the village pub food was the best.
-
"Gorgeous house, very spacious, beautifully decorated"
-
"The Granary was even better than it looks on the photos!"
The beds were exceedingly comfortable and there was a hairdryer in each room. The kitchen had all the utensils required for cooking, the fridge freezer had an ice maker, the WiFi was good....I could go on! The location was perfect - easy walking distance of the pubs and shop and a short drive into Durham. The log burning and hot tub was quirky but quite hard work as the logs needed replenishing every fifteen minutes over several hours out in the cold! We had a fantastic weekend and would love to return.
-
"The Granary was an amazing house for socialising and getting together."
The facilities were expectional and we didn't want to leave. Lovely setting and will return.
-
"A beautiful cottage ideal for exploring the Durham and Northumberland area."
Immaculate inside and out with beautiful towels and bedding. Dog walks from the front door and plenty of information in the cottage regarding other walks and things to do. The log burner was wonderful and very cosy in the evening. We enjoyed an excellent meal at the local pub and found the little shop very useful.
-
"The accommodation had everything you could wish for."
Was spacious, comfortable warm and really well equipped. Surroundings were quiet and the village pub provided fantastic food. An exceptional holiday enjoyed by all
-
"The Granary is superb; I have very many years experience of holiday cottages and that is up at the top of the table."
-
"The Granary is a lovely place to stay, beautifully decorated and appointed."
The pictures don't do it justice it's a lot bigger than it looks. The beds are very comfortable and great to all have an en suite. A great secure garden for the dogs, walks from the doorstep and very peaceful. We had a lovely week and would certainly like to come back. There is plenty to do in the area and we explored a lot of the beautiful coastline. Durham is a short drive away, certainly a must to see the Cathedral. Would highly recommend the Granary.
-
"High spec accommodation."
very friendly and attentive owners. location is excellent for walking and cycling.
-
"Needs to be made clear when booking that logs required for the hot tub are not included in the price i."
E. You have to pay cash for logs used. Also hot tub was not cleaned in any way e.g. Topped up with chlorine tablets so by the end of the week we couldn't use the hot tub as water very dirty. Apart from that lovely cottage, good area and helpful owners. Good for dogs too.
-
"We loved staying at The Granary."
It was beautifully restored and really comfortable; properly a home from home, furnished with everything we needed. Location was gorgeous and we really enjoyed the walks on the nearby disused railway and by the river. We will definitely book again!
-
"The cottage was absolutely beautiful."
Completely faultless, the owners had thought of and provided everything needed and more!
-
"We have stayed in many cottages over the last 15 years, this one tops them all ..."
We have stayed in many cottages over the last 15 years, this one tops them all in every way, the accomodation, the safe dog garden, the walking, the Hosts were amazing and nothing was too much trouble, the hot tub was so easy to use with the logs provided, we have already booked to go again in October, we have never returned to the same location before, this time we will be staying in the cottage next door, I must stop calling them cottages as they are magnificent barn conversions, they are equipped to the highest possible standard, well done to John and Tracey truly perfect in every way
-
"What an amazing property!"
We felt at home immediately we arrived - such a lovely place to relax for a week. The Granary is furnished to a really high spec with lots of thoughtful touches, even a bottle of Prosecco waiting when we arrived. It was perfect for our family of 5 with 3 grown up teenagers, and our dog. We loved the hot tub and tried a few of the board games in the property we hadn’t played before. We had no trouble getting the hot tub roasty toasty- just plan and light it in advance. The Shepherds Rest in the village is a short walk, dog friendly and did a lovely Sunday lunch. We enjoyed walks from The Granary of various lengths. The property is so handy for Durham and not far from Newcastle for a visit too. We particularly enjoyed the escape room at Lumley Castle, Lily of Lumley - great fun for everyone in a lovely setting. We’d wholeheartedly recommend this stunning property.
-
"Wow an absolutely beautiful property that is really well equipped and spacious."
There was ample space for the four of us plus a dog who also loved the freedom to roam the garden. The views from the windows over the fields are amazing and watching the sunset from the garden was fab. The owners were also friendly and on hand for any issues. We would love to visit again
-
"House was in a great location with a lovely local pub (dog friendly and serves food)."
The house had all the amenities you could think of or needed which was good for cooking in the house. It was very clean and furnished well. We had a very comfortable week and the dog enjoyed himself. The only downside to the property was that the hot tub was a wood fired tub. It sounds lovely but it was a commitment heating it up as it took around three hours from cold and needed wood in its fire every fifteen to thirty minutes. Fortunately we have a fire at home so knew how to get one going and keep it going. I think some would struggle without this experience. We only used the tub twice because of this, and electric one would have been much better. We would return if we were to explore this part of the north again.
-
"Beautiful cottage."
Open fire was lovely in the evening with a glass of wine Very well equipped everything you needed was in the cottage we also had lovely Christmas decorations. We were left a bottle of wine and mince pies by the owners who were friendly and very helpful. The local pub The Travelers was lovely the food was fantastic and a couple of minutes walk, dog friendly to. The hot tub was a challenge for us getting it warm was difficult. Overall we had a fantastic holiday enjoyed by all. Thank you.
-
"Lovely cottage, set on lovely grounds."
we struggled to get the hot tub hot enough but it is winter! And the owner very nicely came and helped us. There was a bottle of prosseco, mince pies and fresh milk aswell as shampoo and all the other basics. The place is a lot bigger than the photos. We were so pleased there was a lovely Christmas tree up too! I would recommend. spotless and beautiful with comfy beds too. Thank you!
-
"Beautiful appointed barn, so clean, tidy, modern and spacious."
The owners were very friendly and welcoming. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend
-
"Perfect hosts perfect house perfect stay what more do I need to say?"
Great dog walks on your doorstep and nearby pubs and food would definitely go back. It's a lot bigger than the pictures make it look.
-
"Beautiful barn conversion."
Extremely friendly hosts who were most helpful. There were lots of unexpected extras such as croissants, milk, prosecco, fruit, flowers, amazing toiletries, games, books, all very touching. The area is stunning with plenty to do and lovely scenery and walks. We had a wonderful relaxing holiday, enjoyed the hot tub every evening and can't wait to return.
-
"Very clean, comfortable, spacious property."
Lovely king size beds. Extremely dog friendly, even provided dog biscuits, treats, bowls and towels. Lovely big, secure garden for dogs. Park and ride two minutes away, very handy for Durham. Two good pubs around the corner, one serving enormous portions of food! Stairs a little steep for elderly, so just be careful. Will be happy to return here in the future.
-
"The cottage was fantastic and a great base for touring the local area."
We felt at home from the moment that we arrived with an amazing welcoming pack. Every detail had been thought of for the guest's benefits. The hot tub hadn't been fitted when we booked the property so it was a lovely surprise to find out a week before we went that we had it and the towels were provided too. The owners live on site so are there if you need anything but they're not intrusive, John ensured we had a plentiful supply of wood for the hot tub! I recommend this cottage 100%
