“The cottage is very well placed for town and the facilities such as bathrooms are good.”

My only disappointment was the level of cleanliness e.g. The kitchen floor was very dirty, there were places with a lot of thick dust and when stripping the bed I realised there was no mattress protector and it was stained. Shame as I would have otherwise returned.

Clean bathrooms with good showers and lovely bath. Comfy beds and well equipped kitchen. I would definitely stay here again. A welcome pack would have been nice and you could do with a colander in the kitchen.

Quirky but very tasteful decor and furnishings, warm, well-equipped and comfortable. Ludlow is a delight, and despite the best efforts of the weather to spoil things, we had a lovely break. We'll be back next year I hope, to do more walking once Shropshire has dried out!

“Whilst the cottage is quaint, is well located, and has some style about it there are some basics to get right here.”

1. It needs a really thorough clean. It’s generally dusty and grimy and has cobwebs. I enquired about this when booking as a previous review had commented on it. I was reassured by booking staff but it was just as the previous booker had reported. Corners of rooms and radiators are dusty, windows are dirty with fingerprints, in between secondary glazing is very dirty, sisal carpets need proper hoovering. Unacceptable. And annoying as I had specifically raised it saying I was unsure about confirming the booking because of reviews. 2. The listing could do more to explain just how much up and down stairs this cottage involves. It’s on 5 levels with steep narrow staircases. Kitchen, up steps to dining room, up different steps to landing with bedroom 1, up more steps to living room, up different steps to bedroom 2. 3. The beds - the single with truckle pull out is supremely uncomfortable with very thin mattresses. It’s a day bed from Ikea, not a proper bed. We had asked for it to be made up as two singles but this wasn’t done and we had to find bedding and do it ourselves. The floor slopes in that room so the bed does too, this was reported as an issue in Summer 2018, but it’s still like that. It would be easy to fix by propping the bed. In the double room the bed lacks a headboard and is too far from the wall to lean on so it’s impossible to sit up in bed. This is pretty annoying. 4. Some basic maintenance issues need to be fixed. Many of the curtains are off their hooks to a greater or lesser extent which gives an air of the cottage not being cared for. The bath actually rocks and needs fixing down. Most of the plates are chipped and need replacing. Light bulbs in bathroom need replacing (out of our reach). 5. The host’s arrival instructions are out of date: WiFi Router and code has changed (we worked this out for ourselves), central heating control isn’t in the place stated, check in time is an hour different (later) to Sykes info. 6. The front of the house looks really shabby and needs a coat of paint, or at least wipe the grime off the front door. It just doesn’t feel like a special place to stay for your holiday. Overall, we were disappointed and wouldn’t stay there again. Our issues had been raised by previous reviewers and not addressed by the host.

What a lovely place Ludlow is! The holiday was made even better by the location and also the quirkiness of the house. I was worried that such an old house would be draughty but it was far from that - it was toasty and comfortable. Thank you Sue for being such a gracious host, ensuring everything was fine with our stay. Thanks again. I highly recommend both the host and the property.

Very well equipped. Communication with Sue was excellent , rapid and informative. The cottage is an old building and naturally has its idiosyncrasies whch is part of its charm. However we do feel the managing company is letting Sue down with their cleaning crew and need to smarten up.

“The cottage was very well equipped.”

Had all the essentials, making life a lot easier when cooking etc. The owner happened to be there on arrival as we were early, she was very pleasant and welcoming. However, the general cleanliness of the cottage wasn’t good. The blind in the kitchen was filthy, we found a half eaten biscuit under the sofa, a diabetic needle in a bin that had no other rubbish in. The section between the old windows to the new had more dead bugs than a series of David Attenborough’s “life in the undergrowth”. When being cleaned there seemed no attention to detail: radiators were dusty, dust webs in the hard to reach places, just seemed like it needed a little TLC. Very well situated in a beautiful town.

Booked via Booking.com which stated 1 double bed in 1 bedroom & 1 double and 1 single in 2nd bedroom. This is not correct. Bed in 2nd room convets from a single to a double

“Unlike other holiday cottages we have stayed in, there is plenty of room to breathe in 44 Old Street.”

The town centre, which is only a two-minute walk away, has an abundance of shops, cafes and pubs and there are always bargains to be had at the market (on every day except Tuesday). No all-day parking outside the cottage but it is only a tenner a week to leave your car in the perfectly safe car park, which is only five minutes away on foot.

Be aware of limited parking. The owners advised which car parks to use and prices. Although we were lucky and always able to park on the street. Very quirky property which we enjoyed. We will return at sometime as we visit Ludlow annually.

We had a great time! Very minor points on the cottage would be the bed at the top would have been better with a headboard and some kind of 'door' to the bathroom would have been nice. There is no real outside space but we did make use of the bench outside to sit in the sun!

“This cottage was absolutely lovely, very well equipped, we had taken a couple of things for the kitchen (cafatiere) but it was all there.”

It was a really quirky cottage and very comfortable, warm and cosy with lots of space. Very conveniently situated, the only downside could possibly be the parking. It wasn't a problem for us at this time of year but not sure if it would be in the summer months. Would be very tempted to stay there again.

“Thanks to Sue for these two weeks in a very well located town house to visit the country.”

Kevin was helpful to fix the window in our very nice bathroom and Charles the plumber replace quickly the sink tab which was out of order before our arriving, as was the one of the washbasin. Thanks to Trudy who came to do the cleaning between the two weeks even she didn't know what to really do. Thanks again for making the bed of our daughter, the one which was not at arriving. Just a regret : no welcome book and information about the litter (recycling ?) and the washing machine not in the kitchen but in an unfinished cellar to reach by a steep stair without hand rail. We hope to have helped save the plants in front of the house by watering them every day.

The property

Situated close to the centre of Ludlow, a lovely historic town, this delightful holiday cottage is packed full of interesting character features, with original tiled floors and many sturdy beams and trusses.

Set over three floors, the cottage opens up into a spacious, well-equipped kitchen with two steps leading up into a lovely dining room complete with feature fireplace and French doors out to the courtyard garden area.

The winding staircase takes you to the first floor landing leading to a pleasant bedroom with en-suite shower room and four steps up take you to the attractive sitting room with balcony, perfect for sitting and relaxing on a warm evening.

Carry on up to the third floor and here you will find the master bedroom, exuding character and style and perfectly complemented by its en-suite bathroom with luxurious freestanding bath and large shower.

Outside there is a pretty courtyard garden to enjoy and all the delights of the popular town of Ludlow are on your doorstep.

This charming town centre cottage with its character features and quirky decor will delight you with its surprisingly spacious and comfortable accommodation.

The bustling town of Ludlow with its castle, riverside walks, 13th century church and varied architecture has much to offer the visitor.

There are many cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as individual shops, lining the historical streets of this lovely town.

The regular weekly markets, racecourse, renowned Ludlow Brewery and annual food and medieval fayres attract a host of visitors from far and wide.

A short drive will take you through unspoilt South Shropshire countryside where you can find many pretty towns and villages, including Much Wenlock and Bridgnorth as well as Ironbridge with its many World Heritage museums.

There are gardens and historic homes to explore or you may like to take a trip back in time visiting Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, as seen on television, or taking a ride on a steam train on the Severn Valley Railway.

Walkers will find the stunning landscapes of Long Mynd, the Clee Hills and the Stiperstones invigorating.

It is well worth setting a couple of days aside to visit Shrewsbury and Hereford.

If you wish to venture even further afield then you can take the train from Ludlow to Manchester, Cardiff or Chester.

The historic market town of Ludlow is situated on the River Teme, amidst the outstanding countryside of the Welsh Marches. With more than 500 listed buildings, the town provides a fascinating range of architecture including Ludlow Castle which is over 900 years old and is one of the first stone castles to be built in England. Today the castle is open all year round and hosts a wide range of events including outdoor theatre, food, art and literature festivals and many antique and art fairs. Below the castle, Millenium Green offers a large public riverside green and weir and provides excellent indoor and outdoor dining facilities via the Green Cafe located right on the riverside.
