It was great to be able to walk straight from the cottage and access the moors and farm land. Facilities for bikes were good. We had a great holiday back in Yorkshire and the owner was very helpful when we needed anything.

  • "We have stayed in a number of holiday cottages and Shep really impressed us."

The cottage is more spacious than we expected from the photographs and is immaculately clean - you feel as if you’re the first people to stay there which is lovely. The cottage has been finished to a very high standard, the beds are extremely comfortable as are the sofas. The linen, towels and blankets are all good quality too, it is a great home from home. The kitchen is well equipped, and having access to a proper freezer for storage is very handy! Sometimes in rural cottages the water pressure is a bit lack lustre but not here - the shower is excellent. Although this is a mid terrace cottage we never heard any noise from other occupants either. As a family of 3 this was an ideal base, the television worked well as did the internet. We found the location ideal for exploring this part of the country and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday.

  • "A lovely cottage, stylish decor, very clean, excellent shower, and comfortable sofas."

Would have liked a summer weight duvet, as it was very hot at the start of our holiday, and the noise from the traffic in the front bedroom meant we kept the windows shut. Wonderful views from the front. Good information supplied, including in an email beforehand from the owners. A bus timetable might be helpful for pepeople who are new to the area. The Huddersfield bus will drop off at the door if you ask the driver! Not much storage space in the kitchen and a bread knife would have been good. Maybe a mention of the steep steps down from the car park [didn't bother us, but might be a problem for some]. Very pleased to find proper recycling available-not always the case!

  • "We have just returned from a week at Shep, and we thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our holiday."

Cottage is in a fantastic location high up on the moors which makes it very quiet and peaceful with only sheep as our neighbours, but only 10 minutes in one direction is Littleborough where a 20 minute train journey takes you into Manchester Victoria, 10 minutes in another direction is Hebden Bridge and 20 minutes in another direction is Halifax. The Cottage was very charming and cosy, and to be honest I'm not sure the photos give it full justice. It was immaculately well presented and clean, and lastly, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the treats left for our arrival. We are both looking forward to returning. Excellent

  • "We stayed at Shep Cottage while visiting family in West Yorkshire over the Christmas period."

The house is lovely and cosy for a winter retreat. The underfloor heating made it really comfortable and although it would have been nice to use the log burner it was just never cold enough - despite the howling wind, rain and sleet outside! The cottage was spotlessly clean and we had everything we needed - the only extra thing we would have liked was some larger towels, but it was not really a problem. The beds were very comfortable and the shower was great! A gift of chocolates under the Christmas tree was a sweet touch and much appreciated. Thanks Pete and Helen for welcoming us and providing a great festive getaway.

The cottage is well designed and is in very good newly renovated / clean condition. It is warm, and everything works. There is lots of off-street car parking, and the outbuilding and patio area are great of you cycle, with both indoor and outdoor security loops for securing bikes, and facilities for washing bikes with a hose etc. The location is great, with uninterrupted views of the hills from the property itself, but easy access to a nearby cafe / farm shop (and a couple of breweries!), and then lots of other cafes, pubs and shops / supermarkets within just a few miles. There's plenty to do locally, and there is easy access by train to Bradford, Leeds etc. within a few miles. The owners provided helpful information before I arrived, and were contactable locally if there were any issues (which there weren't) and the whole stay was very straightforward. I'd be very happy to stay in this property again and would warmly recommend it to others, after staying in a wide range of other rental properties over the years.

It was warm from the minute we stepped in and super cosy. From the log fire to the comfy couches and high quality decor throughout, the cottage was welcoming from the minute we arrived. You'll almost certainly want to have a nice cup of coffee in bed in the morning; the bed and bedding is luxurious and it has a stunning view over the moors which will be hard to leave. Once you do finally get going, head to Craggies for the best farm shop, and we've tried quite a lot. We had breakfast (loved the two espresso options for those who prefer a stronger or milder cup, plus excellent veggie and meat breakfasts using their own produce) and then took cheese pie and dauphinoise potatoes back to the cottage; it was so good we went back the next day for more. About 10 mins from Hebden Bridge and walks on the moors from the door, plus the hosts Helen and Peter couldn't have been more helpful. The only issue was, on our last day, we didn't want to go home.

About the location

CRAGG VALE

Hebden Bridge 3.7 miles; Todmorden 8.1 miles; Halifax 8.9 miles.

The beautiful Pennine village of Cragg Vale is situated on the steep and winding Cragg Road and is the longest incline in England, still a major challenge to cyclists. The road winds its way up to beautiful heather-clad moorland, 1000 feet above sea level, and wooded cloughs and babbling brooks that cascade down the hillsides beckon the walker to explore the countryside. On the other side of the valley is the village of Luddenden and the glorious oak woodlands that make up Jerusalem Farm, a local nature reserve made famous by TV's In Loving Memory. In fact, this beautiful area has also featured in TV shows Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax. Nearby Hebden Bridge is a diverse and bohemian town home to restaurants, bars, bistros, markets, an independent cinema, art galleries, and the picturesque Rochdale Canal. A scenic car ride over the moors takes you to the splendid Parsonage Museum which commemorates the famous Bronte family. The area is a must for steam railway enthusiasts who will enjoy the thriving Worth Valley Railway. Skipton, "Gateway to the Dales", is also an easy and scenic car ride away.
