  • "Was a lovely peaceful cabin with a shared garden area which was beautiful."

We had an issue with the tap which was fixed right away. However, the only downside was that it was right next to a walking route so people would walk past quite often, and whilst using the hot tub, it isn’t the nicest. Secondly, it was advertised as having wifi which is one reason I went for this one however, when I arrived, there was no wifi and basically no signal either which caused a few issues.

We loved it, it was just the quiet break we needed. Owners were really friendly and helpful. Recommend the food at the Lazy Trout, so good we went back the next day.

  • "The retreat was in a beautiful spot lovely views and very peaceful and we woke up to sun shine with a cup it tea in bed looking out at the view."

Unfortunately the towel radiator didn’t work in the bathroom so was difficult to dry towels. Also small things like no bread knife, we took some lovely sourdough uncut bread and really struggled to cut it. The mattress on the bad felt really worn and when we stripped the bed at the end we found out it was and really is ready for a new mattress. Other than that it was a very tranquil beautiful place to stay.

The location is fantastic with beautiful scenery all around. The hut is compact but has everything you could possibly need for a weekend stay. I will definitely be returning in the future.

Beautiful and peaceful with lovely countryside. The Shepherds Hut was extremely clean and very cosy. When we arrived we were greeted with a roaring log burner with a good support logs. We enjoyed the well maintained Hot tub, Darren came and gave us some instructions then left us to it. We look forward to a return visit .

  • "Would highly recommend."

The road leading up was a bit bumpy but we managed fine in an astra. You just have to take it slow. Place was immaculate and the hot tub was especially lovely after a long day of walking. It was within easy reach of Buxton and the Kinder reservoir which leads up to kinder scout was a 40 min drive. Beautiful views, very private and nice and quiet. The cooker was great for cooking a bit of bacon but I wouldn't want to cook a meal on there. You also need to make sure you put the boiler on for hot water. Didn't meet the owners as they were self isolating but the staff who showed us the hot tub and how everything worked were very polite and friendly.

For me the lack of consistent WiFi & phone signal was a blessing.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay, the hut was spotless and very homely."

The view is spectacular and you really won't be bothered by anyone when you're there. The owner and her staff are all very friendly. I will say that this is only the kind of place you'll want to go if you're looking to be away from everything. The only way to get to the property is down a rough single file road that you'll need to go down slowly, but this is only a very short part of your journey. My only criticisms of the entire trip would be that the hot tub isn't as private as it looks on the pictures (there are two hot tubs pictured on the listing, its the smaller grey one and not the blue one), and you're also asked to put all of your food waste in a plastic tub so this can be taken to the chickens at the end of your stay. I love this idea but we were there for a week and after four or five days the box stank the entire hut out if you opened it. We mentioned it to one of the staff working but he just said that it would be collected at the end of our stay so we stopped using it. I think for longer stays the food waste box definitely needs to be emptied more frequently.

  • "I would not stay here again."

Hosts were not very helpful. When we first got there the host went through some relevant information which was very helpful but after that it was very difficult to communicate with her. When asking for some lighter fuel for the fire I was made to feel like I was being really difficult by asking, unsure if this was because we are a young couple. The host expected us to buy everything ourselves which was not specified on the booking. Wifi was promised in the description but we could not access the wifi at any point of our 3 night stay. I asked the host and was told the wifi was fine. I believe there is no access to wifi which should be changed in the description. Also on arrival there was information on the wall in the shepherds hut that stated cake and milk would be left on arrival, this was not the case. Their was no fuse in the radiator on arrival so the bathroom was freezing cold. Finally the road leading up to the shepherds hut had loads of pot holes. A 4x4 is needed for the half a mile road. The shepherds hut itself was lovely as pictured on the site. The hot tub is right next to the hut so is very private. You do get a lot of privacy as the hosts do leave you alone.

Many thanks for voicing your grievances regarding this property. We are very disappointed that one of our properties has seemingly let us down and not provided you with the experience that we had hoped for you. We have contacted the owner and they have re-assured us that there are no issues with the internet. Should you choose to take a trip with ourselves again and find the property to be unsatisfactory, please ensure you contact ourselves/the owner immediately, as we will always endeavor to rectify any problems for our guests. • "The shepherd’s hut was lovely, very well done & the hot tub & views were wonderful."

However the contact with the owner prior to arrival was not particularly friendly. I rang to check on key collection arrangements as requested & rather than simply explain I was told that an email would be sent on the morning of travel. It did but it gave me some anxiety as I knew that I was working on the day of arrival & might potentially have been late & did not want to inconvenience the owner. On arrival fire was lit & a welcome pack was ready, lovely but didn’t realise that the hot water was off so shower ran cold. WiFi code not provided & owner clearly away do didn’t feel we could ring. Bed was comfortable enough but on stripping the bed on the last morning the mattress topper was dirty & old, pillows similar & duvet & mattress could do with replacing. Took a while to realise that towels were in a small cupboard under the sink. Also seat covers have mould damage that the owner may not realise. Lovely stay, lovely place but the off putting attitude of the owner was not helpful. Their cat on site however was charming & should be promoted.

  • "The cabin itself was beautiful and exactly how we thought."

However there were a few little issues we had. And the owner wasn’t too helpful. The hot tub on the pics isn’t the hot tub you get to use. That’s the private one for the owners and we got to use a tiny 2 seater which is right next to the house conservatory and isn’t private at all. As the sheet says in the cabin I asked for some logs and matches for the log burner on the second night about 4pm and the reply via txt I got was “I will be out all night sorry”. So had no way to use it. So the second night we had no log burner and no hot tub because we didn’t want to sit outside a conservatory in a 2 seater tub. The shower hot water didn’t work the morning of leaving and because the response we got we didn’t even bother complaining. The drive in is about half a mile long but seems about 4 as it’s got horrendous pot holes and scrapped our car most the way. Do not go in a lowered car

  • "Pleasant stay but drivers should be aware that the road leading to the property is unsealed, full of potholes, mostly single track with limited passing places thus not suitable for low suspension cars."

  • "It's not *completely* isolated as you might expect, because it's of course part of a tiny collection of places to stay in the one plot - but you're separated from all the other buildings and facing out and away, which is excellent."

It's not made totally obvious on the listing that there is a hot tub you definitely can use - bonus! Luckily the owner gave us a heads up in advance, but a car sat nav probably won't get you the whole way, but our phones and the written instructions we received did :) WiFi was pretty rubbish but we wanted to escape anyway, so we actually found that helpful!

Side note: Links within Mail Travel's email confirmations do not work (For example, the url https://www.dailymail.co.uk/cottage/The-Laburnum-Retreat-984130.html should be https://www.mailcottages.co.uk/cottage/The-Laburnum-Retreat-984130.html). It made the process a little uneasy because until I worked this out the confirmation link showed a 404.
