  • “Splashy Mill is the ideal spot to relax after a busy day visiting the many local attractions.”

The water wheel is in the process of being restored, and we were fortunate to witness it turning for the first time in many years. Thanks to Richard and Sue for their great hospitality. We would not hesitate to return to Splashy Mill in the future.

About the location

Stone 2 miles; Cheadle 8 miles; Leek 12 miles; Uttoxeter 15 miles.

The delightful little village of Moddershall is situated in beautiful Staffordshire, close to the lovely town of Stone. This pretty village boasts no less than 11 mills in the conservation area of the Lower Moddershall Valley, with numerous walks to enjoy, particularly those that link the mills together. The mills are full of history, with links to the famous pottery industry of the aptly named Potteries close by, and a short drive away is the historic market town and canal town of Stone. Dating back to the year 670, the town oozes history and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Now, it offers a lovely array of amenities and shops, and pubs and restaurants serving delicious food. Visit the nearby Churnet Valley Railway, originally opened in 1849 and now a lovely attraction for steam enthusiasts and families alike! If it is the mill route you wish to follow, then Cheddleton Flint Mill is another prime example of Staffordshire's industrial past, a flint-grinding watermill previously used for supplying the pottery industry and links in the Moddershall Mills. The Potteries are only 4 miles away with its interesting working factories offering tours, as well as the Gladstone Pottery Museum in Longton, which is the nearest pottery town to Stone. The Potteries Museum, located in Stoke-on-Trent city centre and offers an opportunity to find out about the history of the area and see a world famous collection of locally produced pottery. Also the historic Wedgwood Ceramic collection is located at the Wedgwood factory in Barlaston only three miles away. Then there is nearby Leek, surrounded by lovely moorland countryside, and Alton Towers is easily accessible. Throw the many cycle routes, rock climbing opportunities on the Roaches, and the wealth of historic houses in to the mix, and visitors will be returning again and again!
