We had no hot water for a couple of days, but the owners arranged for the problem to be sorted out very quickly. The welcome pack was a nice surprise and very welcoming. The surrounding countryside is great for walking or cycling. The cottage had very good facilities and everything we needed for a great holiday stay. The only thing that would have been helpful was a bar of soap (you cannot really wash properly with liquid soap). We have no complaints and would definitely recommend this property to anyone.

The property

This recently renovated stone-built detached cottage is nestled on the fringe of the Peak District with walking, cycling and exploring from the front door.

It is ideal for a couple.

Located in the countryside above Mellor/Marple Bridge, the cottage affords lovely views towards Kinder Scout and is just a 30-minute drive from Edale, which was recently named as the nation’s favourite place for a countryside walk.

The newly fitted modern kitchen features built-in appliances, with fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, plus a stainless steel range cooker and a separate microwave.

The kitchen is very light and airy, featuring double doors leading onto the patio.

The kitchen/dining area flows through to the lounge with two comfortable sofas and a large TV and a wood burner effect electric fire, perfect to relax in after a busy day.

At the end of the inner hall lies a cosy "snug" with corner sofa, tv and a flame effect electric cast iron stove, an ideal room to chill out in with a good book. The door in the snug leads out onto a second patio area and lawn.

With the bedroom upstairs comprising of a double bed.

The first floor bathroom, with an all white suite, offers a roll top bath, separate shower cubicle, wc and washbasin - ideal for a relaxing soak after the day's activities in the beautiful countyside. There is also a ground floor wet room, with shower, WC and handbasin.

Outside there are two patio areas to sit out and chill and take in the views.

Marple Bridge and New Mills, both within close proximity, offer a full range of amenities and eateries, whilst Mellor also has a couple of pubs both serving food.

The Roman Lakes are popular with anglers, walkers and cyclists alike whilst the small town of Marple boasts two railway stations taking you into Manchester Piccadilly.

Enjoy a shopping day out or simply tour the pubs and bars.

Experience history and theatre, and even fine dining.

The spa town of Buxton is worth visiting, along with Chatsworth House, Castleton and the Blue John Mines.

The market town of Glossop, a short drive away, offers a range of independant shops, supermarkets and cafes.

About the location

MELLOR, GREATER MANCHESTER

Stockport 8.6 miles; Manchester 13.9 miles; Macclesfield 14.4 miles

Mellor is nestled between Marple Bridge and New Mills on the fringes of the Peak District, near the county boundary with Derbyshire. A few small businesses work out of the old mills that scatter the countryside, a few farms have free-range chickens, and livestock grazing in the fields, and horse riding is a popular pursuit in the area, benefitting many ancient bridleways. The small town of Marple lies across the River Goyt, notable for its series of 16 canal locks, known as Marple Lock Flight. There are two railway stations, on the Hope Valley Line, linking to Manchester Piccadilly, ideal for shopping trips and exploring everything the city of Manchester has to offer. Interestingly, the Agatha Christie character, Miss Marple, was named after the station, at which the author was once delayed. Also close by is Marple Bridge, boasting many eateries and coffee shops. The Roman Lakes in the village are popular with anglers, walkers, cyclists and horse-riders. A walk to Disley will bring you to the National Trust property, Lyme Park, with formal gardens and deer park. Buxton is 15 miles away and is well worth a visit for gardens, independent shops and family-friendly attractions. Within driving distance are Chatsworth House, Holmfirth, Castleton, the Goyt Valley and the Blue John Mines, for further days out exploring an interesting region. A delightful location to base a well-earned holiday!
