  • "We had an amazing week in the General’s Quarters, the accommodation was clean and comfortable and full of charm -it was also lovely and warm."

James and Rowena were really friendly and it was great to have a tour of the main house and to hear more about its history and the restoration work. Nick was also super helpful and gave us a great tour of the attics. The grounds were lovely too, some info about where we could/couldn’t walk would have been really useful - perhaps a map of the footpaths and places of interest? as it was muddy would be useful to have a hose near the house to wash off the dogs! Definitely somewhere we would love to return to.

  • "Absolutely amazing property and surrounding area."

The General’s Quarters is so historic which made our stay very interesting, exploring the property and land. The rooms are grand and kept spotlessly clean and warm. We had intended on eating in the kitchen as it is plenty big enough, however, we moved to the dinning room as the log fire was burning away and so inviting. There was 9 of us, plus our dogs and we all had sufficient space to be together but have our own privacy. It is definitely an experience that will never be forgotten and is a place that we would love to return in the future *****

  • "We had the most brilliant, ‘surprise’ weekend for my partner’s 50th birthday."

The property is unique and we enjoyed exploring our wing and the grounds. The kitchen was extremely well equipped for catering for 12 with excellent bathroom facilities and quirky bedrooms that suites all the different people in our group. We enjoyed the games available with guests playing chess and had the perfect setting for our murder mystery evening - Murder at the Manor! The intermittent wifi was actually a positive for us, having teenagers in the party they participated more in activities(!) We found the bell great for early morning wake up and dinner call (apologies to any neighbours). Tracey was very helpful and was able to get mugs, tea towels and booklets about the house to me to purchase very last minute which enabled us to give gifts to members of our party. Please can you provide guests with a map of the area and possible walking routes that they can take with them? It was definitely a weekend of making memories in a wonderful, historic and unique setting. Thank you very much - The Stone, Sturgess and Thomas party.

The property had such a great history and was just lovely. It provided and the major items needed. The only issue was the heating when we first arrived. The heating was on a timer and as soon as it turned off it got cold very fast. The was however rectified by the caretaker who left it on a loop for us.

  • "The General’s Quarters was a lovely, warm and welcoming great house."

From the first view of the house as you travel its long lime drive, the age and scale of the place takes your breath. We were there as a family group to celebrate Mum-in-law’s 92nd birthday, ages from 92 to 8, and we all had a wonderful time. The huge rooms were warm and comfortable (quite an achievement in a house of that scale, I would think), the beds were deep and cosy, the kitchen was well-fitted for a large group, and the house had everything we needed. It’s not perfect, there is plenty of work still to do, but this didn’t detract from a wonderful experience. The grounds were peaceful and quiet, and we were lucky enough to meet the owner a few times. She was more than happy to tell us about the house and its journey back to life from dereliction, and her passion and love for her family home is very obvious . The little church in the grounds is beautiful and well worth a visit to see more of the house’s history. We all had such a good time and are planning a return visit next year! Comment not to be published, but as a possible improvement - full-sized non-slip shower mats for inside the shower would be very useful indeed!

It was a pleasure to meet you all and look forward to your return to Pitchford! Property Owner

We all absolutely loved being here. Good sized kitchen and dining table for 11 of us. Comfortable beds, very quiet and peaceful, lovely owners who were delighted to share their experiences of getting back into their family home after 25 years. We were able to look round much of the grounds and church so we found the old tree house and pitch pool that we had heard about. Tracy was able to help us immediately with the few things that we needed sorting out. We had such a lovely time that there is already talk of returning. There are interesting YouTube videos about the house too.

Comfortable, warm and very well upgraded to modern convenience, for example lovely showers, yet still retaining so many interesting touches for such an old property. The owners have obviously listened to previous comments re towels, Wi-Fi etc as all were well provided. Wi-Fi was good throughout the property ( unfortunately the phone signal is not great in most of the location). It was very well equipped for the numbers (slightly small fridge?) with nice welcoming touches. The gardens provide fascinating exploration and everyone we spoke to was friendly and interesting. It was easy to get ‘lost’ and for all members to find their own space. (Just need to watch out for slamming fire doors). A very enjoyable stay for our family celebration. We would recommend it as an interesting place to stay with a group.

We are very grateful for your review and any feedback is always happily received. We have stayed in a few period properties but this one has to be our favourite so far. My only comment on this one and reflected in my score for accuracy of the listing is that the pictures online just don’t do the property justice. It is beautifully decorated and it was extremely warm. As soon as we opened the door we were greeted with a very cosy and homely feel. The kitchen has everything you need to be able to effortlessly cook for a large group and the fridge is a great size. The place was absolutely spotless and not a cobweb in sight in any corner as you may expect in a property of this age. We had permission to look around the grounds of the property which was equally fantastic. We plan to come back again in the future. This property is well worth the money!

We came as a group of friends to have an early Christmas gathering. We have a selection of babies and a couple of dogs, so we need somewhere with lovely walks, peaceful surroundings, and space for cooking, gathering, and games. The General's Quarters has this in abundance! Every bedroom has enough space for a couple, and there are lots of choices of rooms to spend time together, from the grand dining room to the cosy living rooms. Even though it is huge, and we've stayed in November/December time, it's always been lovely and warm. The water pressure is great, we've all said there's some of the best showers we've had here, and with 3 or 4 baths/showers you're not queuing for ages even with a big group. The kitchen is well equipped, we usually get a food delivery and then everything else we need is there. The main access is via an outdoor staircase, so be prepared to carry things up and down when you arrive. We absolutely love it here, and couldn't rate it highly enough. I just hope that some more of the rooms get renovated so we can carry on coming for years to come as our families grow!

  • "This is an incredible property."

History oozes from every beam and flagstone. The location is magical, you feel like you are in your own private world. 13 of us spanning from the ages of 2 to 95 stated here for my birthday. We had an incredible time. It is true that for the older members we had to be careful due to the 16 steps down to the house but the owners opened up a lower door for us. We had to carry my grandma up six steps in her wheelchair but she felt like it was the entrance of the Queen of Sheba so loved it. For such an old historic property it is incredibly well appointed and very clean. Of course there are issues with bits of restoration needed and the odd cobweb here and there but that is to be expected. It is an ongoing project in a Tudor house. The occasional power cuts in one side of the house could be seen as annoying, or you could just go to the fuse box and flip the switch and see it as an adventure. The internet is sketchy but fine in the sitting rooms and the big bedroom I stayed in upstairs (which was breathtaking) and you are having a break so maybe park those incessant Instagram flicking sessions for a while! The grounds are lovely. The treehouse is stunning and the orangery with peacocks was very peaceful. I cannot overstate how much I love this property. If you are looking for a pristine, sterile, modern, luxury box then go somewhere else, but if you have any kind of a soul and imagination then stay here. It was transformative for me for a week. A complete and utter joy from start to end. I cried when I left as I did not want to leave. Amazing.

  • "Not as described."

Very poor value for money We are pleased to note that since our visit in July and feedback given, reference to the property being suitable for those with limited mobility has now been removed from the description. It is not at all suitable and sadly that was the main reason we had booked this property. Wifi was extremely limited - just one or two rooms adjacent to the owner's part of the property but not available in the rest of the accommodation. It is a shame that the owners/Sykes did not properly take on board the comments from the feedback given in May before our stay in July as that would have been most helpful to us. The price quoted by Sykes increased by £1,000 overnight whilst we were booking and despite our request for the original price quoted we had to pay the increased price for the booking. The accommodation was not particularly well appointed, especially considering the price we paid. The General's Quarter's are part of a very interesting and historic building but not as well equipped for the 14 people it can sleep as we had anticipated - e.g. one fridge freezer was a real struggle for all of us for a week. On the plus side the beds were comfortable.

It is an extraordinary place, wonderful good sized, comfortable and beautiful decorated rooms, pool table and outside area for pop up tennis (which we brought with us), and the loveliest walks around the extensive grounds. We spent a happy few hours in nearby Much Wenlock and had a 'formal' meal in the panelled great Hall with log fire blazing . There is a wi fi problem but we all survived that. The manager Tracy was immediately on hand to answer any queries and we are all amazed at the amount of effort that has gone in to repairing and modernising this enormous piece of heritage...you need a bottomless pit of money! The property was clean, and there was plenty of room for everyone, and plenty of hot water for the showers given that the weather was very cold. The only two things that could be improved upon is the access to the property, it's a killer going up and down the steps from the car park every time we wanted to go out or to get rid of rubbish and recycling. Also, the bin for the general waste could have been a bit closer to the property. There again I'd like to think that we were all a bit fitter by the end of the week! On the whole we all enjoyed our week immensely, especially playing Pool with my 14 year old grandson, who managed to thrash us all.

This is an amazing historic house, steeped in history, with original features and set within its own countryside grounds. As architecture 'nerds', we absolutely loved it. The icing on the cake was a tour round the other part of the house by the wonderful owner who is restoring the house. We were a party of 13 celebrating our Father's 80th birthday. The house is so large that we were able to spread out across the 2 sitting rooms and snooker room but also come together by the large fire or eat together at the huge table. The beds are comfortable, the house is warm and has everything you need. It's a good base to explore from (we visited the escape rooms at Shrewsbury prison + Attingham Park). There was also the added interest of a film crew on site when we arrived. This is a charming and atmospheric place which seeps into you, we didn't want to leave and will follow, online, the building's on going restoration. I would really recommend a visit.

The house is outstanding and you get half of it, including the service and west wings, together with a grand wainscotted reception room in the central block. This room is dark and atmospheric, presided over by a portrait of Francis Ottley and his family, who sided with the Royalists in the Civil War. There are upstairs and downstairs elements to it, from the kitchens and stone-flagged servants passages, to the grand bedrooms leading off rambling corridors. Outside you can wander the formal grounds and wider estate, from the eccentric tree house and impressive orangery, to the small church with its amazing carved memorials to the Ottleys. The house is warm and comfortable and perfect for a big family celebration. We were eventually provided with electric but that was not until after 8pm on Monday night (having arrived on Friday) when requested them as was becoming too unbearably cold to stay there. The heating engineer did come back out again on the Tuesday and managed to improve the heating situation but was honest said there was not alot they could do, as they had said when trying to mend it on the Saturday, because the boiler needed replacing, but the owners were not willing to do this according to them and had been out 4 times within 2 weeks to try keep the boiler going for along as possible.

Head up to the first floor to send yourself off to sleep in a bedroom where royalty may have slept, with records showing that a thirteen-year-old Queen Victoria visited Pitchford Hall back when she was still a princess and, during her stay, she watched the estate hunt from the treehouse.

Guests can try to guess from which two periods each bedroom has been modelled on, with some displaying a Georgian style and the others featuring a Tudor elegance.

These superb bedrooms consist of a king-size with Jack-and-Jill access to one of the two first-floor shower rooms, a further king-size, and two twin bedrooms with an interconnecting door between them, great for little ones.

Completing the layout is the wonderful master bedroom, featuring an impressive four-poster super-king-size bed, showcasing the grandeur of this exquisite dwelling, whilst a huge twin bedroom holds a striking fireplace in the centre, splitting the room in half, with a seating area behind it and a beautiful en-suite bathroom to the side with a roll top bath in the centre, perfect for a relaxing soak in peace.
