  • "After reading the previous reviews I was terribly worried about our impending visit and had no reassurance at all from sykes."

However we found the house to be cosy and comfortable and totally enjoyed our time there. Everything was convenient and easy and the owners left us some lovely goodies. My only disappointment was not being able to look at the Manor house. I get this is a family home but it is a hotel too isn't it? However owner kindly allowed us to see inside the long barrow . Garden is absolutely fine for dogs unless you have an escape artist. We would return here in a flash

  • "Shooters lodge was a lovely location for our stay but the property on the out side requires attention 1) the roof tiles are in need of repair and the door sticks making leaving the property quietly an issue."

( I only mention this hoping the owner is informed so no lasting damage is done to the property over the coming months)Also the amount of cooking equipment is sparse ie three saucepans one lid one roasting tin . Cooking a meal for six would be nigh impossible withe the pans provided. Also the inclusion of the fenced garden is not true I know it was mentioned in the advertisement for the property and then contradicted elsewhere in said advertisement. Ps the above didn’t effect us as our old lab doesn’t wander off any more but someone with a more curious pup would have to be on their toes. But we had a lovely stay at the property and the location was spot on for visiting the sights in the area and wales.

  • "I go away in cottages roughly 8 times a year and usually don’t leave feedback unless it’s been a really positive experience."

After being home for a few days after the last cottage I feel duty bound to say my piece. We were 3 couples and as advertised it was 3 king size rooms could be twin on request, we didn’t request any twins but when we arrived one of the rooms had been made up as a twin so one couple slept separately in single beds the whole week, not ideal. On our first morning there, Saturday, a gentleman came to say that the previous tenants had broke the shower in one of the bedrooms but he couldn’t get anyone to come and fix it till the Tuesday. Tuesday came so we waited in all day, no plumber arrived nor did anyone else to offer an explanation so we remained one bathroom down for the whole week. The central heating didn’t work at all and again nothing was explained as to why this was but just 3 small electric heaters had been left to heat up the whole cottage. The table Ian’s chairs in the kitchen were not the chairs in the pictures but instead 6 rickety cheap and nasty ones which all had stains on them. There was no outside lighting either at the front or back or should I say there was but neither were working and it is especially dark outside. The window in one of the bathrooms that was working didn’t open and all in all the cottage is tired and in much need of some tlc. The doors front and back are not fitted properly and the wind howls through both and there is plaster falling off the walls and cracks in other walls. It’s a shame really because it has the makings of a nice place but as it stands at present really shouldn’t be let out.

My 4 year old grandaughter cut her leg as she brushed past it. Shower in bedroom 3 very difficult to control goes from cold to extreme heat with a small adjustment. Toilet seat in bedroom one broke off. This I repaired myself but the fixings are so flimsy its an accident waiting to happen on all toilets throughout the bungalow All Smoke detectors & heat detector are out of date Food left from previous occupant in bedside cabinet drawer Dirty duvet in wardrobe drawer Electric convector heaters for heat for first 4 days whilst awaiting for plumber to fix boiler. Holes all over the roof You can see daylight around the external door frames Shower pull cord stopped working Bedroom 3 unsuite light stopped working All curtains dirty & some of them are falling away from the rails Carpet in hallway was a trip hazard No outside light Wheelie Bin full on arrival The garden was over grown & the garden funiture was rusty.

  • "My scores above are for Shooters Lodge."

I booked Shooters Lodge, Wem, Shropshire to arrive 25/07/22 for 4 nights. I arrived after a 6.5 hour drive to find someone else staying at the accommodation who told me they were there until Wednesday 27/07/22. I contacted the owner who was confused and said they had no record of the booking and Sykes needed to stop doing short bookings. I had my elderly mum and 2 dogs with me and my daughter was on her way with my 16 week old grandson. Following a discussion between myself, the owner and his daughter, his daughter accommodated us in Ploughman's Cottage and said she would contact Sykes to find out if there was any discrepancies in the accommodation price in my favour, Although Ploughman's Cottage was beautiful and she was really helpful it wasn't ideal. It was 2 bedrooms, one bathroom and a downstairs toilet. I'd booked Shooters lodge which was 3 bedrooms with ensuits to accommodate our requirements. I have used Sykes before and wanted to plan another holiday with my family. It's unclear who is responsible for the error but due to the disappointment of this I won't use Sykes again.

  • "I have been on several holidays through Sykes Holidays but this one is definitely my Worst."

The Bungalow has great potential but we arrived to find a filthy place. I counted 50 spiders in all the rooms with cob webs. The kitchen was the worst. The floor needed a good scrub and oven and tops etc were not clean. The whole place needs decorating throughout. The Welcome pack came later after I made a call asking for Logs for the Log burner and was told I could go and buy them. The Tap in the ensuite was leaking 24 /7. I know it was the same last year so has never been sorted, drip drip all night was all we heard. The garden seats and table had bird droppings on them. All in all not a place to be recommended and certainly not worth the price charged. One of our worst holiday stays.

  • "Great location and lots of potential."

However, the property feels a but tired and in desperate need of some modernisation. Especially the heating / hot water system. We arrived in between Storms Eunice and Franklin and there was some recent storm damage, which is fully understandable, but there was also what looked like some much older outstanding repair work that just made the place feel very neglected. I'm sure the wood burner would be lovely but we never found out because the logs never got delivered.

The heating system was very efficient - so much so we had to turn the heating off for 2 days! However the rental property would be helped by:- A better sign is required for the property as we all went past it. A door mat at the back door would be useful to prevent muddy footsteps. The hot tap in the front bedroom did not work at all. The hot tap in the back bedroom constantly dripped. There is a leak from the pipes under the sink. A better supply of mugs would have been appreciated.

  • "The cottage is very tired dark and dated."

The water/heating sound is dreadful! It goes off throughout the night which kept waking us up it’s so loud. I believe this has been mentioned for a long time now so should be dealt with. We’ve stayed in many Skyes cottages and in comparison this is of a lower standard. No recycling bins, no food waste caddy, no cleaning products or basics like a dish cloth and some washing up liquid. It just really lacked of the little added comforts. I was really disappointed given the rural location of the property that no welcome pack was left for us I thought this was really mean and must apply to weekly bookings only. The location is great however, the garden isn’t enclosed. There is a main road which runs at the back of the property and there’s no gate so worried my children/dogs could wonder off. The property backs onto a massive field which was nice for the dogs to enjoy. Beds are really comfortable clean bedding and towels left. I think Sykes should re visit this property as many taps don’t work, we couldn’t have a bath in the one bedroom as the taps didn’t work, taps constantly dripping and poor pressure to flush the toilets. Would I stay again? Maybe if I was within the area as we did have a nice time but I would say the property needs lots of general maintenance.

It was very well equipped and warm and cosy. A welcome pack containing many snacks greeted us on our arrival. The location is very rural yet there is a a large Co-op store just ten minutes away in Wem. Shrewsbury is about 30 minutes by car and is well worth a visit. The Quay near the River Severn is a large park that we visited twice. I can highly recommend this cottage which has three bedrooms all with en suite facilities.

  • "The property was lovely however there is a serious issue with the water system and looking at other reviews these have been ongoing for several years."

You are asked to turn off the hot water tap slowly which we did. However, the water system especially in one of the bedrooms makes a high squealing noise throughout the day and during the night. You are unable to sleep properly. We had an autistic child with us and this is very distressing, they were unable to sleep. Everybody had disturbed nights sleep. Also there is no information regarding anything in the Lodge. Where to leave towels and bedding etc at the end of the stay. The information would be good regarding this; recycling and the rubbish collection also lacked any information. No bin bags were left, we bought these plus loo rolls. However, the most significant thing was the water system, it seriously needs an overhaul and needs highlighting to potential customers. Very disappointed and would not recommend.

Perhaps a few more basic items in kitchen when self catering extra bin bags a few more condiments roll of tin foil.Perhaps a bottle of milk in the fridge, as during hot weather not able to bring every single item with you and also not near any local shops. Just little touches like that to make you feel welcome. Otherwise a nice peaceful place to stay. One thing the property was a bit hard to find we passed it several times before we found the lane, just a small sign hardly noticeable unless you drove slowly and were looking in the right place. On the whole enjoyed the stay.
