Very comfortable large bed. There was a lovely welcome pack which was appreciated. Good area for walking and/or cycling. Friendly owners on hand if you needed them.

  • "Spent a lovely week at the old cow shed."

Perfect for a quiet get away and used as a base. There is a pub just down the road opens weekdays at 5pm, 12 at weekends. There is also a small park in the little village with a big playing field. There is also a lady who delivers food that sounded and looked gorgeous but she was fully booked when we rang on the Tuesday, Carver Cottage Kitchen. I suggest you look and order before you go if you want to use her services. There are no shops in the village so take what you need for the start of your holiday, Cat did leave a little welcome basket with tea, coffee etc and milk which was lovely. Shops are a short drive away. We travelled about half hour by car to the monsal trail. We chose to park at the Anglers Rest car park one day, because we ate there before and the food never disappoints, then hassop station car park at other times. Take lots of water if you have a dog because there is nothing in between for long stretches. The stepping stone walk was also beautiful, but note dogs must be on a lead because it’s a National Park. We didn’t know this so our Spaniel was a pain and pulled like a train ALL the way round. The weather was glorious which meant we could relax of an afternoon in the garden after our long walks. Highly recommend.

  • "The cottage was lovely, homely and comfortable."

The welcome pack was very much appreciated. The owners were available but not obtrusive. The area is very picturesque and there are many walks nearby. Some hotels within walking distance do evening meals which meant no cooking for us, and only short drives to shops and other cafes and restaurants. There is a washing machine at the property. An airer is provided and is portable enough to be used inside or out. The shower was excellent and the bed was good.

Comfortable, clean and well equipped for 2 people in a remote location but with some wonderful walking country from the front door.

  • "Had a really lovely week here, cottage was spotless & lovely & cozy, had comfortable furniture & everything you could possibly need, even the outdoor area was cozy & sheltered."

Perfect location exactly where we wanted to be, ideal as a starting point for lots of walks. Owners were great, left you alone but were easy to get hold of if you needed anything. Woodburner was an added bonus, lovely to sit in front of after a long day walking. Will definitely be going back.

  • "As cat and jo have only just taken on the holiday cottage they may be newcomers to it."

We did mention to them about the damp in the bedroom and no tumble drier. Jo allowed us to use their tumbler. As we stayed here last year it was a little disappointing, but we would like to wish them well in the future.

  • "What an absolutely stunning location!"

Fantastic walks straight from the door or from within a few miles drive. The area felt undiscovered and we will definitely return for more exploration. The cottage was light, clean and comfortable with the hot tub an added bonus. Karen and Kevin October 2022

  • "No wi fi for 4 days,"

We are sorry the internet did not activate during your stay, we had a brand new phone line installed the week prior to improve the internet at the cottage but BT strikes meant it could not be connected on the day of install, despite BT's promises for earlier connection the internet switched on Tuesday 6th. • "This is a lovely place, secluded and romantic."

Feels like you are in the middle of nowhere!! The only issue was broadband and phone connection was non existent which caused a bit of an issue; even though we were on holiday to rest being cut off totally caused inconvenience.

We are sorry the internet had a fault during your stay, we have had a brand new line installed to improve the internet provided to the cottage. Property Owner

  • "This is only quite a trivial matter and is only our onion but the tv could be positioned lower on the wall as there is plenty of space to do so and it was a shame that you couldn't lower the temperature in the hot tub, being set at 39 degrees it was really too hot."

Apart from the above we really enjoyed our stay and the location of the property was excellent ,we are planning to book again in the near future.

The property

This detached cottage is located in the Derbyshire village of Alstonefield.

Ideal for a couple looking to explore the wonders of the Peak District, this property is a great base to return to and kick off your boots after a wonderful day of hiking.

Be welcomed into the lovely open-plan living space, decorated with light colours to enhance the natural light from the windows coming through.

Take a seat around the dining table with a glass of wine while your partner cooks up something special in the kitchen just for you, and afterwards you can cosy up on the sofas in front of the TV for those quiet evenings in.

Step down into the hall and through to the bedroom, which holds a super-king-size which can be divided in to twin beds for flexible sleeping arrangements; in the morning, throw the curtains on the floor to ceiling windows open and let the sunshine get you ready for the day ahead.

After a shower in the neat bathroom, you can head out to the patio area at the front of the cottage to sit and eat breakfast, and later on in the day come back from your walk to relax.

Alstonefield is pretty village in the Peak District, with rolling countryside between spectacular valleys, and is home to two local pubs, the Watts Russell Arms being a short walk away, while local shops are around a 20-minute drive away.

You can find a wider selection of activities just a bit further out, like the iconic Heights of Abraham, famous for its landmark cable car which provides an incredible journey across the Derwent Valley for those brave enough.

Head up to Buxton for a more unusual adventure at Stoop Farm, where you can take an Alpaca for a walk and afterwards enjoy tea and cake back at the farmhouse.

There are countless things to do in the Peak District, but make sure one of them is staying at The Old Cow Shed for a relaxing break with your loved one.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £75.

The delightful village of Alstonefield lies on the borders of Derbyshire and Staffordshire between the valleys of the Dove and the Manifold Rivers. A village of real charm and character, Alstonefield has won the 'Best Kept Village Award' ten times (most recently in 2005) and been in the final of the 'National Village of the Year' award in 1998 - a remarkable achievement. A lovely village, it has a truly delightful country pub set on the village green and is surrounded by lovely verdant green countryside.
