"We had a great break at The Old Clock Makers cottage."
Absolutely brilliant level of hospitality : welcoming communications, lovely attention to our holiday needs and ambitions, and a well equipped and very comfortable cottage. The “elephant in the room” perhaps are the stairs, which are steep, narrow and at the top are tricky to negotiate especially if you have mobility difficulties : however, there are very adequate rails and handles enabling you to haul yourself upright! If you are young and fit, no problem. Overall this is an excellent choice in a wonderful location, a delightful garden which is stocked with fresh herbs and comfortable in which to relax in the evening with a drink or two. Highly recommended.
-
"Excellent quirky cottage."
Well equipped kitchen, lovely garden, comfortable beds. Could always find a free parking space in the car park just up the road, easy to stop outside the property to off load. Brilliant location: loads of independant shops in the town, choices of different places to eat. renovated small cinema just around the corner. So much to do in the area: caves/market towns/national trust halls/ gardens/ peak wildlife park/carsington waters/natural beauty/walks/ museums.

"A wonderful, charming cottage."
Very well equipped and comfortable. A magical place, many happy memories made. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
-
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful cottage."
The house is gorgeous and almost everything you need has been thought of and provided for you to enjoy your stay. The only thing we missed having was a washing machine and washing line. The garden is a little oasis, we were so lucky to have good weather as we sat out every night til late. Ashbourne is a beautiful town, and everyone is so friendly, we worried about the parking at first but once we tried the free carpark up the road and found it to be OK we were fine. We would love to come back and stay again in this beautiful house.
-
"The cottage was very welcoming on arrival."
Su the owner has thought of everything that the holiday maker might need. Spotlessly clean and full of character and personality. Although set in the centre of town we weren't disturbed at all by any traffic noise. . The garden provided a private space with plenty of seating. All told it is a property that we would definitely return to.
-
"We arrived to find a lovely CD playing and the side light in the sitting room was turned on, it was a really nice welcome."
We loved the cottage and garden and Su the owner had written lovely little helpful notes about the cottage, the garden and local amenities. The only downside which is understandable in a cottage is the bed was a double size and my partners feet stuck out of the end so beware if you are a tall person. I would recommend the cottage, it is delightful, well equipped and the garden is very pretty.
-
"Very quirky and interesting place, lovely welcome gift and hand written notes / instructions, great garden."
Not overly practical though to live in, needs bit of a declutter. Didn't mess with heating but seemed to be on/off at strange times? Had a lovely week though travelling around wonderful countryside.
-
"A lovely little quirky cottage very close to the market square in Ashbourne."
Extremely handy for shops, cinema, restaurants etc. The owner left some nice little touches like, milk in the fridge, a bottle of wine and biscuits and other treats. Very thoughtful. The steps are a bit tricky if your not good on your pins. 4 of us stayed and during our stay there were two double rooms and 1 single room but now for some reason they are no longer going to use the top double bedroom. Don't expect large but the rooms are adequate and comfortable with a very well equipped kitchen.

"We loved our stay at The Old Clock Makers!"
Cute and quirky and right in the town near to all the shops. It was equipped with everything we needed, the beds were really comfy and free parking a few minutes up the road. Lovely welcome note and some essentials to keep us going was a nice touch. Would definitely recommend a stay here.

"We had a lovely break at The Old Clockmakers, with it's wonderful courtyard garden."
Ashbourne is a delightful town, with great amenities, all on your doorstep.
-
"The Old Clock Makers is a lovely place to stay, spotlessly clean and well provisioned with everything you need to enjoy your holiday."
The garden is beautiful and a real sun trap when the weather is good. The only downside would be the steep and winding stairs - not really an issue for us (other than getting heavy suitcases to and from the top floor) but could be a problem for anyone with mobility issues. Obviously this was clearly set out in the listing so it didn't come as a surprise. Ashbourne itself is a fabulous place and a great centre of operations to explore the surrounding area - there are loads of great pubs and some really nice restaurants, as well as a range of lovely independent shops. Based on previous reviews we were slightly concerned about parking but it really isn't an issue - there was always space in the loading bay outside the property when we needed it and the park is just up the road with ample space and no restrictions at all. Highly recommend the town of Ashbourne and the accommodation.
-
"Lovely place, tucked away off the Main Street."
Owners have thought of everything, so well equipped. Quirky is a good description (in a nice way). Yes the stairs are narrow but just care is needed. Ashbourne is a lovely place with plenty of eating places and shops near the property. Would recommend the Greenman for drinks and food.

"The Clockmaker was a beautiful yet quirky, very comfortable holiday home."
A lovely secluded little garden, a quiet oasis, in a busy little town. We loved every minute.
-
"I will start with the negatives first, as some people booking this delightful cottage may wish to know some details."
Firstly, parking. The description that "Off-road parking" available is accurate in the same way that "Off road parking" is available to a man on the moon, it just happens to be back on earth! Parking is only (legally) available on the road outside the property between the hours of 7pm and 8am, which happens to be 2 hours AFTER arrival time and 2 hours BEFORE booking out. There is a free, no restrictions, car park available but it is a 5 minute walk away in Cokayne Avenue. Secondly, the stairs. Some of the treads are narrow and winding so take care. Having said all that, the cottage is clean, comfortable, quirky and a delight. Lovely courtyard garden too. A wonderful break, once you got used to leaving your car out of sight in a public car park. And yes, I probably would book it again.
-
"Amazing little paradise tucked away right in the centre of town."
Perfect for exploring whilst giving you some own space. Park opposite fantastic… Sticky Fingers Pottery great fun… and the Towns Treasure Trail was a lovely adventure to properly discover the town. With its lovely shops and eateries we would definitely go back!
-
"Stunning property, superbly located for shops and restaurants."
Perfect for our party of four but you’d possibly struggle for space with any more than that. Every need was catered for by the owner, no need to take cleaning essentials or hangers! Sadly, one of our party suffers with respiratory problems so the steep stairs became a chore. However, don’t let that put you off as we all had a very enjoyable week and would gladly stay there again. Thank you Su.
-
"A lovely quiet cottage and very relaxing garden."
Loved the welcome hamper. Well stocked kitchen and comfortable beds. Disappointed we couldnt use the showers to their full potential and some of the tags about the house were a bit off putting.
-
"The Old Clockmakers is an amazing quirky cottage centrally located in Ashbourne."
Spotlessly clean with lots of interesting nooks and crannies. The space is quite cosy for 4 adults but you soon become used to the space especially when you can use the beautiful garden. Parking was so easy you can unload outside then park for free a few hundred yards away. We will not forget our time there.
-
"The cottage was beautiful, quirky and comfortable."
Excellent town centre location. It was really clean. Beds were really comfy, and we really appreciated all the extra touches that had been included. A really relaxing stay!
-
"We enjoyed a wonderful stay in this gorgeous property, oozing with charm and character."
It felt very homely with so many lovely touches which made it very welcoming. Classical musical was playing as we arrived which helped us relax along with the complimentary welcome treats including prosecco and chocolate truffles! Every detail had been thought about to make our stay hugely enjoyable and we'd highly recommend. many thanks to Su, the owner.

"Excellent in every way"
-
"What a lovely cottage!"
Ashbourne is a very good base, with plenty of places to eat and some good walks. The only downside of the cottage is the space downstairs is a little small, it would be great in summer when you can eat outside in the garden. We went at Christmas and the owner had decorated it beautifully. Overall would highly recommend.
-
"Lovely accomodation, nicely furnished and within close proximity to town Centre."
Everything we needed for a comfortable stay. It was a little snug when there were 5 of us in the sitting room and the same around kitchen table. However, appreciate that cannot be helped. Did feel that check-in time of 5pm was a little late and that 3 o/c would be better.
-
"Overall the clockmakers is absolutely beautifully presented both inside and out."
It is obvious that care and attention has been poured into every aspect of the property and wonderful touches like the welcome gifts and the little tag notices and the information book were very much appreciated. It is a quirky old characterful building that has been decorated to maximise all these features. It is also very central but as it’s set back from the road it is very quiet. Don’t worry that there is no onsite parking. There is a car park just 3 mins walk away that is completely free and you can load/ unload in the bay immediately opposite the house. The town itself is also lovely with lots to do(definitely try the Tissington Cycle Trail) and some great tea rooms, bars/ pubs and restaurants all in walking distance. The only minor detail is that the property is very compact and with 4 people 5ft 10 and over it was quite a squeeze. The single bed room is suitable for a child or an adult under 5ft 8. Seating 5 around the kitchen table would be a challenge. Would definitely go back if 2 couples or a couple and one adult.
-
"Really interesting quirky old cottage, very well equipped kitchen, treats and friendly communication from owner much appreciated."
Beautiful courtyard garden tucked away at the back, so although you are in the middle of Ashbourne it is quieter and secluded. Great position for exploring the Peak District.
-
"We had a lovely time at the Old Clock Makers."
The owners obviously love the property and there are many unique features that continue to surprise you as you notice them throughout your stay. We were really happy with the stay and the welcome gifts left by the hosts were a much appreciated touch. Despite a busy main road with many lorries, from where the cottage is located behind a building also on this road, it was surprisingly quiet. The only constructive feedback we can offer is that it would be nice to have a firepit or similar for the garden. It was a slightly cold week and with only being able to drink outside pubs due to current lockdown protocol, it would be nice to get he best of both at the cottage, with sitting outside but with some warmth. We apologise about leaving food in the fridge, miscommunication between the two of us that was not realised until we got home. We saw a note about a new cottage the owner will be opening later in the year, we will happily visit this setting also based on this experience, we really did have a wonderful time. Thank you.

"The Old Clockmakers is a charming place to stay."
Su has obviously put a lot of thought and attention into making this a wonderful holiday experience for her guests. The house is very quiet and has a lovely tranquil garden too. It had everything we needed and we felt very comfortable. It was lovely to have a week to explore the surrounding countryside. We really enjoyed the fantastic scenic walks and felt very relaxed and refreshed by the experience. The Old Clockmakers is definitely a great find and I thoroughly recommend it.
-
"Great location for exploring."
So many lovely family days out less than 30 minutes drive away and the start of the Tissington Trail just around the corner! The house is very well cared for and beautifully presented. Best equipped kitchen I've ever come across in a holiday let, making cooking very easy. You feel the experience of being in a 350 year old building with all the luxuries of a modern home. Surprisingly quiet considering the central location.
-
"The staircase up to the bedrooms are extremely steep and perhaps unsuitable for people with walking difficulties, also, small children would need supervising, although the owner does provide stairgates."
Our stay was made special by the personal touches put into place by the owner of the property and we enjoyed the quirkiness of it. Perfectly located for driving to popular tourist attractions. Also the start of Tissington Trail, through Ashbourne Tunnel, which was around the corner from the cottage. Long stay/overnight parking is in free car park 200 metres away. (only loading/unloading outside cottage) 2 hour restrictions in bays approx 50 yards away)
-
"Wonderful cottage with lovely touches by the owner su- cake, biscuits and soft drinks."
Great location right in the heart of Ashbourne. Fabulous weekend
-
"What an absolutely charming and cosy place to stay."
3 of us were on business. Full of character and some really homely touches. When we arrived, Sue had left us a cake that she’d baked!! It was warm in the winter and it’s perfectly placed right next to the town centre for shopping, traditional pubs and restaurants (you’re spoilt for choice there) only a few miles to the Peak District too. The bedrooms/bathrooms were really nice. Also...surprisingly quiet given its location on the high street. Also got a chance to meet Sue on the way out who was lovely and very helpful. Fully recommend!

"We were looking for additional accommodation near to us for our extended family to stay and after an easy search on the internet we found the quintessential Old Clockmakers!"
What a beautiful little cottage! The little extras provided by Su were most welcomed after a long journey for our family travelling to Ashbourne from Belgium. Access to the property was really easy and we were able to have an early check in which was greatly appreciated after setting off from Belgium at 2am! The accommodation is so homely, warm and comfortable. The beds were so comfortable and our family said they had slept so well! The accommodation is on 3 floors and although the stairs were high our family thought it amazing and wanted to stay on an extra week! A gorgeous little garden is also attached to the property and considering it’s by the road it is so very quiet and peaceful. The girls were even treated to snow during their visit....!! Located in the centre of Ashbourne everything you need is within walking distance - shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, the park with a great play area ....... something for the whole family. Thank you once again Su for all your help and kindness during what has been an emotional visit for our wonderful family.
-
"We appreciated the extra welcoming touches that Su put in place including wine, a delicious homemade cake, and other treats."
The cottage was warm and cosy and tastefully decorated for Christmas. Su also contacted us to let us know the cottage would be ready a few hours earlier. This was our second stay in the cottage and it truly feels like a home from home. Ashbourne and The Peak District is such a beautiful retreat from city life and we enjoyed every moment of our long walks in the hills and along the river Dove. We highly recommend The Old Clockmakers and we will definitely be back.
-
"Absolutely perfect, it always is at The Old Clockmakers."
-
"We have stayed at The Old Clockmakers a few times now and we love it."
It never loses its charm. The house is tastefully decorated. The beds are very comfy. Su the owner is fantastic and makes the most beautiful Victoria sponge! The location is great so close to coffee shops and supermarkets etc. I strongly recommend booking you won’t regret it.
-
"This is a lovely, comfortable and tastefully decorated cottage."
It is in the centre of Ashbourne but is very quiet and peaceful as it is situated at the back of the building, with all rooms facing the back courtyard garden. Sue, the owner, left us a generous welcome hamper which was very thoughtful. Ashbourne is a great location from which to explore the Peak District. After long walks in the valleys and hills, it was great to come back and relax in this home from home. We highly recommend it and we will definitely be back.

"At the end of a long journey through Ireland and the UK my husband and I spent 3 nights at the Clockmakers Cottage."
It was a wonderful experience and we enjoyed our stay there very much. The cottage was very clean, the kitchen well equipped and the beds are very comfortable. One can feel the passion and the love for detail which the owner has spent on the cottage; the interior is very tastefully done. As we entered the cottage soft music was playing and in the kitchen a whole lot of goodies were waiting for us. Delicious scones with clotted cream and fresh strawberries to name just a few of the things left for us. A real treat. Also in the bathrooms there are soaps, body lotions, shampoos,etc...all little extras one would not expect. Although in the middle of town it is very quiet and the cottage has a nice little garden with a table and chairs for outside dining if weather permits. The only little criticism I would have is that there is no washing machine or perhaps we did not find it. In the end it was not important to us so we did not call the owner to ask. The seating facility in the lounge is good for 3 adults and a child, in our opinion, with 5 adults it would be rather tight. Ashbourne is a charming little town which has everything you need. The area is great for hiking and we visited some lovely villages nearby and explored the Peak District. We would certainly come back and can truly recommend this lovely cottage.
-
"Absolutely lovely and the little special touches like the cake were amazing."
Everything we could need for our short break and the place was beautifully quirky and it had loads of personality. Only problem we found was that 3 of our group were over 6ft, the bed last were a little short - especially the single bed.
-
"The Old Clockmakers in Ashbourne is an absolute gem of a cottage."
Quirky, unique and beautifully finished. We felt at home immediately, Su the owner, left us lots of treats for all the family to enjoy and made us feel very welcome. The location is perfect for exploring both locally around Ashbourne and further afield. In Ashbourne itself, there are plenty of places to eat and drink and shop. We had everything we needed for a great holiday - comfortable beds, relaxing garden and a fully equipped kitchen. We explored the Peak District during our stay and felt reassured that each evening we were returning to a wonderful home from home.
-
"We have been to The Old Clockmakers a few times now and we absolutely love it."
It’s beautifully decorated and very tasteful. Su the owner is a wonderful host. And makes the most gorgeous Victoria sponge for you to enjoy on your arrival. The beds are extremely comfortable. It is in a fabulous location really handy for everything from coffee to shopping. Can’t wait to return.
-
"Beautiful cottage, very well equipped and brimming with character and charm."
Lovely garden for relaxing in the sun.
-
"Second time we have stayed at The old Clockmakers in Ashbourne."
It is absolutely beautiful. Can’t wait to go back again.
-
"Su the owner had thought of everything for a comfortable and pleasant stay in her 5* luxury cottage rental."
Her furnishings were amazing - she has great taste! Also left us a gorgeous cake - almost like out of Alice in Wonderland with a tag stating "eat me" ! - to which we gladly obliged! minus 2 vegans - which meant more for the rest of us! Can't rate this cottage enough - sooo quiet even though on the high street but set back behind the main part of the building. Garden was a calm oasis - PerfectA**** thanks Su again.
-
"This was a superb cottage in a good location."
Quirky and characterful yet well equipped. There is a delightful courtyard, bordered by beautiful flowers, very relaxing!
-
"We loved the old Clock Makers in Ashbourne."
It’s very tastefully decorated, and comfy. When we arrived there was a beautiful homemade Victoria sponge, biscuits and a bottle of cocktail. Also essentials are provided. I would not hesitate to go back again, as I fell in love with The old Clockmakers. It is also in a fabulous position in Ashbourne with everything near by. And has a wonderful garden to enjoy.
-
"The cottage was absolutely stunning, it was like a magical storybook."
So interesting to look around. Spotlessy clean. The welcome we had when we arrived was so lovely and heartwarming. The gorgeous cake, wine and a lovely gift for Mother’s Day. I would highly recommend this lovely cottage, it made our stay very special. Thankyou for your lovely personal touches, we had lovely relaxing weekend away xx

"I was extremely impressed by the Old Clockmakers before we even arrived."
We were planning a Christmas dinner for my elderly parents and had a number of enquiries regarding chairs, tables, etc. The owner couldn't have been more helpful and even arranged to have an additional chair and coffee table taken to the property for us. When we arrived, the house had been beautifully decorated for Christmas and plentiful goodies were left out for us on the table. It really was the warmest welcome. Unfortunately, we had a minor mishap with a lock to the outside shed but, after a quick phone call, the owner's husband came and fixed it for us while we restored ourselves at the pub. The house is small (we were five adults and it was a bit of a squeeze), but utterly charming and my brother (who knows about such things) said that it was the best equipped house rental kitchen he had ever seen. All in all, we had a lovely time and this lovely house played a huge part in making what may well be our last Christmas with our parents very special.
-
"The Old Clockmakers is a lovely place to stay."
The location is excellent within easy reach of bars, restaurants, shopping and the Tissington Trail for excellent walks. The cottage is tucked away so you feel like you are somewhere remote rather than in the bustling town of Ashbourne. The cottage was spotless and exactly as described with a very well equipped kitchen, basic essentials and a lovely cake to welcome us on arrival. We really enjoyed our short break and will certainly return in the future. Steve & Janice
-
"Beautifully finished house."
Has all the things needed for modern living, especially with a preteen! (The listing does say 6 bathrooms, there are three. Which is more than ample!) Thank you for the cake and all the hints beforehand re parking and when we got there directing us to a firework display, plus the added bonus of Halloween crackers and decorations. Every person was thought of and that made our break. Thank you Su!
-
"This cottage lived up to the photos put on Sykes, beautifully decorated to reflect the history of the cottage, the owner Su,had thought of everything to make our family holiday very comfortable from basics including toilet roll to picnic ware."
Thoughtful touch was a beautiful cake left for us to enjoy, it was delicious. The owner had also supplied a range of leaflets regarding the local area, and an information book about the property and surrounding areas, very helpful to help us plan our holiday. Ashbourne was a lovely historic market town, with good shopping facilitiesand historic buildings and on the doorstop to gateway to the Peak District. Upon our return, Su sent us a lovely email, which confirmed our glowing comments re the property. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to our friends and family.
-
"So lovely to enjoy the Victoria sponge cake left for us."
The beds were very comfortable and of course the property was beautifully furnished. We had a lovely time enjoying Ashbourne and Dovedale.
-
"The Old Clockmakers House was a fantastic find - lovely quirky decor and welcoming touches."
Great location right in the heart of town but tucked away from hustle and bustle. Great beds too! Highly recommend
-
"Loved the quirky decor in this cottage- credit to the owner for the effort they’ve put into it."

About the location
ASHBOURNE
Matlock 15.7 miles; Bakewell 16.6 miles; Chatsworth 20.4 miles.
Lying at the southern end of the Peak District, Ashbourne is a perfect example of an English market town - market place with stalls, eccentric street plan, narrow cobbled alleys, coaching inns and almshouses. In its heyday in the 18th-century, the town was a fashionable social centre, and many fine Georgian buildings remain from this period. Today the town still has much to offer in terms of restaurants and inns and is regarded as something of a haven for antique hunters - but don’t expect a bargain! For those who prefer more outdoor pursuits, the Dove and Manifold Valleys are close by and for thrill seekers Alton Towers with its exciting collecting of rides and attractions is just a short drive away.
