  • "We had a great time at Closes Barn, which is a beautiful cottage in beautiful surroundings."

The owners and their family were very friendly without being intrusive (as I hope were we) and 2 very minor issues were resolved swiftly. There were 6 adults, 2 children and a dog for the weekend and there was plenty of room for us all. The only anxious moment was how to fit all the food into the relatively small fridge. Thank goodness we had cool bags and freezer blocks with us. But I must say this wouldn’t put us off of staying and having the family with us again - we’d just plan the food differently! The rest of the week there were just the 2 of us so the fridge issue was short-lived. Thank you Kirsty, Arthur and children for providing a great holiday home for us. Oh, and The Red Lion in Hognaston does amazing food!

You sent us - a family with asthma- to a biomass farm with an industrial chimney burning right outside our room! The cottage had mould, damp, leaks, huge amounts of dust and dirt and was most definitely not the 5 star you sold us. It is falling apart and in need of some urgent TLC

The cottage will not disappoint. More than ample room for 8 people and a dog. En-suite bedrooms were very nice and the layout of the cottage meant the cottage was really quiet despite all the people in it. Ideally located for visiting the Peak District. Plenty to see within 20 minutes in different directions. Would definitely go again. Thank you

  • "This cottage is absolutely beautiful."

From the minute we arrived we felt comfortable and relaxed. The owners were there upon arrival and were so welcoming. You can book the cottage and only take your clothes. It was fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for your stay. Everything was thought of for the guest. Lots of toys for children of all ages. Crates for dogs and everything in between. The bedrooms are all beautiful and have an en suite in every room which makes it so much nicer. Decor was lovely and completely in keeping with the countryside. We stayed at a party of 8 of all ages and had a fantastic time. It’s definitely somewhere we will be booking again and next time for longer than a weekend. Gorgeous views. Close by there are some lovely village pubs and Carsington waters of your wanting to go for a walk. Matlock was a short drive away too for something a bit busier. 100% recommend this property.

  • "Firstly, the accommodation is spacious and it was wonderful to have four bedrooms all with ensuites."

Overall it was clean, and first impressions were good, but there were huge swathes of cobwebs around the ceilings and down gaps between walls and furniture. It is starting to become a little tired in places and a little refresh will be needed soon. The sink in our bathroom had a lot of black mould/dirt around the plug hole. When we arrived after a long journey we found there were no tea bags or coffee for us to even have a drink. As we arrived late and the property is remote, a small welcome pack or at least some tea bags would have been very much appreciated. There were 2 dishwasher tablets left for our 3 night stay and as we ate in every morning and night, we had to ask for more. We didn’t receive a welcome or a goodbye, again just a little strange as the owners live next door in the same building. Unfortunately we didn’t have a good experience at the local pub either (the Red Lion) and we came away feeling that this is not a terribly friendly place to be. That said, it was comfortable enough for 7 of us and it did the job. Carsington Water is only a few minutes drive and we visited Chatsworth House from there. It was ok just not great.

  • "Cottage was lovely, well situated in a relaxing environment."

Absolutely ideal for a large family party. Also well placed for enjoying the area. Just a few niggles. The cottage would benefit from a small vacuum as it allows dogs. We swept up daily to keep on top of dog hair, a small hoover would have made life easier. The pillows in the bedrooms were not very comfortable, they were either hard or lumpy, probably high time they were replaced. The two small external bins aren't really big enough when there are 8 people in the barn. Other than that we had a great week. Although it is on the owners farm we were left alone and you don't feel you are being watched or overlooked. It is a charming place in a delightful setting.

  • "We had a great holiday with our family but we feel there were a few things that need addressing : Bad points first (Get them out the way) * Lack of communication from owner, and when I did need to pop round and ask a question or had a problem, I was made to feel an inconvenience * Stated Detached which it isn't, and I even checked, but 2 bedroom are above another property which on a couple of evening / nights there was a lot of banging about (Not good with young children) * Advised we could use the grass area at the front of the building for the kids to play on but it was so long they couldn't * No Information about local shops, pubs etc (although loads of leaflets in the draws) * Master bedroom door doesn't close, so as we had extended family using the room next door we had to prop it closed with a cushion, this goes for most doors especially bathroom ones and 1 was hanging off the hinges * No blinds on 2 low windows on the landing which face on to the owners land, no privacy - this needs addressing as when kids are walking about that's not a good thing *No phone signal on orange or EE at the property * Towel Radiators in bathroom were on (It was a very warm week) and with 2 bedrooms only having a skylight in not enough air to circulate Good Points: * Has the WOW Factor as you walk in * Great Area to explore the peak district * Larger property than you think, making 8 people not feel on top of each other and having 4 Ensuites was a great * Well equipped kitchen with everything you could need to stay there for a week and cook for the family * Loved the fact the there was loads of toys for the kids, a play tent was great."

    * Love the fact it had a pool table, although lighting and electric would have been good ( Properly to stop late nights) * Plenty of parking on site * Wi-Fi was really strong - great for teenagers * Great for dogs (We didn't take ours) the only problem would be no enclosed area for them to roam with out being in the owners garden or the stables

It would have been helpful to have information about how the heating could be regulated as one day we had all the windows open because it was too hot and another day there was no heating on in the middle of the day. Although it is listed as dog friendly, one of the dogs on the farm was not friendly, which would not have been a problems if there had been any information about where you could walk dogs locally.

It was a great space. Could have done with one more couch so you could seat as many as the place slept and it would be good if there was a light in the covered outdoor space but that's me being picky. Generally thought it was excellent with great facilities and generous, well presented rooms. The wifi was strong and the code was in the file (reference to previous feedback). Would happily rebook.

None of the electrical appliances appeared to have safety stickers on them (PAT tested). Also, there was no means of escape from upstairs in the unlikely event of a fire, the stairs being via the kitchen (the most likely place for a fire to start in any residence). One more point, leaving the cottage to get onto the main road is a bit nervy as the road (60mph) is obscured by trees. However, a great place to stay & would definitely stay there again.

About the location

Ashbourne 6 miles; Matlock 9 miles.

Hognaston is a peaceful village on the southern fringes of the Peak District. Hognaston is an ancient settlement and has a long and diverse history, but is now better known as being close to Carsington Reservoir. The village has two cosy pubs, a Norman church, a village hall and a range of community groups. Just 6 miles away is the market town of Ashbourne with stalls, eccentric street plan, narrow cobbled alleys, coaching inns and almshouses. In its heyday in the 18th century, the town was a fashionable social centre and many fine Georgian buildings remain from this period. Today the town still has much to offer in terms of restaurants and inns and is regarded as something of a haven for antique hunters - but don't expect a bargain!
