  • "Beautiful cottage, spotless, warm and very homely."

Everything you need for a wonderful stay, close to everything in Bakewell. Beds very comfortable so a good rest after a day walking in the hills and dales. Welcome pack was great something for everyone, even the dogs were well looked after. Parking permits were brilliant as it got very busy over the weekend behind the cottage, so many walks from the door we never moved our car till Wednesday. We will be back as we loved the cottage. Thank you!!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review and also emailing us personally. We really do value guests letting us know how we are doing.... We are delighted that you enjoyed the many wonderful aspects that Bakewell has to offer and welcome you back again in the future! Property Owner

  • "The cottage was spotless and well equipped."

It was really comfortable, for us and our two dogs. It's in a great spot with all the pubs, cafes and shops just a few minutes walk away. It's only a 10 minute drive to Chatsworth and there are a lot of nice walks locally.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review. Thank you so much for your appreciation of the hard work by housekeeping, for each and every guest experience. Property Owner

  • "Description of outside space was a bit misleading."

And closeness to the water also was misleading apart from that a very pleasant place to spend a holiday

Hello, thank you for taking the the time to leave a review. I have asked Sykes to amend the description as we do not wish for anything to be misleading. The cottage has a typical small courtyard area to the rear, which is secure with a gate in place, 4 wooden chairs, a table, a 2 seater bench, a chiminea and we have a portable BBQ as well available. We have 4 plant screens as well to define our area and create a more aesthetically pleasing area to sit out in. I can confirm the little stream that runs behind the cottage is very close indeed and a popular walking route for those that like a scenic route into Town. To clarify for future guests, we are on the edge of the water (hence the name of the cottage) although the stream does not actually run through our land boundaries but on foot, it is less than 30 seconds from the cottage door, and you can be on the stream pathway... We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage in a beautiful location."

Beautiful views from back of house and sunny yard.Historical area, so some irregularity on the stairs.Lovely walk along the adjacent millstream into the interesting and historical town with its good shops and cafes and a nice swimming pool. Beautiful river area. Yard not always totally private, but mostly so.Good parking at rear with permit for one car. Also fairly close car parks for £5.00 per day. Helpful to have one extra permit from our host for the extra car for their first night. Cottage a little compact downstairs for four, but great for two. Upstairs very spacious. Some traffic noise at the front early mornings, if windows open, but double glazing effective when shut.Nice walks and easy drive to Chatsworth and its great garden centre and cafe and farm shop. All with no charge for parking. Also Monsal Head nearby and many beautiful villages. All in all, a lovely stay in a great area.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such lovely detailed feedback. The cottage is a typical terraced cottage commonly found in Bakewell Town and whilst the courtyard is shared with neighbours (only because they have a right of way to the final gate), we have tried to create a lovely space for the cottage guests with our own green furniture and tables and bench and planting screens. In summer many guests sit out for a while with a glass of bubbles, just to rest their tired legs after a long day walking and exploring... We really are pleased to hear you visited some of the best places locally and seem to have enjoyed your time in Bakewell. Property Owner

  • "We absolutely love this cottage, but due to the high rise next year we won’t be able to visit again."

    It’s such a shame

Prices are always in accordance with demand and also like everyone else we have to absorb higher mortgage interest rates and utility costs during these current challenging times. When you consider the average nightly price for local hotels and airbnb's in the same location we are still very very competitively priced as our prices are not calculated nightly but weekly, offering customers the most cost effective stay. However it is good to hear that you have loved Water's Edge Cottage and thank you for visiting us 3 times so far. Property Owner

It is beautifully located many walks from the location, very comfortable, very clean. All the facilities that you need would stay here again.

Thank you very much for your lovely review! Always nice when guests take the time out to do this online. It is very heart warming that your family keep returning to us. Welcome again anytime. I am pleased you stayed this time in better weather as this provides, as you say, many lovely walks and days out. Best regards Louise and Paul Property Owner

  • "Overall a good place to stay in a good location close to the town centre."

Limited free parking (parking permit supplied by the host). Dog owners need to be aware that the enclosed rear yard is shared with adjacent neighbours, one of which has two dogs.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. Yes, we believe the other cottages are pet friendly too and so we are very careful to put information in the welcome email so that guests are aware to keep the courtyard gate closed at all times, so pets are kept safe and we do ask all guests to ensure that their pets are always supervised in the courtyard. You will appreciate we cannot guarantee the behaviour of other visitors and this is a row of 4 cottages so different people will enter the courtyard at different times. We have not experienced any issues at all in the past and one cottage owner does have 2 dogs who are shown at Crufts, and always very well behaved. We do have signs up in the courtyard around our seating area, reminding people to care appropriately for their pets and respect the neighbouring cottages. Approximately 80% of our guests stay with their pets and we have not experienced any issues with this. Parking in Bakewell is always very limited and in demand and we work hard to offer our guests free parking. Property Owner

  • "Horrid cottage with uncomfortable beds and very small kitchen with almost no work surfaces or storage space for anything."

Also full of steps up and down from top to bottom of cottage. Extremely dangerous steep staircase without any handrails. Did not enjoy and came home after three days hated every second of being at Waters Edge.

We are so disappointed to receive such a negative review. Firstly, I would like to question why you did not contact either Sykes or ourselves (you had our full contact details including mobiles) to express your dissatisfaction, especially if you say you left after 3 days? I can confirm neither Sykes or ourselves had any communication from you. Secondly, I would respond to your point by saying that the cottage does indeed have a stair rail leading to the first floor, we do make it clear on the listing that there are 2 storeys and is not suitable for people with mobility issues and this can be clearly seen in the website pictures. It is a typical cottage in Bakewell and the accommodation is cosy and compact but has everything one needs. Indeed, many of our reviewers state this and we have a cottage guest book full of lovely positive reviews, with many many guests saying they wish to return. The picture of the kitchen is very clear on the website and again whilst we agree it is compact, we have tried to provide everything that guests would need if self catering and we have often been thanked for this, not criticised. Many properties in this location do have similar size cottage kitchens. You mention there is no storage space for anything and yet we have large sets of drawers , suitcase stands, hanging rails for up to 15 garments and bedside tables with drawers in both of the bedrooms, as well as coat hooks downstairs and we also have a basement cellar for suitcases/extra storage if needed. These can be clearly seen in the photos of the website. I would like to mention that, rather disappointingly, house keeping confirmed that you left the property in a terrible condition, sticky food on the kitchen floor, spillages on the worktops and down cupboards, bits of packaging left on various floors, medication/tablets left on the floor which could have been dangerous to children/pets, smoking items in the property, a bath full of wet towels being stored in cold dirty water, a very dirty oven with a oven tray full of old cooking fat, a kitchen sink full of dirty cloths and tea towels in cold dirty water and the heating left on. You made absolutely no attempt to clean on departure. This made it extremely challenging for housekeeping to complete their changeover ready for the next guests arriving. We could have charged a deep cleaning under the good housekeeping bond under these circumstances. We are confident that this review is not an accurate reflection of our accommodation offering and upset that you felt the need to post this without making any attempt to contact ourselves or Sykes. Close by is the Monsal Trail which is a fabulous walk with rest stops along the way and wonderful views. The cottage itself is extremely well equipped and tastefully decorated. The bedding and towels were gorgeous and soft and smelt divine. The lounge has a wonderful large log burner and lots of wood and kindle to use. Fabulous large comfortable sofas which you don't get in a lot of places. Large smart TV and TV's in each bedroom. The bath was sumptuous and modern. The owners left some toiletries and a wonderful welcome pack including wine, milk, chocolate, crisps, tea, coffee. The courtyard garden is really pretty how they have decorated it with plenty of seating. They've thought of every home comfort for your stay, can highly recommend, Claire & Paul Bradbury

  • "We had a fabulous stay at Waters Edge, it was quaint, cute, welcoming and remarkably clean!"

We have stayed in quite a few cottages in the past and Waters Edge was bar far the cleanest and well equipped! The visitors parking permit was great. I even had a chat to a traffic warden whilst walking one morning. They are around and quite ready to pounce! Very thoughtful idea of a parking pass for Bakewell which we didn’t use because the cottage is so close to walk to amenities. Very close to Bakewell golf course (9 holes). My Husband brought his clubs and played a couple of rounds during our visit. We didn’t realise that the secure garden/yard area was shared as a thoroughfare for a couple of neighbouring properties. The gate was left open on a couple of occasions so if you have pets/children just double check that it is closed before letting them out. We gave 4 stars but it would be more like 4.5 if the selection was available! We would have loved to have given this property 5 stars but we had a couple of hiccups and misunderstandings with bedding and wifi. We left a couple of suggestions but by no means any criticism. The owners really do want any visitors to their property to have the most comfortable stay and you can feel that with the effort, care and attention they provide. We wish Paul and Louise all the best for the future with Waters Edge!

Hello Melissa, Thank you so much for the feedback. We have put the coasters into place to protect the bedroom furniture - thank you for the suggestion and we have revised the information on how to access the WIFI so it is clearer for people on arrival. Thank you for your comments on the standard of cleanliness. Both ourselves and the housekeeping team try very hard to maintain very high standards as we know how important this is to guests. Yes, the rear courtyard is shared with this small row of 4 cottages as is quite often the case in Bakewell with cottage style accommodation but we are lucky to have our own specific area for seating with 4 chairs and a table and a Chiminea and a larger bench so this creates a nice area to sit and have a glass of bubbles or a pint in the warmer weather and maybe read a book..... but yes, it is important that the gate to the courtyard is kept closed at all times for the safety of dogs and children. We do ask guests to make sure that they do not let dogs or children into the courtyard unsupervised and we have decided to add some further signage to act as a prompt to all. Thank you for taking the time to feedback on the Sykes Website and we welcome you back again at any time! Property Owner

  • "Great location with the town centre pubs/shops etc all within a few minutes' walk with an option to enjoy a stream-side path into town too."

The parking permits worked well too. Lovely wood burner, cosy lounge more spacious than we imagined. Compact kitchen can be cold but leave the sitting room door open with the log burner lit and all will be well :) Excellent shower/bath. Good accommodation for 4 guests. Real/craft ale lovers will want to visit the recently opened Thornbridge Tap Room within easy walking - also The Joiners Arms is only 3 minutes away on foot too. Characterful cottage which worked very well for us two and our cocker spaniel.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave us feedback. We are really pleased that you enjoyed the cottage and we are looking into the feasibility of a small portable heater for the kitchen. We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. Property Owner

  • "No teapot, jug or beside lights in main bedroom but good although noisy location."

    Place clean and otherwise comfortable

Thank you for your feedback. We have tried to keep the kitchen worktop space as clear as possible and avoid clutter but we can certainly get a teapot and jug for the kitchen for those that wish to use these items, as we have plenty of cupboard storage. We are pleased you felt the location of the cottage was good. Being so close to Bakewell Town Centre, with everything in walking distance and no need for taxi's does mean that sometimes you will hear a little noise especially in Peak Season but the location does mean that many places of interest are within very easy access and also we are very close to lovely countryside walks and of course, Chatsworth House. We are also pleased that you found the accomodation clean and comfortable, our efforts have been targeted towards this. Thanks - Louise & Paul Property Owner
