  • "Very comfortable cottage within a charming farmyard setting, free range poultry, ducks and a sociable peacock."

Close to great Derbyshire Dales walking. All ground floor, accessible for visitors with mobility issues. Wheelchair users will need to use a car to get anywhere due to location on the A515. Lots of great villages and towns within reach, dog friendly area.

  • "When we booked this on syke cottages it said it was in Biggin."

We know the area so was happy to be in village and walking distance to tisslington trail and pub, however once final amount paid and post code given it was actually in Newhaven not in a safe walking distance to trail or pub so we had to get in the car with the dog. Cottage was lovely and had everything we needed, perhaps the listing can be updated. I know you don't give postcodes until final amounts paid but thos should have been listed as Newhaven.

5! Great location to explore the peaks with a handy garage/shop just down the road. The property was lovely and clean and comfy with everything you could need. The garden is enclosed and secure so the dog could wander freely while using the patio area. The beds were comfy as was the sofa and the reclining chair after a hard day's hiking or cycling. The bath was also lovely and deep to relax in. The property is on a farm but the noise was very minimal and the resident peacock became a familiar friendly face at the door. We had a fabulous time and will definately be booking again! Thank you Susan and Philip x

Of particular note was the very comfortable bed, the general quietness and the ease of access to the property. We would suggest that some new kitchen equipment is considered - for instance the baking trays are almost rusty and there appeared to be no bread boards. We had some late night noise from the tractor also - part of being on a working farm, I guess. Thank you for having us.

  • "We had a lovely week in this cottage."

We found it is a good base for exploring the Peak District and managed to visit lots of places we had on our list. The property is very dog friendly with a good, secure garden so we weren't worried about our dog escaping when he was outside. The property is on a working farm so it can be a little noisy at times with tractors and machinery moving about, sometimes late at night, and there is a resident peacock who is beautiful but very vocal, and kept us awake sometimes! Overall though a lovely property with a spacious and practical open plan layout, and just a very easy and relaxed feel.

The cottage is positioned tucked away from the main courtyard so you really do feel a sense of privacy. And with a fully enclosed garden, I was reassured that my dog was safe when he was outside. The open plan living area was welcoming and cosy and the bed was super comfortable, just what we needed after long hikes! And the bath! The kitchen was well equipped and had everything we needed for our stay. Some of the walks we did; Chee Dale Stepping Stones and the Monsal Trail - Chee Dale was magical, made the stretch of the Monsal Trail we walked boring, in comparison. The Roaches and Luds Church circular - spectacular! Three Shires Head - amazing for a chilly dip - but the walk we did took us through a farm where we were knee deep in mud. Beresford, Wolfscote & Biggin Dales - a lovely easy walk but very busy on a sunny bank holiday Friday! Hartington village also worth a mention - very pretty and some nice shops. Would definitely recommend Number 5 to anyone wanting to stay in this area.

It was very comfortable , very clean, easy to find and close to lots of interesting places. We were greeted by Percy the peacock , and kept entertained by him with his regular visits. One thing I would have liked though, is a table and chair to sit outside while watching the evening draw in and to sit outside with my dog. But it doesn’t impact really on the wonderful time we had there and will definitely stay again!

  • "The property was lovely and clean, tastefully decorated and very well appointed."

Our little boy thoroughly enjoyed his holiday, seeing Percy the wild peacock and the chickens every day. The property has a lovely enclosed garden with a seating area that was a real sun trap! The property also benefits from a washing line, although when we stayed it rained most days and as there was no Electric heated towel rail we had to put on the heating on a couple of occasions to dry the towels after showering. That said, the property is lovely and warm and the heating came on and warmed the radiators within minutes so did not need to be on for very long to warm the bathrooms ladder radiator. The bathroom benefits from a lovely Electric power Shower over bath. This was ideal for us as a young family. The property has a washing machine (very useful for washing face masks during this pandemic and with a messy toddler) and dishwasher which were very simple to use, instruction manuals were left though should they be needed. The microwave and cooker were also very simple to operate. The property also had a DVD player, freesat, WiFi, cd radio and a nice large television. The settee in the sitting room was incredibly comfortable, as was our little boys bed. We found the double bed mattress was too hard for us, and my husband felt as though he was being tipped out- but mattresses are a very personal choice and those who like an Orthopaedic mattress would love it. The owner, Sue, was very helpful and approachable. During our stay I found that the hairdryer in the double room had been put away broken and went to notify her (the owners live nearby), she immediately brought out a new one. I also mentioned the double bed as we departed and she said that she’d thought the bed was low, and would be ordering a new one. I had brought cleaning products, but there were some provided which was great. There were also some toiletries in the bathroom which was a thoughtful touch as something always gets forgotten! Sue had also provided antibacterial hand sanitizers for use during the stay which was another thoughtful and unexpected touch. There was a useful information guide provided, and after a 5.5hr drive a very welcome pint of milk and chocolate biscuits to go with the tea and coffee on arrival. We would definitely look to stay again as the property is so nicely cared for and maintained, in a beautiful central location (for local attractions, walks and my husbands family).

About the location

HARTINGTON

Bakewell 10 miles; Buxton 10 miles.

Hartington, situated in the Dove Valley in the Peak District National Park, was an important market centre in the Middle Ages, having been granted a market charter in 1203. Today the ever-popular village boasts lovely tea rooms, a cheese shop, old curiosity shops, traditional pubs and a splendid market square where the stone-carved village pump, once an important source of water for the villagers, still stands on the green. The local bars stock local ales brewed at the Leatherbritches Brewery in Fenny Bentley and Whim Ales in Hartington itself. The former Hartington railway station, about a mile and half from the village itself, is now a picnic area and the converted track is known as the Tissington Trail, popular with both walkers and cyclists. Hartington is also a good starting point for walking along Beresford Dale, a beautiful place with its curiously formed cliffs and rocks. Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are both within a 20 minute drive, and Alton Towers is within easy reach.
