“We had such a wonderful stay at Wren Cottage.”

The cottage is set away from the road so is wonderfully peaceful with stunning views across Wirksworth. The cottage was spotless, had everything we needed and the beds were really comfortable. The location of the cottage was perfect for travelling to lots of tourist attractions.

Wirksworth 1 mile.

Enjoying a wonderful elevated position with a front terrace overlooking the market town of Wirksworth, Wren Cottage is a charming cottage in Bolehill, just a stone's throw from the town of Matlock and the Peak District.

Ideal for any avid walkers who want to have a secluded space to come back to after each day of adventures, Wren Cottage boasts two bedrooms, open-plan living and is within easy reach of all the delights of Wirksworth.

Once you have parked in your designated parking spot, follow the 37 steps down to the cottage and stop to take in the fantastic views from the front terrace.

Step inside and be welcomed into a bright and airy open-plan living space, complete with a Freeview TV to entertain while you relax on the easy chairs or sofa, and a dining table to gather around for a delicious meal.

The kitchen area is home to all you need for a self-catered stay, pick up some local produce from one of the delis in Wirksworth and get cooking with the electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge and freezer, with dishwasher for an easy clean-up!

Head upstairs to find the master bedroom, which has a metal frame king-size bed and more lush views from the window, as well as a twin bedroom up here, both served by the excellent bathroom with a bath and rainfall shower over.

Head into the town of Wirksworth and discover its vibrant and historic past by riding the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway travelling through Derbyshire's unspoilt countryside, stargaze using the StarDisc stone circle star chart, which illuminates the constellations at night, venture into the winding Puzzle Gardens and browse the many independent shops and businesses lining the narrow lanes and intricate alleyways.

Take a walk up to Black Rocks, which involves a short but steep climb to reach some incredible views over the surrounding area.

Take a guided tour around Cromford Mills, a water-powered cotton mill from the 19th century, home to a wealth of local history as well as a café and a shop.

The town of Matlock Bath is within easy reach and boasts a great many attractions, most notably the Heights of Abraham which will see you take a cable car up to a hilltop park where caverns, walking trails and fossil exhibitions await, or if you don't enjoy heights stay closer to the ground and wander around Matlock Bath Aquarium, not only home to 50 species of fish but also a famous Carp collection living in an old Victorian swimming pool, and one of the largest public displays of holograms in Europe.

If you're a family of thrill-seekers then head to Gulliver's Kingdom and enjoy the rides, rollercoasters and amusements in this family theme park.

About the location

Matlock 6 miles.

Wirksworth is a small, charming market town situated just a few miles from Matlock, on the edge of The Peak District. Wirksworth is full of character with many buildings of architectural interest, including its magnificent parish church. Independent shops sit alongside the deli, butchers and bakers with a strong local food ethic. Visitors will enjoy exploring the ancient “jitties” and courtyards of the Puzzle Gardens, along with the Heritage Centre and the delightful surrounding countryside including nearby Carsington Water, Black Rocks and the High Peak Trail. Rock climbing and cycling can be enjoyed here at every level, and there is fantastic walking all around. Well Dressing is unique to Derbyshire, and Wirksworth combines this tradition with a lively carnival in May. There is also an annual Arts festival with an amazing Art & Architecture Trail in September, showcasing contemporary art and international performers of every kind. With an art deco independent cinema and a range of places to eat there is plenty to entertain. The town offers a leisure centre with a climbing wall and a small trainer swimming pool, The Eco Centre, The National Stone Centre and the Mount Cook Adventure Centre. The weekly market and monthly farmers' market provide local produce and crafts. Beautiful Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are within easy reach, as well as Matlock Bath, with its spectacular cable car, the heritage Ecclesbourne Valley Railway and Gulliver's Kingdom. Only two miles away, the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site in Cromford is not to be missed. In all, Wirksworth is a great location for a varied holiday.
