  • "This cottage might be small, but it’s perfectly formed, with an exposed wood-beamed ceiling and lovely old wooden furniture (no plastic chairs or IKEA shelves!"

) The space is well designed; with a good-sized foldaway dining table, and the living area didn’t feel cramped; it was large enough for the two of us lay out our yoga mats for exercise. The kitchen area is a little tight, but we managed to prepare and cook proper meals,-and even bake a couple of loaves of bread. After a tiring walk, it was blissful to light the logburner and relax on the comfy sofa with a drink. Nice view of Bradwell Edge from the bedroom, too (and a comfortable, if rather bouncy, bed). In short, we found Sunnybank View to be a delightful place to stay and are thinking about when we might be able to return.

Beautiful property Map wasn’t overall that helpful Mattress wasn’t nice was very tough and we didn’t sleep well Very clean and tidy

I am so pleased you liked Sunny Bank View. We have provided a clear map, written instructions and what 3 words. Most people seem able to get to the cottage using one of these three ways. We are not sure what else we can do. We slept in the bed the day after reading your comment (as we had booked the cottage out for maintenance.) We found it,as always, very comfortable. It is a relatively firm mattress, which is what most people seem to prefer and we have previously had a very high score for comfortable. Thank you for leaving a letter for us at the cottage. You said that you had really enjoyed the view from the cottage which we agree is stunning. Property Owner

Some people may struggle coming down the stairs especially if tall. The kitchen doesn't have much preparation space so be organised. The outside seating area is lovely in the sun. Maybe put a fence behind to stop anyone falling backwards si please be careful anyone renting. Also suggest a fold down table attached to the wall so that actual table can be removed giving more space Overall lovely cottage and the village is excellent with shops etc. Fush and chips were the best ever.

We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay in our lovely cottage. In the information on Sykes website it clearly states that there is limited headroom on the stairs. When we cook in the cottage, we put up both flaps of the table to give us extra surface for preparation etc..It is possible to move the garden table and chairs to any part of the garden to take advantage of the sun and the view. • "We do feel enough information was given with regard to the steep area surrounding the cottage especially the steps leading to the main road and the shops."

Also the bedroom lacked space at the side of the bed making it difficult to get down both sides. Still enjoyed our stay as we did not spend a large amount of time in it

There are steep steps to the main road, but by walking an extra 50 yards there is an alternative way down the access road to the main road which is far easier. The picture of the bedroom does make it clear that there is only a narrow space down one side of the bed. However we are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "The mattress was too firm for our liking."

Going up and down the staircase was tricky and required a degree of agility, particularly for a tall person. Getting in and out of the Parking area was rather fiddly, especially with refuse bins lining either side of the road. A kitchen tray would have been useful.

Most people enjoy staying in our cottage including the guest in the previous review. We are sorry the mattress was not to your liking but everyone is different and many people, including us, find the mattress comfortable. It is clearly stated on the website that the staircase is narrow with limited headroom and not suitable for people of limited mobility. However, it is one of the features .which contributes to the character and individuality of the cottage. Access to the parking area is narrow but equally, not difficult for most drivers. There are 2 trays provided for the convenience of our guests. We would also like to point out that, in addition to having a fantastic view, being full of charm and having its own quite large garden, our cottage is one of the cheapest for its size in the area. Thank you for your review and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. The pub was probably fully booked because it was Mother's Day. There is also an excellent pub, TheBarrel Inn at Bretton which serves very good meals, is warm and welcoming and has a spectacular view. You probably need a car to get there but it is worth it. The surrounding area was great for us as we were on a hiking holiday, the hill just behind the cottage had some amazing views. We cooked meals in the cottage and chilled out there of an eve after a long days hiking. The bed and sofa were very comfortable, and the cottage was so quiet and peaceful. We very much enjoyed our stay here. It was a great base to explore the wider area from. I recently discovered that my Ancestors came from the village of Bradwell & to be able to stay in this lovely cottage helped me connect to this & the wider area. Lots of places within easy driving distance to visit & for some fabulous walking opportunities. The cottage was very clean & very comfortable. We didn’t really use the kitchen to prep anything (only breakfast & sandwiches) as we ate our main meals out. Before our arrival we received detailed info from the owners (very much appreciated), the map to location was helpful. We liked the garden too, if only the weather had been a little bit warmer to have been able to sit out in the evenings! So we enjoyed walking around the village lanes & streets in the evenings instead, such a lovely place to see. We took a number of things we didn’t need as they were provided, like kitchen towels, dishcloth, washing up liquid, hand soap, toilet roll, even cafetière & tea pot. Thank you to the owners for the lovely place to stay.

The house itself is compact but uses the available space beautifully. Ww cook a lot on holiday and found that even though the kitchen area is small it is really easy to navigate - and the oven is great. The searing area is very comfortable and the wood burner is both simple to use and extremely effective warming up the whole house (we needed it in February!) The bedroom is lovely with a very comfortable bed and an ingenious en suite. We didn't really use the garden as it was a wet week in February, but it is a lovely secluded space which does get the sun. Good local facilities including pubs in the village and an outstanding co-op plus great kashmir restaurant in nearby Hope, and bigger places further afield. Really easy to get to both Manchester and Sheffield by train (from Hope) or car - concerts, plays and a musical were highlights of our week! But just relaxing in the cottage after great walks in the hills was just brilliant.

The garden area was pleasant and we often sat there watching people paragliding off the mountain behind the cottage.

  • "Very snug accommodation, but fine for our 5 night stay for two & the village of Bradwell has good amenities for it's size."

As mentioned in other reviews, the stairs have to be used carefully due to a low beam from the ceiling over them. Location parking spot is tight and larger cars may struggle to use the space due to the narrow approach road and adjacent houses/driveway access. Garden area is a nice sun trap with views of some surrounding hills, but not very private as the entrance side is a low wall.

Vans, including our camper van, frequently park in the parking spot. The approach road is narrow but not excessively so for a Derbyshire village. To have a quite large garden is a bonus for a character cottage in Derbyshire, especially one with a gorgeous view which catches the sun. The "low" wall is three foot high and has never seemed a problem as it is only bordered by a footpath which goes nowhere and is rarely used. One person an hour, if not a day, would be rush hour and it is lovely to have someone to chat to. Bradwell people are usually very friendly. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely week at Sunnybank."

It’s a small cosy cottage with a lovely table and chairs outside - it’s quite a sun trap! The bedroom was actually larger than I expected and it had plenty of storage space. The shower tray is more like a mini bath and the shower curtain around it makes the shower enclosure feel very small. The owners definitely need to improve the shower and update it. The stairs are not steep, but there’s a low beam across the ground floor. This means you have duck to avoid banging your head on the beam each time you go up/down the stairs! The kitchen is very small but well organised - it had everything we needed for our week away. Bradwell is a lovely village, there are 4 pubs, a cafe, an ice cream parlour and a good sized co-op. It’s set in beautiful countryside. The neighbours were very friendly and helpful. Sunnybank is small, but good value for money. The owners need to invest in the property to improve it a bit!

We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay in our lovely cottage. Thank you for your comments. It states in the summary that the stairs are not suitable for people of limited mobility. Only last December, we invested in the plumbing. We replaced the kitchen taps, installed a new shower unit and replaced the shower enclosure and tray with a high sided shower tray and curtain. (The two shower enclosures that we had previously both leaked occasionally when some guests used the shower due to the fact that nothing is at right angles in a cottage of this age!!) The system we now have prevents water escaping. The interior paintwork, furniture and kitchen units are all in good condition. We have decorated and furnished this cottage in a way that preserves its unique character. Property Owner

We had to wash some pans before using them and we had to sanitise the remote control which was sticky. On a positive note, there were a bottle of wine waiting for us on our arrival and the location was excellent for access to all activities nearby.

Thank you for your comments. We have spoken to the cleaners about their oversight. We frequently have cleanliness scores of 100%. However, we are a little perplexed about the dust on the pillows as the previous guests only vacated Sunny Bank that morning and all the bedding including the pillow cases were changed before your arrival later that day. • "Shortage of cutlery (1 teaspoon between 2 persons?"

) Shortage of storage space (1 small wardrobe, two drawers) I'm pleased we were only staying a few days! BTW our premature departure had nothing to do with the shortcomings of the property but rather a mechanical problem with the car. Never met the owners/keepers. One would have thought they could have dropped in to extend a welcome, show people around etc. Very little moving space. We are thankfully people of average size. This is definitely not a property for people of large stature or with limited mobility. I found the easiest and safest way to descend the stairs was on my bum.

I am sorry you had problems with your car and with the property. We have had a number of 5 star reviews recently and we regret that the accommodation was not as you expected. I have taken tea spoons over to the cottage as soon as I read the feedback. We hope that people will ring us during their stay if anything is missing and we can arrange for it to be sorted straight away. We very rarely have things go missing from the cottage but it is picnic weather and it is easy to take the teaspoons for a picnic and forget to replace them. I replaced missing tea spoons only a few weeks ago. The cleaners check the cutlery every week – they do a very good job – but everyone is fallible sometimes. The wardrobe is actually a double one with a large drawer under it. There is also a large storage drawer under the bed. Part of the charm and character of the property, for us and many visitors, is its small size and it is referred to on Sykes web page for the property four times. The small size also means the property is extremely economical to rent. We agree that the stairs are not suitable for people with limited mobility. It clearly states this in the summary. There is little shade, an umbrella would have been nice, for a little protection in the hot afternoon sun. We took our garden chairs with us, so had something a little more relaxing to use. We took the liberty of moving the position of the sofa so that we could enjoy a little more space in the lounge and to also enjoy the view of the hills! Lots of really useful information in the guide provided, and around the house. The shower dripped as previously mentioned, but we just laid the shower head on the tray, no problem at all then. Bradwell is very pretty and we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Ye Old Bowling Inn, all within easy walking distance. A perfect weekend, and we would not hesitate to come back and have recommended it to many friends!

  • "The cottage was generally too small for us although quaint and well situated for the activities we had planned for the week."

Although generally clean there was many cobwebs. The kettle and toasted were well used and worn, the toaster was full of crumbs it blew the trip switch on the first morning, we had to clean the toaster and reset the trip, no further problems with the toaster. The shower head continuously dripped which became annoying over the week. The extractor fan in the bathroom didn’t work, I rang Mrs Northcott who said she knew it was not working as it had fused when the roof leaked. Mrs Northcott had rang me prior to the holiday to ask permission for the builder to call in on the 29.6.18, this would have been an opportunity for Mrs Northcott to discuss the extractor fan which would have saved me a phone call and the stress to trying to get a signal. Mrs Northcott did say nobody really used the fan and said ‘just open the windows’ I did feel this was unsatisfactory as we would have preferred to have a fan especially as it was an ensuite. The garden furniture could do with updating there was no sunshade and the wooden furniture was extremely rickety.

We did purchase a few items like a Pyrex bowl for making porridge in the microwave and a washing up brush to suit our preferences but otherwise it was furnished with all we needed

  • "The notes and information left by the owners was particularly useful and informative."

The cottage is in a cluster of cottages, some owner occupied, neighbours were very friendly. Less than 5 min walk to nearest bus stop, can recommend trip to Bakewell from Castleton. We tended not to use our car, the buses were reliable and you can see so much more. A week of sun walking around Castleton and Hathersage, can recommend it.

  • "Had a wonderful stay at Sunny Bank View!"

The cottage felt cosy and welcoming. There was plenty of room for a solo traveller. Kitchen had everything I needed and I enjoyed the opportunity to have dinner outside at the patio at the evenings. Broadband speed had just increased and I had no troubles getting signal during my stay. Location of the cottage was also very convenient, I used the local bus services to get around and the nearest bus stop was just a couple of minutes walk away. The shops and pubs were situated only short walking distance away too. The setting of the cottage was beautiful, especially at the spring time. All in all, I found Bradwell a great holiday base when exploring Peak District and would love to book this cottage again some day!

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sunny Bank View."

The cottage was in a lovely quiet village which had a number of shops and pubs in walking distance. The cottage itself was very clean and tidy on arrival and was beautifully cosy, especially compared to the near-Arctic weather outside! Being able to put a fire on topped everything off. I would love to stay in the cottage during the summer months to be able to use the garden and I am sure the cottage's setting would look even more beautiful. I cannot recommend this cottage enough as we had the perfect weekend there.

It is small, (we soon learned how to make best use of the very limited space in the well equipped kitchen), but makes a cosy retreat for two. Would definitely consider booking this cottage in the future.
