  • "The property was bigger than I thought actually - only a bonus."

It was comfortable, lovely, clean and a really enjoyable stay. Absolutely would stay again

  • "Lovely location in a gorgeous village ."

Great place from which to explore South Derbyshire. Cottage met all our needs despite being small. The dining table was difficult to use and the kitchen table too small for 4 people. A good thing the pubs were so close and we could eat out! We had a warm welcoming e mail from the owner explaining access clearly which was very welcome as the key pad entry system was rather temperamental! He was also promptly able to resolve a query about access to the bike store. Great customer service! Would definitely stay here again.

  • "Rose cottage is one of the best places we've stayed."

Very comfortable. Everything thought of to make the stay enjoyable. The welcome pack and milk in the fridge were appreciated.

  • "We really enjoyed the cottage and would love to return one day."

Excellent wide comfortable bed and brilliant Wi-fi. The only down side was the very late arrival time of 5pm.

  • "An ideal location, in an idyllic little village."

The cottage is a little dated but deliberately so. A complicated television set up with two sets of controls which, were it not for the owner being on site at the time, would have been a problem. We missed having an outdoor garden and whilst the indoor "secret garden" was different, it wasn't the same as having an outdoor space. All in all an enjoyable holiday.

  • "The cottage was very comfortable and the location in the lovely village of Hartington was ideal for the pub, shop’s and cafes and having its own parking place as the village square quickly got full with early morning walkers vehicles."

Unfortunately the weather wasn’t kind to us but it never stopped us from doing anything that we had planned, the only thing I would mention is that without the wood burning stove the cottage was quite cold, the heating was pre set and could only be increased for 1 hour by turning the control valve on each radiator.

  • "Beautiful village in the most handy location for cycling and walking."

The cottage was cosy and comfortable. Can highly recommend the bike tracks in the area and found some good places to eat in Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne. A very pleasant holiday made even better by the weather and lack of tourists.

Excellent location for walks and local pub and hotel were yards away and both served good food and wine. Beautiful place in Derbyshire.

  • "The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable."

The village of Hartington is beautiful and has shops and two pubs, both of which serve excellent food. Lots of walks accessible directly from the village. 25 minutes drive to Alton Towers. Perfect location. Easy to get around on the windy, hilly roads.

Delight in a break in the great outdoors and return each day to this homely base, with two bedrooms it happily sleeps four people, holiday with another couple or bring your family of four on a Peaks adventure.

Take in the pretty stone exterior before entering your new home from home, pulling off your walking boots in the handy front porch before stepping into the living space.

A brightly burning woodburning stove set within a small fireplace creates a classic cottage atmosphere, paired alongside the elegant wing-backed armchairs and leather sofa for you to relax on while you enjoy a film on the TV.

Sit at the dining table here too and use the WiFi to browse the web for inspiration, planning some last minute activities into your fun-filled trip.

Continue into the country kitchen and find the shaker-style units to be home to a fantastic range of appliances to assist you on your self-catered stay, including an impressive range cooker and hob.

Perch at the breakfast table in here with your breakfast, or take your morning coffee out into the rear patio garden, fashioned into a 'garden room' it benefits from shelter overhead with furniture and pretty plants beneath it.

Head upstairs to the first floor when night falls and settle into the king-size bedroom, with an attractive wrought-iron bed frame and views over the village from the window, rest here and wake up to a shower in your en-suite shower room.

The second bedroom is set up as a twin room, with this room enjoying rustic exposed beams above, and views over the back of the cottage, served by the shared bathroom.

To the rear of the cottage you can discover the famous Hartington Cheese Shop which has been open for almost 40 years and has a fantastic reputation for selling the most wonderful and quality cheese from all around, as well as locally-made Derbyshire cheese.

Drive ten miles to Stoop Farm and create unforgettable memories with an Alpaca Experience; take one of these sweet furry creatures on a ramble around the fields and offer them some treats before sitting down for some tea and cake on the farm.

In the other direction, more excitement awaits at Peak Wildlife Park which specialises in bird collections and small mammals, meet a rare warty pig and watch the meerkats bobbing and scurrying about!

Embark on a walk south along the Dove Valley from the village of Hartington and circle round to the west to visit Thor's Cave leading up to Wetton Hill, a great peak offering stunning, commanding views of the area.

Marvel at the grand stately home of Haddon Hall, a Tudor hall with Elizabethan gardens settled beneath Bakewell, while the magnificent Chatsworth House is not to be missed either, frequently used as a filming location for period dramas, it rests alongside the River Derwent and offers a fantastic day out.

Follow the High Peak Trail for an easy way to discover the area, or hire bikes to cycle past this incredible scenery.

Enjoy a break full of activities and great company in the Peaks at the delightful Rose Cottage.

About the location

Bakewell 10 miles; Buxton 10 miles.

Hartington, situated in the Dove Valley in the Peak District National Park, was an important market centre in the Middle Ages, having been granted a market charter in 1203. Today the ever-popular village boasts lovely tea rooms, a cheese shop, old curiosity shops, traditional pubs and a splendid market square where the stone-carved village pump, once an important source of water for the villagers, still stands on the green. The local bars stock local ales brewed at the Leatherbritches Brewery in Fenny Bentley and Whim Ales in Hartington itself. The former Hartington railway station, about a mile and half from the village itself, is now a picnic area and the converted track is known as the Tissington Trail, popular with both walkers and cyclists. Hartington is also a good starting point for walking along Beresford Dale, a beautiful place with its curiously formed cliffs and rocks. Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are both within a 20 minute drive, and Alton Towers is within easy reach.
