  • "Fantastic place, very comfortable."

Wouldn’t have been as comfortable with 6 adults as there is only 2 2 seater sofas, there was only 3 of us. Would definitely return if in the area.

  • "We have just returned from a lovely weeks stay at the barn."

The barn has everything you could need. Very modern and clean. More storage for clothes would be great but apart from that it is spot on and it didn’t bother our stay. The owners are very helpful and the hot tub was a great hit for everyone. Holmfirth is a lovely place to visit with lots of walks and shops, pubs and places to eat and visit Would definitely make a return visit. Nic, Joe & family

Hello Nicola It was a pleasure to host you and your family. Thank you for the positive and constructive review. Kind Regards Sheila Property Owner

  • "Lovely property with everything you need to enjoy a relaxing stay in Holmfirth."

Whilst the owners live on site they are unobtrusive but available if needed. The location is at the top of a very steep hill so taxis were needed but these are readily available locally. Would happily stay here again !!

  • "We had a fabulous time there was a little hitch with the heating when we arrived, but we arrived early and luckily it was available and Sheila kindly let us in which was lovely."

Once her hubby came later to fix the heating it was lovely all wkend and we lit the log burner too. The kitchen was quite cold but as we didn’t spend time in there it didn’t really matter. The carding shed down the road does a fabulous breakfast and it was so different and quirky l. We would revisit as holmfirth is so fun and lovely and lively, we spent all afternoon early evening visiting different pubs and went for a lovely curry too. Taxi was easy to get back as the curry house rang for us and it was £15 for a 6 seater, so worth it as the hill is very steep to walk up and it was raining. Overall it was a fun visit

Hi Alison Thank you for your review. We have now moved the thermostat nearer the kitchen, as we think it was in the wrong place maybe and knocking off too soon when warm in lounge. Carding Shed is great isn’t, particularly for breakfast. Glad you enjoyed Holmfirth, the Festivals in the Summer are a real draw too. Property Owner

  • "Great location just up the road from a load of cafes, restaurants and pubs."

House had great amenities but the downstairs was freezing cold despite following the instructions for the thermostat. House was also pretty dirty, there was a used earbud under our bed.

Thank you for your review Lewis. We have relocated the thermostat now to nearer the kitchen, as I think that may have been an issue. Housekeeping is a priority for us, so apologise about the earbud , sometimes things get overlooked. I will speak to housekeeping about that but I refute that the house was ‘pretty dirty’, it’s generally immaculate. Property Owner

  • "(Please see below for an updated and formatted review) Positives - Proximity to Holmfirth, owner was responsive when contacted, the hot tub was warm, solid and quick Wi-Fi."

The kitchen had plenty of roasting trays and a good selection of utensils. Negatives: The front door could not be opened on arrival and it was pouring with rain. Access was only gained as the cleaners had left their keys in the patio door, later that evening the front door handle came off the door while closing it and a repair person had to be called out the following day, apparently the spindle had broken perhaps during the previous occupants stay. While we appreciate the owner was unwell, there was no meeting on arrival to answer any questions. The only meeting we had was with the son of the owner and when we advised we could not open the front door we were told to just 'give it a good shove'. There was no indication in the house instructions of where the dog could be let out also. The property was quite dusty all round and there had been no cleaning behind sofas and doors. Keeping in mind this was a dog friendly location the vacuum was locked away and was only found by mistake as the 'cleaners' had left the cupboard keys. The residents had to ask for the hoover to be made available with a battery. The hoover was also found to be dirty and clogged with hair. The hot tub was also quite dirty in the bottom with grit and had clearly not been cleaned out for a while. The downstairs heating would not work while the log burner was lit so the lower ground floor kitchen was very cold (13 degrees) as the thermostat is on the middle ground floor near the log burner. This meant that preparing food was challenging because of the cold. There were no tea towels, and the kitchen was lacking in saucepans to cook with and ovenproof cookware to keep food warm. Only 2 dishwasher tablets were provided for 6 people over 4 days, 'to get us started'! Luckily, we had brought tea-towels but were given no indication of the need to bring dishwasher tablets. Purchasing washing up liquid was required as the bottle was nearly empty. Bedroom 1 with the ensuite was a good size, as was the bathroom, but there was no hanging storage because the single cupboard couldn't accommodate a normal coat hanger's width. Bedside tables were the only storage. Bedrooms 2 & 3 had no hanging cupboards. Bedroom 2 only had a small (3' high) cupboard with two singles beds together and pushed up against the wall and the twin room (bedroom 3) only had a bedside table. Everyone had to live out of suitcases for 4 days. The adhesive door hooks fell off regularly with only so much as a towel hanging on one. There were also no mirrors in any of the bedrooms, only the ensuite and main bathroom. The bedroom walls were very thin with no soundproofing so snoring could be heard across the rooms. The living area wasn't particularly comfortable as the two sofas couldn't accommodate 6 people. The sofas also had to be moved so that both sides of the dining table could be accessed away from the wall. The living room felt like it had furniture in it that simply didn't suit the utility of the room and number of people staying. A large low table was in one corner of the room that served no purpose and there were no instructions on how to operate the heating controls. Unfortunately, given all the above we would not recommend this property at this price point.

Thank you for your comprehensive review. I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations. We did have a problem with the staining of the headboard and large dog prints all over the middle bedrooms white linen on your departure , which we reported. We should have made clear we are very dog friendly but they are not allowed upstairs or on the white bedding, so my apologies. The front door was not broken prior to your arrival but we were happy ( and fortunate) to get a tradesman to fix the new door the next day, They had not encountered such damage before. Fortunately, the double patio doors meant we hope it wasn’t temporarily too inconvenient overnight. We now leave the hoover for all customers, as it was last minute it may not have been fully emptied, apologies. I was unwell but dealt with the various issues you contacted me about, which is why I sent my son immediately with the hoover you requested. We do not meet and greet , as there is a large amount of information provided prior to arrival on your confirmation and a leaflet full of information in the property and my number to contact if needed, as we are neighbouring but don’t want to be intrusive. The hot tub is thoroughly cleaned prior to all guests arriving. Any grit is transferred by bare feet usually if footwear is not worn prior to getting in. We will address this by adding to the information sent to guests prior to arrival. We try your keep do and do nots to a minimum so guests can enjoy their stay in tranquility. Apologies you did not like the lounge furniture configuration, some guests do move things around to suit their individual needs, which we are quite relaxed about too. It is self catering accommodation and we do indeed provide enough for the guests to get going initially with the expectation, when used up they provide additional for themselves. Again apologies if this was not communicated clearly enough. The house is surrounded by beautiful countryside and there are myriad walks for dogs. Property Owner

  • "We had a beautiful Xmas in the barn despite horrible weather."

The dining area was very small for 6 people, impossible to access the table. After we moved the furniture that was much better. I would have loved to have a broom . For a X mas dinner there might have been some more pans. Overall though it is very cosy, clean, friendly. We had a great time.

Germaine Thank you so much for your review. Some guests do change the configuration of the lounge to suit their individual needs, which is fine with us. We have taken on board that , especially for meals like Christmas dinner, we may need to provide more than an average number of pans, for the various components. We have now made a hoover available at all times in the property and there is a dustpan and brush in the kitchen already. Property Owner

Super comfy beds and lovely cosy living room. We couldn’t seem to find any logs for the fire as the basket where they looked like they had been stored was empty (on reflection we could have messaged to ask so there might have been some available). Would recommend to friends or family, thank you

Hello Rio Thank you for the review. We could indeed have provided kindling, firelighters and logs if you had let me know? We usually do , so apologies, housekeeping must have overlooked it. Property Owner

My work mate and I stayed Mon to Fri as we were up working in the area. The house provides everything you could need, including plenty of secure parking. We didn’t use the kitchen, or the lounge, or the hot tub, but it’s all there if you need it. Lovely beds and bathrooms. Friendly owners. Highly recommended. Will stay again for sure. Nice easy roll down the hill on our bikes into Holmfirth for food and drinks, but it is a very steep climb pedalling back up! 10/10

About the location

HOLMFIRTH

Peak District National Park 3 miles; Meltham 4 miles

The old traditional Pennine town of Holmfirth is situated in the heart of the beautiful Holme Valley, on the edge of the West Yorkshire Pennines. Made famous by The Last of The Summer Wine TV series, there is more to Holmfirth than Compo and Nora Batty’s stockings! The ‘Picturedrome’, the North of England’s finest live music venue attracts many famous bands and is located right in the centre of the town. The pelotons from the Tour de France 2014 and the Tour de Yorkshire have both been through this quaint Holme Valley town en route to the iconic 524 metre Holme Moss climb two miles away. It is in these hills where cycling’s triple Olympic Medalist Ed Clancy grew up. Holmfirth also has a good public swimming pool and fitness centre, parks and some super shops and restaurants. The people here are friendly, the streets are quaint and the scenery is breathtaking. The Peak District National Park with its moors, dales, forests, lakes and reservoirs is also easily accessible. The Upper Derwent Valley, home to the spectacular Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs, and where the famous 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron practiced the audacious bombing raid on the Ruhr valley in 1943, is only a short scenic drive away. Slightly further is Chatsworth, the stately home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and situated close to the market town of Bakewell, the home of Bakewell Puddings. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The National Coal Mining Museum, Wentworth Castle, and the Hepworth Gallery are also within short drives away and well worth a visit. For a spot of culture, Holmfirth has annual festivals with many more attractions that bring visitors back for more; such as the Folk, Arts, and Food & Drink Festivals. Also not to be missed, is Holmfirth Vineyard and Restaurant, where you can book wine tasting tours and enjoy a lovely meal in the restaurant.
