“The Jolly Hatter is a little gem ...”

The Jolly Hatter is a little gem tucked away up the hill in Cromer. Getting a car up the drive and, even more so, back out, is challenging but doable (assuming you have no more than an average family car) owing to the limited width at the point of access, particularly given that it is a very busy road on a steep hill. However, it is well worth the effort. The cottage (and its outside spaces) is charming. The owners go way beyond ‘normal’ expectations in terms of ensuring comfort and convenience for their guests. Dog’s are not only welcome, but their needs are also considered; eg a box of treats provided, feeding bowls and a large towel to dry them off after walks and even spare ‘poo’ bags if required. The property was comfortable and clean with a number of surprises, e.g. a jacuzzi style bath and an outhouse to store muddy boots, bicycles, etc. The owners are considerate and helpful and respond quickly and positively to concerns raised. For all the age of the property, it is very comfortable and well equipped for modern living. All in all a perfect base for one person or a couple (plus a dog) wanting to explore the stunning countryside that surrounds the village.

The property

A beautiful renovation of a stone-built Grade II listed Arkwright Estate worker’s cottage in Cromford.

This charming detached property is set back from the road with great views and lots of space inside and out.

A fantastic setting for a couple’s romantic break with no debates about designated drivers as Cromford’s fine eateries and inns are all within a short stroll.

Kick your boots off in the porch and step into a tastefully furnished and surprisingly large sitting room with exposed beams, original quarry tile flooring and a glowing woodburning stove in an impressive stone fireplace.

The modernised kitchen and separate dining room has everything you need for a cosy dinner together.

Upstairs there is an equally beautiful spacious bedroom with king-size bed, chaise longue, window seat and the original fire place with beautiful stencilling work.

After a hard day exploring the Peaks, there’s a lovely spa bath to soak away any accumulated aches and pains.

There’s a delightful landscaped garden with fantastic uninterrupted countryside views belying the village central location, a simply lovely place to dine alfresco and a useful outbuilding (formerly the piggery) is a secure place to store bikes, handy to know given the proximity of Carsington Water, High Peak, Monsal and Tissington Cycle Trails.

Cromford offers a selection of quality pubs, shops and cafés, as well as Arkwright’s Cromford Mill and canal, a world heritage site.

The area boasts an abundance of attractions such as Gulliver's Kingdom, the nearby Peak District Mining Museum and splendid Chatsworth House.

Visitors can take a ride on the Heights of Abraham cable car and take in the views in style, whilst the more active are catered for with plentiful walking around the Derwent Valley and the White Peak.

Something for everyone all year round.
