"Lovely surroundings, very handy for travelling around."
Andrew and Lucy the proprietors were helpful.
"Lovely little bedsit on a nice farm, very pleasant hosts."
Accommodation had everything we needed for a relaxed week of gentle walks with our greyhound. A fenced/walled path around the farm is perfect for morning and evening strolls with a dog, with a lot of interesting things for them to sniff! The local paths outside of the main farm are on farm land so have walls/stiles which you may need to lift dogs over. Plenty of other walks a short drive away are more accessible. Inside, the property was in good condition - everything worked as it should and the well equipped kitchen was clean with nice appliances. Really minor thing for most people, but bins: Glass, composting, paper/cans/plastic and non-recyclable, which was nice! Andrew, the host, kindly kept the giddy farm dogs calm and out of the way of our nervous rescue hound when she was out on the farm, and that was very much appreciated. Great hosts, great accommodation, great area, great walks, great week to unwind and relax.
"A small place is what we expected, that’s what we got, we didn’t want or need anything more."
It was clean, had everything you need to self cater, the owners were friendly & helpful. Perfect location for exploring Derbyshire. Loads of great walks to find without driving for miles, & dog friendly too.
"Lucy and Andrew were perfect hosts."
Very welcoming and very willing to share their local knowledge, ensuring we had a great time. The directions to the cottage were clear and concise and the welcome pack of tea, coffee and biscuits was more than welcome after our long trip up. The cottage itself was warm and comfortable and beautifully equipped. I'd strongly recommend these hosts to anyone wanting a quiet break but not be too far from the facilities of Buxton and the cycling trails.
"Had the most lovely 2 nights at the shavings as a celebration of our engagement."
It was so comfy and cozy, especially with the little fire/heater and was extremely clean too! The owners were very accommodating.
"Very clean and well equipped cottage ."
The hosts were excellent nothing to much trouble , also adding a personal touch with complimentary toiletries , tea/ coffee etc . Buxton very close by , Pooles Cavern and plenty of lovely walking areas .
"Very nice refurb nice and relaxing"
"Thank you so much for being so welcoming and friendly, providing a high spec accommodation while still being dog friendly!"
We loved our stay, the only thing that would stop us coming back with the dogs is having an enclosed front garden/ area onsite to take the dogs to toilet/ run around. I think the locals didn't like us with flash lights going down the track, we got some funny stares a few times. Other than this we will definitely be back for a long weekend without the dogs to visit the local caverns and places which are easier without pooches!
"Lovely little cottage."
Clean, warm and cosy. Had everything we needed.. There were only two issues for me, one was the space round the bed which was very tight for people, like myself, with mobility issues, The other was the TV/Freesat system. It took ages to switch it on with the two remotes. Otherwise no complaints and the owners were very friendly and helpful.
"Lovely area, pleasant 2mile walk into buxton, owners very wellcoming."
"The shavings is the most peaceful idyllic setting."
Everyone is so friendly and helpful. The cottage is very well equipped to self cater and relax. You can enjoy a drink and a book very easily on the patio or just watch the world go by. The location allows you to really explore the Peak District easily and with Buxton a mere 2 miles away it's easy to pick up supplies in the many shops and supermarkets. Will definitely be telling my friends about it and hoping to return soon.
"Tha accommodation had every thing we needed, comfy bed, good quality towels that were soft and fresh smelling."
Lovey quiet location.
"The journey we had to get there, was quite precarious to say the least!"
We ended up driving the back way apparently to Cowdale Hall Farm, in Cowdale, Buxton! where there were no signs at all at the bottom of this very steep hill that our car being small only just got us there. That was my only criticism, which I informed the farmer about! Also, I was completely unaware we were staying on a farm! The advert for this endearing lovely place does not advertise it as being on a farm! As quaint and lovely as it was. The people running the place were friendly and welcoming.
"Very nice accommodation, modern and clean."
It had everything you needed. In addition it was run by a very nice and friendly family, who we watched working so hard on their farm, and in the cottages. It was great to have an off road dog walk as an addition. We will be back.
"Welcoming friendly host."
Warm and comfortable accomodation
"We have stayed at The Shavings a few times before."
A quiet place, lovely scenery and where situated was very convenient for sight seeing. The bedroom area is a bit small, unfortunately. They have installed a lovely new shower room. And everywhere was spotlessly clean. All you could need for your stay.
"We had a lovely stay at The Shavings."
Welcomed very warmly and the cottage had everything we needed - the biscuits and bottle of milk were especially appreciated, as was the excellent wi-fi. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this property and I am smiling to myself, just remembering how happy and comfortable we felt there.
"Lovely place lovely cottage HOLIDAY CUT SHORT BY COVID."
"This was a lovely place to stay for my break in the Peak District with the dog."
Owners were friendly and helpful and the cottage had everything I needed, plus it was in a perfect location for good walks and towns/attractions. The cottage was comfortable and quiet, would highly recommend! Thank you!
"Lovely countryside & lovely walks also the owners were very friendly & helpful."
"Everything was great, plenty of room, quiet, clean, well equipped and comfortable accommodation."
Ideally placed for good walking. Only frustration was bad layout of the bathroom which lead to a cramped feeling and need for a very small sink behind the door.
"It was a really nice cottage in a quite area."
And such a peaceful place to Stay. The cottage had everything we needed for a relaxing comfortable stay.
"Wonderful stay in the most beautiful setting ."
The cottage was fab and very homely and we did not want for anything. Our hosts were so friendly and accommodating. We could not have asked for more. Thank you so much. Celia and Gabriella

"Its difficult to give an a valid assessment on this property because new owners had taken possession not a week before."
There are faults that they are aware of of which they will be correcting. It was a comfortable stay with lots of places to visit even this early in the season, would recommend the Shavings and the area

About the location
Tideswell 7 miles; Bakewell 12 miles; Matlock 21 miles.
It was the constant 28 degrees centigrade of the bubbling blue waters of Buxton's eight thermal springs that originally attracted the Romans to the town. However it was during the 18th and 19th centuries, under the patronage of successive Dukes of Devonshire, that the Palladian splendour of the Buxton of today was designed and built - including the magnificent semi-circular Crescent, The Great Stable, Hall Bank, The Square, The Pavilion Gardens and The Opera House. Today visitors continue to enjoy these magnificent buildings and gardens, as well as the Opera House's full programme and annual festivals of music and arts. There is good walking close by with rugged peaks to the north and gentle hills and dales to the south and a number of pretty towns and villages are dotted throughout including Bakewell, Ashford-in-the-Water, Castleton and Edale. The stunning properties of Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are within easy driving distance and must be seen while visiting this area. A great base for exploring the Peak District.
