  • "We loved the cottage."

Very comfortable and everything we needed. Will definitely recommend to others, thank you.

Thank you very much for your postive feedback. We're here now at our cottage and have found everything to be just perfect. A couple of small maintenance jobs which we have addressed during our stay which should ensure future guests enjoy their experience. Property Owner

  • "Location of the property was lovely."

Drive was tight but did manage to get a pickup truck up the drive to the opening at the top. The cottage seems very run down and needs some care. We woke a couple mornings to pools of water on the living room floor that appeared to come from around the fireplace stone. This was reported the maintenance man but he did seem concerned. Just made it sound like it was a normal problem. Also there was a huge damp patch on the main bedroom wall that sat wet the whole time we were there. The windows were running in water the whole time and moldy. We left early as all developed horrible coughs and put it down the condition of the cottage.

Utterly horrified to read your review. We were at the cottage in January and didn't have any problems what so ever. We can't understand why you would say the cottage is run down. We live abroad and will address the water ingress straight away. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Property Owner

My only complaint would be the lack of newspaper and kindling wood to start the fire ...we had to obtain our own..disappointing. A picture of the house from the main street would be more helpful than the one supplied on the website.

  • "Lovely cottage but could do with a few little bits."

Arriving at 10pm, the cottage was freezing (heating set to about 10 degrees but getting out of a warm car it feels colder and not welcoming), and there was a whole section in the folder on how to light the log burner with nothing to light it-a tiny bit of starter wood some coal and no firelighters. It would have been courteous to supply enough for just lighting it once at least as we had no idea where we'd be able to get those after our long journey.

I can't begin to tell you how sorry we are to read your comments when we usually receive such great reviews. The heating is operated by Nest and has an eco feature and if there's no movement in the house it clicks off. However a turn of the dial and its usually very warm within 30 minutes. Also shocked at such a low review on cleanliness we will contact you directly to ask for more details. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely stay at Croft cottage, despite the weather!"

As soon as we walked in we felt totally at home. This is such a cosy little cottage, full of charm but very well equipped with all kitchen utensils and a big smart tv, super comfortable beds and sofas, a modern kitchen, bathroom and shower and spotlessly clean. The time of year meant we couldn't enjoy the garden, but it is fully enclosed for dogs, although as mentioned on an earlier review, at one point the wall is only a couple of feet high so be aware if you have a larger dog. Equally true that you will not want to bring your car right up the driveway to the cottage unless it is a small one, but that is no hardship as it can be left at the main gate which just adds 20 yards to your journey! Overall one of the nicest dog friendly cottages we have stayed in, we would certainly come again.

Welcome gift of pint of milk, bottle of water, 2 cans of San Pellegrino & 3 small packets of biscuits was a nice gesture. Kitchen area was well stocked- with a extras like foil, cling film, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, dishcloth, etc Garden area was well kept, secure and dog friendly 2nd bedroom is a small double Bathroom was clean, tidy with double walk in shower- stocked with shower gel, shampoo & conditioner( the fan didn’t work, but open window helped with getting rid of steam) Note- pub in village has limited open times on certain nights, to be fair we didn’t use it. The location is beautiful, even with all the rain we had during our stay. Plenty of walks locally, and places to visit. There is a generous amount of utensils, pots and pans, and tableware. The downside of this is that unfortunately all the cupboard space was taken up. We got around the lack of storage for our food, by moving some things we weren't going to use to the dining room. The only real issue was that the bathroom fan wasn't working.

Grass was very long and I had to clean up dog Pooh that wasn’t my dogs. Not amused. On the positive side beds were very comfortable and all rooms were very clean. Also very central for Bakewell and Matlock

Hi Gaynor We’re so sorry about the garden. We have a gardener who should visit weekly. However on our recent visit we also noticed the length of the lawn and called him straight away. Garden was great for the dogs and us to relax in. Needed blackout curtains in main bedroom, other bedroom needed to be changed around as double bed right up to the wall and stars on the ceiling which illuminated at night, great for children, not so good for adults tho. We all enjoyed our stay, cottage was very well equipped. Lovely area. Definitely would like to go back again.

Hi Lorraine Thank you for taking the time to complete the feedback questionnaire. The curtains in the main bedroom are thick cotton and lined and it’s such a tiny window we haven’t ever had an issue with needing black out curtains. With regards to the second bedroom unfortunately there isn’t any alternative location for the bed due to the layout of the cottage. So for future guests do please be aware that the double bed is against the wall. With best wishes Jane & Chris Property Owner

  • "This was a good place to stay whilst we were having our new kitchen fitted."

The cottage was very clean with a comfortable bed and although the kitchen is compact it is a lovely cosy space. We had our meals in there and didn't bother with the dining room. We loved the bathroom which looks quite new and the shower is very effective. Bags of hot water and excellent water pressure always makes for an effective shower. Photographs of the living room are rather deceptive and seemed smaller than we were expecting. We didn't use the log burner, purely because the handle was jammed firmly in place and we couldn't secure the door. We had some heavy rain whilst staying here (not unusual in Derbyshire) and we noticed some damp patches on the wall and ceiling above the bed. Probably coming from the flashing around the chimney. Only other comment is really aimed at Sykes, who perhaps should have pointed out that you can only get a small car up the drive as the gate posts are so narrow. However, you can park your car at the bottom on the grass verge /Tarmac.

Lesley Thanks for taking the time to write your review and we are so sorry to hear about the fire and the damp wall. When we returned to the cottage we realised that there is a leak on the roof. We have now commissioned a local builder to repair it. The log burning stove door handle was just a quick spray of WD40 and it's working just fine. Glad though that you enjoyed your stay. This is possibly the best presented and equipped cottage I have rented and the photos are true to life. The shop in Winster really does stock everything you could need or want. The area and surrounding towns were generally dog friendly too in particularly The Square and Compass pub.

Hi Denise Many thanks for your feedback. We would love to leave cleaning materials and condiments but our management team are insistent that the law now is we can’t. Cottage is smaller than it looks on pictures, 4 people and 2 dogs would have been a squash. The garden is overlooked on both sides, no private space, and quite noisy out of school hours. The vacuum cleaner was broken , but Margaret and her team came in and cleaned for us until it could be sorted. Thank you. One thing the owners should be aware of is that we found water across the floor in the lounge on the Saturday evening, after investigating it had seeped through the wall behind the fireplace. The neighbours garden is higher and they had emptied water out of the pool, oops. Have let them know that this was an issue, but thought you should be aware. All things said we had a lovely holiday, would visit the peak district again, but not necessarily this property.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your review and we're so sorry about the issues. Thank you too for kindly informing us about the water ingress issue caused by our neighbour. The management team had reported the vacuum head had broken and although I had suggested we buy a new one they have told me it's been repaired now. Our cottage is small, we don't dispute that, but it's 400 years old and very quaint. We're sad to read that you wouldn't necessarily return. We've had so many repeat guests over the last two years, perhaps it wasn't the right choice for your requirements. Thank you once again though for taking the time to complete the feedback. It would be a bit of a squash for 6 adults, as there is only seating in the living room for 5…..and only one full bathroom. My only niggle is that the blurb said that fuel was included, so we didn’t pick up any logs. On arrival there were no logs or coal so we couldn’t have a fire the first night. We picked some up next day. I think it would be nice for either logs for the initial night were provided or that it made it clear that they weren’t. The driveway is very very narrow, and would not want to negotiate it in the dark.

Thank you for your comments and we hope you enjoyed your stay at Croft Cottage. Just for other guests who may read this, we do have a 'Nest' thermostat in the kitchen by the sink which is really simple, it can be turned clockwise to increase or anti-clockwise to decrease the temperature at any time during the day or night, otherwise if left on standby, the central heating is set at 20 degrees. The antique furniture fell apart when it was moved. All in all sadly disappointing and too small as a 6 guest cottage.

Dear Mrs Golder, we are so sorry our cottage didn't live up to your expectations. It is a very much loved holiday home to us as we live/work abroad during the Summer and we leave it in the hands of a local management company who provide gardening, cleaning and laundry changes. Clearly their standards have dropped and we will contact them immediately. With regards to your mention of our mattresses being very old and uncomfortable, I am shocked and extremely disappointed. All three double beds were new last September and both myself and my family have always found them to be really comfortable. They were very expensive and 2 were purchased from a well known high class department store, in fact previous guests have actually mentioned how comfortable they were. I am so sad to hear the our antique furniture has fallen apart, again I will contact the management company, they certainly haven't informed us of any damage which has occurred since we left the cottage in their hands in April. The cottage is small & quaint, we don't deny that, it has super low ceilings and small rooms but our family of 6 have always been comfortable there for short stays. Unfortunately there were some problems with the cottage in that it wasn’t as clean as expected and floors had to be swept on arrival but this is a dog friendly cottage so should maybe expect a few hairs. Other areas needed a quick wipe, the garden was quite over grown and there was a problem with a slight leak in the lounge area leading to a soggy rug however in fairness to the owner we were so busy with our lovely week away we did not give opportunity for them to rectify this as I’m sure they would have.

  • "Croft Cottage was lovely."

There was a welcome folder which told us the basics of what we needed to know about the property and the area which was helpful. The great things were - beautiful decor, somehow managed to be both modern and cosy country style - really comfy bed and pillows - loved the fire - kitchen really well stocked in terms of utensils - there was also milk in the fridge and ketchup, oil, salt and pepper in the cupboard - there was shampoo, conditioner and body lotion in the bathroom, plus a gorgeous blackberry hand lotion. Also hairdryer - spacious garden for the dog - quiet area but easy to drive to winster, matlock, bakwell etc - great customer service, easy to get someone to talk to and we asked to stay an extra day and they got back to us within an hour - easy to find, if coming from Winster, you go passed Back Lane on the left, then you will see the bus stop and the BT phone box which is now a defibrillator also on the left and its immediately after that on the left. The gate is a pale green and has a large oval "Crofy Cottage" sign on it The less good things: - both at the front and the back of the garden the walls and gate are low - about 2ft - so i couldnt leave the dog unattended in the garden - no dryer - so if your clothes get wet on a walk, you can wash them, but if its raining you cant dry them outside and no dryer means they stay wet! - the downstairs bedroom has a glass door and is connected to the lounge, so no privacy in there. - technically you can sleep 6 there, but i think that would be a squeeze generally, for eating/relaxing. - there was a dishwasher, but no tablets - the welcome pack asked us not to change the thermostat.. sometimes we were boiling hot! - i wish the property description had included all the little things that are there so i wouldnt have had to think about taking them, like the salt, pepper, shampoo, conditioner etc etc. But overall the property is gorgeous and we had an amazing time.

About the location

WINSTER

Bakewell 6 miles; Matlock 4.5 miles.

The conservation village of Winster is situated within the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park and is an extremely pretty place, with a charming 17th century market house at its centre, and other imposing 17th and 18th century houses, many three storeys high. The three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank are interconnected by alleyways known as ‘ginnels’, which are well worth exploring. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. Within the village there is a well-stocked, community-owned general store incorporating a Post Office. There are two pubs, both serving food and traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. The Tissington and High Peaks walking and cycling trails, with bike hire available, both lie less than 5 miles from the village, a wonderful base for exploring the Peak District.
