  • "Lovely property just what we needed for New Year my only suggestions would be an extra comfy chair in main lounge and an outside light for door entrance."

We had a great time thanks for having us

  • "Lion Cottage is comfortable and very well equipped."

The owner contacted us at the start of our stay just to make sure that everything was OK (it was!). There are numerous walks in the local area, many straight from the door so we could leave the car behind. My sons and I had a lovely relaxing few days here.

  • "We had a very comfortable few days at Lion Cottage."

We appreciated coming into the warm cottage late afternoon on a chilly day in early May, as well as the extras provided - including milk, biscuits and tea (which we’d forgotten). It was well equipped. We only used the double bedroom but the bed was very comfortable with a cosy duvet. Lion Cottage is in a very quiet hamlet/village, in the beautiful rolling countryside of the Peak District with easy street parking ; and whilst we didn’t use the two pubs, they would have been very useful had we stayed longer. We appreciated the leaflets of things to do in the area and can recommend the Cascades Japanese Garden and the National Tramways Museum both within easy distance. A delightful few days.

  • "The cottage was perfect for us, much bigger than we had thought it would be and very clean."

We had a great time. Excellent location for exploring the peaks and amazing walks straight from the cottage. Loved the Red Lion pub next door.

  • "When we arrived at the cottage it was bitter cold as there was no heating on, it was most unwelcoming!"

We contacted the owners to tell them and she apologized and said that it should have been on and went on to say that it was a new Hive system. She spoke to my partner and told him to see if he could adjust the Hive stat to get it to come on. We later discovered the boiler was programmed for the heating to go on from 6.30 to 8.30am and then from 4.30 to 22.00pm leaving us without heating most of the day. Due to the fact it was so cold and uncomfortable we cut our holiday short. On our return we contacted Sykes to complain and were told the fault lay with us as we had tampered with the system. We were offered £20 as a goodwill gesture which we flatly refused. We felt this was an insult!

  • "Probably one of the nicest holiday cottages we’ve stayed in over the years of holidaying in the Peak District."

It had everything we needed - and 2 bathrooms was a bonus! We hardly used the car as there were plenty of walks from the door. Being within walking distance of two good pubs providing tasty meals was also a boon. Parking was on the road but was never a problem.

We had two granddaughters who enjoyed the playground in the village. Excellent village shop in Winster saves trips to Bakewell or Matlock.

About the location

Bakewell 6 miles; Matlock 4.5 miles.

The conservation village of Winster is situated within the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park and is an extremely pretty place, with a charming 17th century market house at its centre, and other imposing 17th and 18th century houses, many three storeys high. The three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank are interconnected by alleyways known as ‘ginnels’, which are well worth exploring. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. Within the village there is a well-stocked, community-owned general store incorporating a Post Office. There are two pubs, both serving food and traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. The Tissington and High Peaks walking and cycling trails, with bike hire available, both lie less than 5 miles from the village, a wonderful base for exploring the Peak District.
