  • "A warm welcome by the owner ken."

Property was well equipped and added bonus of a garden summer house. It is well situated for walking and bus stop. The local pub 2 mins walk, served excellent food.

  • "So pleased we returned!"

We last stayed at Church Barn 8 years ago and we are so pleased we decided to return. Everything about Church Barn is how we remembered it with the bonus of a lovely summer house. We enjoyed a fabulous week. Being able to walk from the door was amazing. So such to see and do around the area. Thank you to Mr Pearson for such a warm welcome too.

  • "What a charming little holiday cottage, equipped with everything we needed for a self sufficient stay."

Owner Ken lives onsite but the barn is completely private and enclosed within its own garden, with a new summerhouse which was really warm even on a cold day. Ken is about the friendliest man we've met and is always able to give advice on walks, local sights etc. The welcoming pub is within a few hundred yards stumbling distance and the landlord even remembered our drinks order when we emerged from a long day of walking, two days after our first visit! The cottage is perfectly situated close to Dovedale which can be walked to directly from the front door. There is a generous stack of fuel for the logburner which is no extra charge. Cottage appears small in the photos but this is part of its charm, you need to be willing to compromise on space but it is perfect for a couple and the comfy chairs were huge and cosy. We were able to use the dining table as our cooking space and even baked fresh bread daily, had a roast dinner etc so had no problems. Photo on the description was slightly out of date as the TV is now a larger flatscreen with freeview/netflix etc. All in all a lovely relaxing week and a great base for local national trust, walks (and brewery tours), thanks for the stay Ken!

Great location for exploring the white peak area and with a variety of walk options from the door of the cottage. Lovely local pub only 200 metres away as well. Wouldn’t hesitate to book again if we decide to return to the area later in the year

  • "Absolutely beautiful cottage and surroundings."

Just home from a 4 day stay at Church Barn, totally relaxed. Our stay was toasty warm, definetely the warmest get away we have stayed in, control over the central heating in the barn, along with a log fire with endless supply of logs. Ken, the owner is wonderful, a very welcoming and informative host. Highly recommend this barn to couples who want to get away from it all. Thank you so much Ken and Sykes.

  • "Nice to have the privacy which the owner totally respected although living nearby."

We had a really nice holiday, and the cottage is beautifully situated. In an ideal world we would have welcomed a larger sink in the bathroom however that could be organised and perhaps a screen which would prevent water splashing out of the shower onto the floor instead of a curtain which could not be drawn round because of the ceiling slope. However, a very comfortable bed and cosy cottage.

The property & gardens are immaculate with a lovely summer house. Ken the owner lives next door if you need anything but leaves you to it after the hand over. Fantastic pub a minute and a half walk away with lovely food and a good choice of Ales.

  • "I appreciate this property is quite small, and available space has been mostly well used."

However, in the kitchen it was necessary to keep moving the toaster from a window sill to a power point in top of the electric hob, not a safe arrangement. Upstairs, the shower curtain over the bath was awkward to use to prevent water leaking into the floor. The garden was lovely, and summerhouse a good addition. Overall, the property was well presented, very clean, and the owners made us very welcome, and were helpful without being intrusive.

The small space is used efficiently, the facilities provided are adequate for short stays. The fireplace is the biggest feature we went with it. The cottage also comes with a private garden which would be lovely to spend a warm summer evening however we went during October and it was mostly wet and windy.

Some homely added extras were most welcome, simple things like a torch and an umbrella proved to be quite an asset on dark or wet evenings going from the local pub or just to the car. Information on the local area was interesting and informative.

Coach and Horses pub is literally a minute away on foot and does good food and good beer. There is everything you need in the cottage, including a desk fan which was extremely useful when I was there. The cottage and the garden are immaculately kept and are great place to relax. The Tissington trail is only a 15 minute walk away, making walking to Ashbourne a nice steady 3 mile stroll along a flat well maintained path. The owners of the cottage live next door, and are around if you need them but leave you alone to enjoy your holiday. When I arrived I as met by Ken who told me all I needed to know about the cottage. Overall a beautiful place to stay and relax, couldn’t ask for more. Got a feeling I’ll be going back soon!

Road noise quite high, with windows open in bedroom, having to close very early in morning . Plumbing requires better maintenance, kitchen sink blocked for to days of holiday & pipe work banging when hot and cold water taps are turned on in bathroom sink. About the location

FENNY BENTLEY

Ashbourne 2 miles; Alton Towers 13 miles.

The pretty village of Fenny Bentley lies 2 miles north of Ashbourne. Life in Fenny Bentley revolves, as it has done for years, around the pub and the church. The Church of St Edmund dates back to the 14th century. Some particular features of the church are its 16th century screens and the alabaster Beresford tomb. The heart of the village is surely the Coach & Horses, a welcoming coaching inn with real ales. Just 2 miles away, the traditional market town of Ashbourne, once a fashionable social centre in the 18th Century, boasts an eccentric street plan, quaint cobbled alleyways, old market stalls and welcoming coaching inns. Many fine Georgian buildings remain and host a good selection of restaurants and interesting antique shops. For those who prefer outdoor pursuits, the Dove and Manifold valleys are close by offering excellent walking and cycling opportunities, whilst the thrills and spills of Alton Towers are just a short drive away.
