  • "Such a beautiful cottage!"

Spacious, but also cosy and homely. We loved sitting in the conservatory and watching the birds on the feeders. And lighting a fire after a day out walking. Walks from the door, such as the strenuous dance with the dragon walk, and also many nearby walks such as the Roaches and Lud's church. Hope to visit again!

  • "Ivy Cottage was wonderful in every way."

It was one of the best equipped cottages we have stayed in and they had thought of everything you might need and more. The location was spectacular and the cottage itself was beautiful with many homely touches to make the stay comfortable and cosy. Maybe a few too many antiques for families with lively children (as we left mighty relieved nothing was broken!!) but that isn't a criticism as such because the quirky decor was part of the charm and the children were enchanted by the books, games and ornaments. A perfect stay.

  • "This is one of the most charming and comfortable cottages we have ever stayed in."

Despite its age, everything worked beautifully and it was extremely well-equipped. It had a really delightful atmosphere - very restful, very calming. We also loved the beautiful cottage garden, overflowing with flowers and shrubs and adding to the feeling of seclusion. The location was perfect for visiting the southern end of the Peak District. Thank you to the owners who somehow made us feel so welcome even though we never met them! They clearly love their cottage and want those who stay in it to feel the same.

Again thank you so much for your lovely response. It is very rewarding to have the cottage so appreciated and to feel that guests enjoy its personal atmosphere and all the glories of the countryside around it. Property Owner

There’s something about it which makes you instantly relax. It retains so many original features and is furnished with so many interesting and characterful items. The location at the heart of the Peak District in a really quiet village is also unbeatable and there are good views from the excellent conservatory .

  • "We really enjoyed our holiday at Ivy cottage."

Set in an ideal location in a quiet village, made it easy for us to access all areas of the Peak District, with Buxton only a 10 minute drive away, and plenty of walks on the doorstep. The property was well-equipped and full of unique items of furniture which added a personal touch. There was enough space for 5 adults to relax comfortably throughout the week. Only 2 minor points to highlight: as mentioned by other visitors, the garden is somewhat overgrown and it was difficult to navigate at times, especially to the various seating areas. When it had rained in the night, getting to and from the gate without getting wet from the plants was a challenge. However we do appreciate that trying to maintain the garden during high season must be a challenge. The second point to note was the downstairs shower which we were unable to use as, as a family, we are generally above average in height. Again, we appreciate that it is an old cottage, with low ceilings, but found that, unless you sat in the bath, the shower is better suited to children than adults. These points aside, we had a very enjoyable, relaxing holdiay and would recommend it to friends and family.

  • "The property was very well equipped and easy to get to."

It was cool when the outside weather was hot. We always managed to park within a few yards - lots of walkers park on the same road. Two negatives: the downstairs rooms are darker than shown on the site (a minor point) the garden is very overgrown (so not as shown on the site), which meant we could not sit outdoors

Thanks for your positive feedback. Sorry you found some of the rooms darker than represented in publicity photos but that is one of the reasons the cottage is so cool in the hot weather! It is a very old cottage after all and the original photos were taken in the winter with flash. On the other hand there is the large conservatory looking out across the garden that most guests make the most of whatever the season. The week after your stay we were here ourselves and spent time tidying up the garden (as I do regularly anyway) so that it was more easy to get around. I missed my last opportunity to do so in the extremely hot weather of July so I am sorry for you that it was more 'lush' that usual - especially in a time of rapid growth. It is more of a traditional cottage garden and there are 4 seating areas around the garden which I always make sure are clear and accessible for people, whatever their mobility. Again the photos were taken in low season so an element of seasonal adjustment is necessary. We feel the nature of the garden is part of the charm of the place but realise the need for our guests to be able to access it. Sorry again that you found this more tricky that you had hoped. • "It was a pleasure to stay at Ivy cottage for a lovely (if rainy) week."

The cottage is thoughtfully appointed with lovely personal touches throughout - the owners have carefully left many notes with helpful instructions to guide the guests. Three points of note; a) I might recommend that prospective guests be alerted as to the very 'full' nature of the gardens, which do impede access to the front of the cottage with large suitcases. From the roadway to the conservatory entrance, the foliage does over grow the walkway, which made navigation of our luggage a challenge. Since we are from abroad, and travelling for a month, we did have many larger suitcases - perhaps Sykes might consider some form of check-box on their application form to alert the owners to the fact that renters are coming with luggage as such - ? b) We were a little disappointed to have renovation workers begin construction work on an adjoining cottage at 0615 on our final Saturday morning, using the adjoining walkway to gain access around back of the property. The early morning hammering and cartage was a little alarming so early in the day. A gentle chat with the neighbours might avoid this for the next guests. c) a note on the booking form for Ivy Cottage noting that the Pub is 'closed' for the foreseeable future would have been helpful. One filter I rely upon when booking a cottage from Canada, is the close-location of a Pub. Since the 'Quiet Woman' is not open, that might have been good to know. The Royal Oak is nearby, but not really within walking distance. The Pub in Crowdecote was also closed when we walked over High Wheeldon....a similar disappointment. Otherwise, it was a happy and restful week at a lovely cottage in a wonderful region of the UK.

Thank you for the positive feedback you have given us on Ivy Cottage. Just to respond to the points you have made: 1. Yes the garden is very 'lush' at this time of year but we do cut back as much as we can to make sure guests have easy access to the front of the house. It is an old cottage with a cottage garden and a 'cottage' path to the front door. It is clear from the details that our guests rely on street parking outside the cottage. It was lovely to have guests from abroad (our first) but the luggage you had to bring in was obviously a challenge in the circumstances. However the path is level and has no steps and we are afraid we cannot offer the easy of access of, say, a hotel. 2. We are very sorry for the noise from our near neighbour's cottage albeit on your last morning. He is a lovely chap and we will have a word with him. It may have been some builders who came round on his behalf. He often asks if the work he is doing disturbs us/guests and we have had no mention of this so far. His renovations are nearly over! Will sort asap. 3. As with a lot of pubs post covid - The Quiet Woman closed 2 years ago, sadly because of the death of the owner. We will amend this detail on the site. However the pub which was full of character, was a real local and didn't offer food much beyond pork pies and pickled onions (no sandwiches let alone meals) and I'm sure even when open didn't have a web site. The nearest pubs for food are the ones you mention. We do give a lot of detail in our information folder on good places to eat nearby for guests on arrival and it is always advisable to check by phone/websites for opening times. Property Owner

The cottage had absolutely everything we could have needed and was so beautifully presented. It was full of character and really ensured you felt you were in a home from home. The garden too was a delight to sit in and look at. We loved our visit. The cottage was perfectly situated to visit much of the surrounding countryside and we had fantastic days out at Chatsworth House, the Crich Tramway Village and to Bakewell. After our busy days, what better could we have done than returned to the peace and tranquility of Ivy Cottage! Thank you!

Thanks for your lovely feedback. It's really important to us to feel the cottage is contributing to guests enjoyment of their holidays. It's a longstanding family house with many happy memories so very happy to share it with those looking for something special. Property Owner

  • "This is a quite fantastic cottage - a really lovely place to stay."

A really quiet village with all of the Peak District nearby - but close enough to Buxton for shopping (and even, we discovered, pizza delivery). The owners have done absolutely everything possible to make it a home from home. The kitchen is very modern, perfectly equipped ... good beds ... log stoves ... perfectly clean (or as clean as a cottage like this is getting) ... extra everything you could need. There’s a thoughtfulness about their preparations and communications that made the whole stay pretty much flawless including the milk and a cake on arrival. Even the random artworks around the place, are lovely, the DVDs, games and jigsaws exactly what you’d want to find in your own home. 3ft thick walls make the WiFi a bit flakey in places ... but you know what ? ... that’s kind of an advantage. If you’re looking for a quiet, easy stay this is just perfect. Much more like staying in a friend’s holiday home than a rental cottage. Owners are absent and invisible (always good IMO) but helped us out when we left some things behind. Possibly the best cottage I’ve ever rented. Thanks

  • "The owners of this cottage have done everything they could to ensure an enjoyable stay from the furnishings to the good art to the pretty garden."

I particularly appreciated the little bottles of oil and spices. There was also sufficient cutlery, dishes etc not to be forever washing up. They were not mean in what they provided and this was a very refreshing change from other cottages we have used. There are things you do not really want to lug with you in order to be able to cook a tasty meal or wash your clothes. The garden was delightful. The only downside were they myriads of flies which insisted on committing hara kiri in the conservatory. I think some blinds would help. It is in the middle of the most glorious countryside. The best small cottage we have stayed in yet and we have stayed in a few!

Thank you for your feedback which is must appreciated. We have now supplied a simple fly screen onto the conservatory door. This has now solved the problem. Thank you. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was fabulous!"

Although it retained a very old traditional feel it had been modernised enough to give it a bright, fresh look as well. It was a real home from home which gave it a very welcoming feel and was better equipped than most peoples' kitchens! It had everything even a lot of basics for cooking which was extremely helpful. We loved the conservatory and ate most of our meals there looking out over the garden and watching the birds feeding. It was a great location; quiet and peaceful, you could walk from the door and get anywhere in the Peak District within half an hour. We thoroughly enjoyed our week and were incredibly lucky with the weather. It was delightful! Thank you!

With charming features throughout we were delighted. It felt very much like a home rather than holiday accommodation. It is equipped with everything one could possibly need and more! The owner has retained much of the original furnishings and art and craft work, all of which were, we felt, so "in keeping" with the cottage and country life. We loved the location.
