"We absolutely loved our stay at Brambleside."
Everything was great - lots of space, lovely clean rooms, beautiful kitchen and cooking facilities. Great location in the Peak District, so managed a beautiful walk finished with lunch at the pub that is less than five minutes walk down the road. Only downside was the car parking, but not a major problem - we shouldn’t have all arrived in separate cars!

"Lovely place to stay and a lovely area to be in."
-
"Beautifully presented property, all amenities and everything you need in the house."
Clean, warm, comfortable, fantastic views from panoramic patio doors. Outstanding Airbnb.

"The house was amazing."
It was very clean and comfortable with enough room for everyone to get together. We particularly liked the new extension as we were able to open the bi-fold doors and take in the amazing views and fresh air. There were good walks for all ages from the house and the pub down the road was lovely. Would highly recommend.

"This house is beautiful and perfect for 2 or even 3 families."
The owners are quick to respond and deal with any issues.

"Brambleside is a great holiday home in a really good location for exploring the Peak District with amazing views over the countryside."
Unfortunately it is really let down by the cleanliness of the house and the facilities available specifically in the kitchen. We found wet and mouldy towels left in a wicker basket in a bathroom, 6 used disposable BBQ's left in the garden, rusty and dirty kitchen utensils and a drawer in the kitchen full of chopping boards that smelt really quite bad. We had to purchase chopping boards and a pan large enough to cook for a big family group as none were provided that were fit for use. This was our first booking with Sykes and therefore our only example of how they operate. If this is the level of quality that is considered acceptable then we will not be booking out family holidays with them again on that basis.
I am extremely sorry that Mr Brown and his guests found the cleanliness and facilities as they were, and which fell well below the standards that Brambleside normally provides. I reside abroad and I employ a cleaning firm who usually provide an excellent service and I have taken up the issues raised by Mr Brown with them. They are not employed to clean outside the premises and the BBQs should have been cleaned up by the previous occupants, as indeed should the items in the kitchen. The dirty utensils should have been spotted and corrected by my cleaners. As for the supply of cooking utensils. When customers in the past have raised deficiencies I have bought additional utensils. I will look at what is there to see if items have gone missing. Property Owner

"Lovely cottage with great location for exploring the Peak District (and right near a great pub!"
). Garden an views great (but garden walls not secure for a young dog). We’ll go again.

"We had a mini celebration in place of what should’ve been our wedding (which was cancelled due to Covid)."
The house was superb and the pictures on the site really don’t do it justice. Kitchen really well stocked and the views are stunning. Everything we needed to celebrate and relax! Thank you.

"Beautiful, spacious house; stunning views; good walking from the door."
We have stayed in many holiday cottages but this one is a little bit special. Lots of lovely little details, like the sliding doors, ice and water dispensers, giant dog bed... Great walks to Eyam, the edges and Padley Gorge; and good pubs within easy reach. We loved it, and will definitely be back!

"Lovely location the walks are fantastic ."
The house was as described and of a very high standard

"Weeks of rubbish under the sofas, the bedroom with bunk-beds was covered in weeks of dust."
Cobwebs everywhere downstairs, dust on all high places tops of cupboards, lamp shades etc. Maggots in the dustbin. This would not be acceptable in pre Covid times. We expected it to be thoroughly sanitised by law during the epidemic. According to the email we received all games books etc were to be removed, this was not done. I await your reply
Many thanks for voicing your grievances regarding this property, unfortunately, due to the size of Sykes’s portfolio of properties, we can't visit every property on a weekly basis. That said, we are now investigating the matters raised with the owner who is bringing in an extra housekeeper to address the points you have raised. It is advised that books and games may be removed which is why suggest it would be a good idea to bring your own. If you wish to discuss or elaborate more on the issues raised, please feel free to contact the Sykes office quoting your booking reference number and any other information that may assist us in providing the best possible outcome and customer service. "They could supply at least Extra large saucepan for cooking for 9 people I."
E. for potatoes, pasta etc. and frying pans need replacing with decent ones that don’t stick. No cooking tongs! Apart from the above, the house, garden, location were all exceptional. We would definitely come back. Our 9 year old Old English Sheepdog found all the steps too much. So would advise against taking an elderly or less active dog.

"The house we stayed in was beautiful, the photos were lovely but didn't capture the stunning location."
, the size of the property and all the facilities.

"Beautiful house, tastefully decorated"
-
"Brambleside was a lovely place to celebrate my husband's recent retirement with our immediate family (there were ten of us)."
The views are really spectacular and the accommodation contemporary and very comfortable. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

"Great region and lovely house."
Although we had an issue with showers, the owner was easily accessible by phone and managed to get someone to fix things promptly. The house is spacious and confortable, with great views on the hills. The outdoor space is also well tended and nice on a summer day. Would recommend the property for a stay in lovely Derbyshire.

"As we had small dogs the garden was not secure enough."
If the patio area had been enclosed it would have been much better.

"The house was lovely with amazing views."
We appreciated the welcome things that were provided. In the kitchen a garlic press and proper oven gloves would have been helpful. Also the WIFI connection was very hit and miss. Not major issues. We were however very disappointed to find we had no hot water on the Saturday evening. We then discovered that the owner knew about this on the Friday, as the previous occupants had told him, but hadn’t bothered to do anything about it. When we rang him on Sunday morning, initially we were told the plumber would come out sometime that week. It wasn’t until we said this was completely unacceptable that he organised the plumber for later that morning. The plumber did come out and fix the problem. We were disappointed that no compensation was offered for us being without hot water for 24 hours. We would have expected better from an owner registered with Sykes. We were very happy with the response from yourselves when we rang you and with the way you followed up our complaint and communicated with us.

"We were ten friends on a walking weekend away."
The cottage was in a great location near the main sights and just below beautiful Froggatt crag and a nice local pub. The cottage was generally very clean but could have done with a more thorough hoover! Great social spaces and well equipped kitchen. Very comfy beds. Very little noise from road. Getting into the drive wasn't a problem for a competent driver. Thank you for a great stay.

"Ideal venue for a large group."
We were able to entertain 14 for a family reunion lunch. All the rooms face west so we soaked up the sunshine and the magnificent views

"The house was beautifully positioned and the views were fantastic from the back of the property."
There were great walks straight from the house. It was so easy to travel around this area of the peak District as everything is close to get too. The house was very well equipped for our party of 11. Although there were a couple of things that we were a bit disappointed with. The showers upstairs were only Luke warm and the pressure in all the showers was not good at all. Also some parts of the kitchen and the cooking equipment weren't clean. We had to clean and wash something before we could use them. The sofa's in the living room were so uncomfortable so only a few of us used this room but the sunroom was lovely and we used this room the most the views were fantastic. We will definitely be back to visit the peak District it was beautiful.

"Wonderful property, spacious and warm for the whole week."
Needs minor tweaks to make it top notch - mirrors in bedrooms and more saucepans but still one of the best I've stayed in in 20 years of renting holiday cottages. The drive is tricky as it requires queuing cars in a line. We managed 5 on it. Its not actually in a village location, its an upmarket rural suburb on the steep hill below Froggatt Edge. Calver is a couple of miles easy walk along the river. There is a very good foodie pub about 100m away but both it and the house are on a busy unlit road on a bend so take care and torches!

"More adult board games as lots of children’s but not much else ..."
More adult board games as lots of children’s but not much else Bath mat need in shower room More casserole type dishes, not enough for 8 people to self cater Otherwise well equipped and very comfortable

"Had an amazing stay at Brambleside cottage, the house was large and spacious for our 9 person party, exceeding our expectations."
The well equipped cottage had everything to meet our needs including towels, board games, smart TV, large garden, and much much more. The owners had provided a handbook that proved most valuabl when looking for amenities and activities in the local area, nothing we wanted to do was more than a 25 minute drive. The house is located a 10 minute drive to Chatsworth house where we were fortunate enough to spend multiple days here swimming the river during the warm weather. Overall we all thoroughly enjoyed the trip and would highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a break in the Peak District, and would be more than willing to return.e

"We had a fabulous week."
Planning application in on property so it will be even better after the improvements.

"We had a wonderful week as a family at Brambleside."
The house is lovely and spacious with modern facilities and was very clean and well presented. It's in a lovely spot and even the tricky drive was manageable and didn't affect our enjoyable stay. The owners have gone the extra mile providing games for grown ups and kids alike and the beautiful views were a joy to wake up to.

"The location for walking was perfect."
Great pub for food almost next door.

"We arrived late afternoon on Friday April 27th after a 6."
5 hrs journey to find the house had not been cleaned, beds not made, no fresh towels etc.. Managed to contact the owner,Phil, who did respond quickly and managed to arrange for a cleaning team to come over. He was still saying they weren't expecting us despite me having spoken to him on the previous Tuesday to confirm bed configuration as per instruction. I also rang the Sykes helpline to tell them what had happened...all I got was a courteous "we will look into it" ...no further contact from Sykes until your email (this one) asking us to comment on the holiday!! My daughter and family had arrived before us thinking they had arrived too early so postponed their unpacking and "wasted" some time in Bakewell awaiting our arrival. Had my son arrived earlier with his very young children they would have been ready for bed and unable to go. When the cleaning team arrived they were very professional and tried to explain the confusion ...which of course was irrelevant as far as we were concerned... the much anticipated family holiday had gotten off on the wrong foot and was spoiled. We vacated the house for 1.5 hours to the pub (The Chequers) whilst the team of 3 did their magic...which is what they did Neither Sykes nor the owner contacted us afterwards to ensure everything was ok...offering to buy us an evening meal at the The Chequers would have helped cool our annoyance at the time It was gone 8 ,00pm before we were settled in and able to feed the children effectively lost half the first day! The above aside, once we were settled in the house was great with some very attractive features amongst the furnishings. We enjoyed the birch trees theme running throughout the rooms, the dining table being a special favourite with all of us and the visitors who called by to see us. The difficulties involved in getting cars in and out spoiled the stay for all the drivers. i am sure we failed to make some planned trips because of the effort involved and potential dangers shuffling cars around and getting out into the fast moving traffic (despite the 30 mph limit few cars kept within the limit). In the end we were lucky with the weather and caught a glimpse of summer. Apart from the disastrous start we had very good few days and did appreciate the comfort of Brambleside

"House was warm and comfortable with amazing views."
Perfect for a family get together.

"Booked Brambleside for a family getaway over New Year."
This is an amazing property with fantastic views of the Hope Valley. The bedrooms are stunning and extremely comfortable. The lounge areas are relaxing and take in the wonderful views. The house has everything you need plus lots more besides. It was decorated for Christmas which looked really lovely. Brambleside is located in an area of the Peak District which has loads to offer for days out, walks, breath-taking views and eating out. This property would be perfect for a family get together and has the added bonus of being dog friendly. We would definitely book this property again.

"The cottage itself was excellent, surpassed all expectations and was perfect for what we were looking for."
It was really well maintained and decorated to a high standard throughout and a great space for a large booking. Everything about using Sykes was easy and straight forward. The booking process was efficient and I received all information that was needed ahead of our stay in good time. All in all I was really impressed with the cottage and with the experience of looking, booking and paying for the accommodation. Thanks very much!

"We had a power cut as we were getting up and getting ready to go out etc."
It became evident that this was isolated to the property we were staying in so made attempts to contact the owner (using the information given to us). There was no reply on either number given so we contacted Sykes, who told us that they would attempt to contact the owner as well and then call us back. One and a half hours later we had to call them again as we had received no update - again we were told that another attempt would be made and this time assured that they would call back immediately either way. Half an hour later still no call back so we called again. We were told that they had to give the owner a chance to do something before they could, so we would have to wait another half an hour. This time they did call and the only thing they did was to tell us that our options were to go home and get a pro rata refund (no compensation to even cover travel expenses etc) or choose another property to move to (this included a 10% refund but meant we would have to foot any difference in price). Neither option seemed acceptable to us, we were told they could do nothing to resolve the situation regarding the power cut. In the end we called the grid ourselves, explained the whole situation and they came out (obviously this is not a charged for service - Why Sykes couldn't do this baffles us). Eventually contact was made with the owner 4 hours after the initial attempt, and after we had called the grid ourselves. By this point it was mid afternoon and the sun had almost gone down so no chance of going for a walk or really doing anything else with the day. We of course complained (when you pay £100+ per day losing one because the owner isn't contactable isn't really acceptable) and were assured by Sykes they would get back to us. That was 5 days ago and nothing at all from them. What a joke.

About the location
CALVER
Baslow 1.5 miles; Eyam 2 miles; Bakewell 5 miles.
The delightful, traditional village of Calver lies in the shadow of Froggatt Edge and Curbar Gap, in the heart of the Peak District National Park. A wonderfully traditional village with a Post Office and a country pub serving good food, Calver is close to the National Trust-owned Longshaw Estate, and less than five miles from Chatsworth House - home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. As well as a traditional pub and Post Office, the pretty village of Calver has a cafe, petrol station, small supermarket selling local produce, a craft shop and a gallery, and is a wonderful base for walks, climbing and mountain biking. The village of Baslow with shops, pubs and restaurants is only a mile and a half away, and a further range of amenities can be found in the market town of Bakewell, the capital of the Peak District and home to the famous Bakewell pudding. Haddon Hall is close by, as is the historic village of Eyam with its selection of pubs, cafes and a craft centre, meaning a day out in the parish of Curbar can be enjoyed by all.
